Cable chain installation Step 2

2. Reach around to the back of the tire and fasten the rear side cable by running the end with the metal stops through the eye of the hook on the opposite end.

Cable chain installation Step 3

3. Run any excess side cable through the metal clip.

Cable chain installation Step 4

4. Repeat this process on the front side of the tire.

Cable chain installation Step 5

5. Drive forward 1 car length, then check the chain and hand tighten it again if needed.

You can use rubber adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large, aftermarket tires - may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Cable Snow Tire Chains Review

Colin: Hey, everyone. It's Colin here at etrailer, and today, we're going to take a look at the line of Titan Chain cable snow tire chains. Now, there's a variety of sizes to fit your specific tire, so make sure you enter your year, make, model of your vehicle in our fit guide, and enter your tire size. It'll lead you to the one that'll correctly fit your tire. Now, it's always a good idea to keep a set of chains in your vehicle, and with these cable chains, these are something that's going to be a really good investment for if you live in an area where during the winter months you're only going to be getting snow or ice a couple of times over the winter months. These are going to just give you that extra traction through those lighter conditions. Now, if you live in an area where over the winter months you're getting really heavy snow or ice storms a lot during the winter months, I'd recommend maybe looking into a more heavy-duty set of steel chains. Titan Chain makes plenty of those, and we have them available here at etrailer, