Fifth-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter

This unique coupler lets you tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your gooseneck hitch. It is air ride equipped to ensure that less stress is put on your trailer's frame than is typical with traditional king pin adapters. Simply replace your trailer's existing pin box with the Goose Box and you'll be ready to go.

Eliminate Chucking and Jarring

The Goose Box is designed to absorb road shock for a smooth, stable ride. The internal air bag can be adjusted to give you just the right amount of support, so you will lose the bounce but avoid the stiff, rigid ride that occurs when towing with an overinflated air bag. Also included in the Goose Box are dual shock absorbers, which extend the life of the air bag by ensuring that compression occurs in a controlled fashion.

Cutaway Diagram of Reese Products Goose Box
  1. The air bag can be adjusted to provide a smooth ride for both your truck and trailer. Because it is fully enclosed, it's protected from UV exposure and shielded from road hazards.
  2. Dual shock absorbers help to reduce bounce and relieve stress on your trailer frame.
  3. The integrated pivot tube allows the Goose Box to move fore and aft, minimizing chucking.
  4. The gooseneck coupler attaches to the 2-5/16 inch ball on your gooseneck trailer hitch.

Not As Advertised and Horrible Customer Service at Reese!
The pinbox came without installation hardware or directions. The hardware took a month to replace and again came without directions.
The pinbox DOES NOT have the air valve as pictured. When I called Reese I was told it was due to a parts shortage and the person I spoke to told (Paul) me the new set-up was a dumb design.
I TOTALLY AGEE!!
To inflate one person has to literally crawl under the pinbox while hitched to inflate while another watches the bar. Not easy for a 60+ year old fat man!
The valve faces OPPOSITE the bar side. Just dumb.
When etrailer followed up they were basically told I have to live with it.
NO - NOT HAPPY!

Comments
I did contact Reese and the original valve location has changed. The latest 20k 94920 has the air valve mounted on the top of the of the unit. We are working towards updating the pictures on our site.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

Very heavy duty, probably should have got the 16k. Installed on 43’ 2022 Salem Hemisphere 356QB at the dealership. Never moved the trailer with 5th wheel hitch so not sure how that would have compared. The guys at the RV dealership were really impressed with this hitch and now recommend this to anyone wanting to switch to goose neck hitch. Air ride is AMAZING! absorbs every bump without transferring to toe vehicle. You can see the trailer and hitch moving but don’t feel it. Extremely happy I purchased this rather than the 5th wheel setup for factory towing prep. I think this is well worth the couple hundred extra and not have to deal with that in the bed.

Goosebox works great! We have a bradford built flatbed with a recessed ball. The truck is used for work when not pulling the fifthwheel so I didn't want to cut out the trap door cover to use an anderson. The goosebox makes the fifthwheel no different then hooking up a regular gooseneck trailer but gives a much smoother ride

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

This Goosebox is heavy but I was able to get it installed by myself with help from my wife while tightening the bolt. When UPS freight delivered this, the driver was kind enough to load it directly into my truck so I did not have to lift it up. Using my truck I was able to back it into position where it went in effortlessly. I first took the zirk fitting out so I did not break it. The Goosebox was shored up using 2X4 pieces and then strapped in place, so it was in position while backing it up to the fifth wheel. This is a well made and stout pinbox replacement. The one issue I do have is that the air inflation gauge is very hard to see. Basically it is a black bar inside a black hole. The next time I am hooked up, I intend to put some white or other bright colored paint on the bar for easier viewing. No more lifting the heavy hitch to of the bed to use the truck. As always etrailer is hard to beat, fast shipping, expert advice, great prices.

Comments
After a year now, I can say this was a great move for me. It functions flawlessly with no chucking or clanking of any kind. Just be sure not to over inflate.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

Overall a great upgrade, but not perfect.
Happy to have gone this way from the previous 5th wheel hitch setup.

Pros:
* Having nothing in the bed of the truck, except when towing.
* There is more room for a larger bed chest without the 5th wheel hitch (replaced a B&W Companion slider).
* Air bag system seems less jarring on the frame of the 5th wheel than the B& W Companion / Lippert Rotaflex.
* Seems to have reduced further what little "chucking" there was with the Companion/Rota-Flex setup.

Cons:
* Lining up to hitch is a PITA. Reese should really rethink this.
* Towing is not as confidence inspiring. The trailer feels like it wallows in rough undulating turns in comparison to the 5th wheel connection.
* Sits much lower than the 5th wheel pin box, so at level RV sites the bottom of the hitch is lower than the truck bed. That affects the length of RV site needed as the truck can't back under the trailer to park.
* The pinbox structure requires more room in the bed, limiting what can be placed on the sides & rear of the bed.

To help with hitching, I'm going to make a magnetic "sighting" system that can be seen through the rear window. something that can be tossed in the bed chest when not in use. Currently I'm using the bed camera (in the CHMSL) along with a camera that I set on the wheel well, and that is marginal at best. It still takes multiple attempts because of the limited tolerance. Once the bed chest is installed the camera will be pretty ineffective.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

Installation was easy, and straight forward.
I love not having a 5th wheel in the bed of the truck.
I don't care for the airbag, and wish they would come up with some sort of short travel coilover shock system or something similar. Simpler is better in my opinion.
On my 2014 Ram crew cab SRW 3500 with 6.5ft bed, the turning radius is pretty dang good, and I've experienced no issues over uneven terrain or unevenly elevated intersections, of which I have some right around my house.
The ride is very smooth and comfortable, and only gets lumpy when the airbag is fully inflated. I normally tend to run about 38-40psi in it. That gives me about 6 inches of bed rail clearance, and still allows plenty of rail to goosebox clearance in tight turns.

My truck trailer combo is;
2014 Ram Cummins 3500 SRW with 6.5ft bed, and a 2016 KZ Durango 1500, with a 1600lb dry pin weight, and a 10,200Lb GVWR.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

My camper is 4 yrs old. I was using a gooseneck offset adapter to hitch fifth wheel to truck B&W gooseneck hitch. I upgraded to the Reese 16k Goosebox with a recommendation from a friend. I am absolutely impressed by how this hitch tows. No more chucking, the airbag and shocks add a much needed level of comfort. My camper is a Starcrart AR-One Maxx 26BHS. I’m towing with a 2005 Ram 3500 4x4 CCSB. I am using the B&W offset hitch ball to create more space between the truck cab and camper bulkhead. Highly recommend this hitch to anyone looking to tow their 5’er with a gooseneck ball hitch.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

I have completed the installation of the Reese Gooseneck pin Box 20K on my 2019 Columbus 1492 366RL. The installation went well for 2 people. The installation was done as suggested in the instructions, one step below the original fifth wheel hitch.
That actually proved to be too high for my 2019 GMC DenaliHD 4x4 DRW so I moved the hitch to the same position as the original equipment and the height works much better. I was able to unbolt and reset the position of the hitch by myself using the truck bed as a "work bench" and raising and lowering the RV to align the holes. Haven't towed it yet but will soon and provide more info. As you can tell by the photos, the safety chain installation was very easy.

Comments
The Reese Gooseneck is awesome. Smoother pull and less bouncing. I recommend anyone with a fifth wheel to convert to a reese gooseneck.

Great quality and easy to use. This hitch makes the camper ride so smooth on the truck. It eliminated the forward/backward chucking that happened every time we hit a bump in the road. Mutch more pleasant to drive. It is also very nice not to have a large hitch to remove from the truck. I use my truck between camping trips and the bed is open and free without lugging a 5th wheel in and out. Other people in the campgrounds constantly ask me about the "strange looking" hitch on my camper.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

1. It has developed a noisy sqeeking sound that I have not been able to find. I have used the grease fitting, but didn't seem to help.
2. The air level indicator could be a bright color for a better visual.
3. The pull cable was a little short, had to extend it.
4. The ride is a little more bouncier than a 5th wheel hitch.
Overall- not having the bulky 5th wheel hitch in the bed of the truck is nice

Hard to come up with enough words to praise this GooseBox!
What an incredible difference switching out from my king pin. Much better ride, have lots more room in my truck bed, and the adjustability of the airbag helps greatly in tight back-up situations.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

I had changed from a 2500 to a 3500 DRW that happened to include the GM puck system.

I was left with a choice: do I spend hundreds on a puck adapter system to allow my old industry standard rail fifth wheel hitch to work with my new truck? Or do I sell it for as much as I can, and change over to something like the Goosebox?

In the end, I was able to sell my old fifth wheel hitch and purchase this Goosebox, and the difference cost about as much as the adapter would have cost. Furthermore, the bed of my truck is now eternally empty and usable without needing to climb in and disassemble a heavy hitch, and I even lost a bit of weight in the bed.

Yes, the Goosebox is heavy, but it is certainly not heavIER than a normal pinbox plus the weight of my old hitch. If my guess is right, I probably lost 50-100 lbs.

To add to that, once the bag is inflated, the ride is so smooth. It's easily one of the best upgrades I did to my truck and trailer setup.

Yes, hooking up is SLIGHTLY more complex than a traditional fifth wheel, but the time difference is minutes at most. Less, once you get used to it, or you have a good spotter to help.

I kept the old pin box around, because I will want to keep this setup if I ever change trailers!

The Reese Goose box is a great addition to our fifth wheel. It torsion flexibility and its air bag give great control over the ride. We replaced the standard Lippert fifth wheel hitch with this and the ride difference over the rigid Lippert hitch is amazing. It was easy to install and is very easy to connect and disconnect to the tow vehicle. We're very glad we made this decision and recommend it strongly.

I installed the reese 20k goosebox yesterday by myself except for a small amount of help from my wife. Install was easy. Haven't had time to try it out yet.

I love the reese goosebox. It may be a little harder to hook up with, but there are ways to help with that 1 is utube. It makes for a much nicer and smother ride compared to the 5th wheel hitch.

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

I think the Goose Box is a great product. However, I searched on the eTrailer site and found that someone with the same make/model of RV and was guided to a particular Goose Box. I contacted etrailer, provided them with the year, make and model of RV - and asked to confirm if this was the same pinbox and if this particular model of Goose Box was correct and would fit my RV. trailer confirmed, so I placed the order. Unfortunately, in my model year, the pinbox changed and the Goose Box did not fit. etrailer did offer to return the product if I paid approximately $XXX in shipping. Coupled with etrailer sending me the wrong chains - I will look elsewhere for all my future RV needs.

Comments
Pin boxes can be different on an RV even if they made by the same manufacturer. The easiest way to determine which pin box you have is by looking on the pin box. There should be a sticker that gives the pin box manufacturers name and the model number. If you cannot find the sticker or it is not legible, another way to find the pin box information is to contact the trailer manufacturer directly. They can determine which OEM pin box was installed on your trailer using the trailers serial number. The final way to determine which pin box you have is by taking a few measurements. I have attached an FAQ article on measuring your pin box as well as a photo showing the measurements you will want to take. Based on the various measurements, we can determine which pin box you have and which replacement air ride pin box will work for you.

IF you have a gooseneck ball and a fifth wheel RV, then this is the perfect match for your rig! The Reese Goosebox changes everything! Easier hook up and unhooking. Smooth ride and easy installation. etrailer has plenty of videos for review and installation, plus you can call them and ask about it if you have any questions. I have had it for a year now and just installed it on its second camper and I would have it any other way! It is exactly what you need!

Review from a similar Goose Box in Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters

This really was a game changer from my conventional hitch set up. No more lifting a heavy hitch receiver out of my truck bed when not in use, and the hitching process is a breeze. No binding or hitch slide issues. The ride was much smoother with the air system. I installed it myself with the help of one other person and didn't have any problems. Have about 6k miles on it now and it's awesome. Worth the money.

This thing is great! Install was a breeze took about 2 hours to install taking my time and torque. All I did was sat the pin box up on cardboard and wooden blocks, then slid the pin box under the king pin when it was close enough. A buddy and I installed it.

Towing is very smooth and nice and easy. No bucking.

Everything is great with this gooseneck pin box. I'm extremely happy and I'm even at the camp site right now reviewing this! Thanks etrailer.

  • King Pin Adapter to Allow Goose Neck Hitch to Pull 5th Wheel Trailer
There are four basic types of adapters that can allow a goose neck hitch to pull a 5th wheel trailer. The best option for you will depend on how often you will tow the trailer in this manner. Some of these devices will place additional stress on the trailer frame and hitch but may be okay for one-time, occasional or short-distance travel. You will want to consult the manufacturer of your trailer on this point. Others offer a safer permanent solution for frequent use, such as the type that...

We have Goosebox replacement pin boxes for many OEM pin boxes. For example, for pin boxes 1621, 1621HD, and 0719 use part # RP85FR rated for 20K The linked article will assist.

  • Does the Goose Box Cause Increased Risk for Bedrail to Fifth Wheel Overhang Clearance?
A Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter like # RP85FR will give you about the same clearances as a 5th wheel hitch with a standard pin box. The newer trucks with the slightly higher bed height have not been an issue with clearances for the side or rear, but each trailer is different so I can't guarantee complete functionality. You do want 5-6 inches between the top of the side rails and the underside of your 5th wheel. I've attached a photo to assist. This...

  • Compatibility of Reese Goose Box for CM Flat Bed with Recessed Gooseneck Hitch Ball
My contact at Reese says it will work fine in a CM Flatbed with the recessed gooseneck hitch. At 4 inches from the very bottom of the coupler where it connects to the gooseneck hitch ball, the clamp mechanism of the Goose Box # RP85FR (replacement for the RP9463) at its very widest point is just 7-1/2 inches. The Because that clamp mechanism will sit about 1-1/2 inches above the floor of the recessed area, the Goose Box will have more than enough clearance to work just fine in that 14...

  • Recommended Routine Lubrication for Reese Goose Box
Some amount of noise is to be expected in any towing system, but certainly in a high-weight-capacity 5th wheel towing setup. The psi pressure inside the goose box air spring can be set based on feel, but the 35-40-psi range is an appropriate starting point. You may simply need to do some of the routine lubrication recommended in the (linked) instructions for model # RP85FR. This is covered on page 6 and indicates that before each use to grease the pivot shaft and to grease the goose ball....

A Reese Goosebox is a replacement pin box for the 5th wheel trailer that bolts on to the trailer in the exact same way as a standard king pin, but it couples not to a 5th wheel hitch but to a gooseneck hitch ball...
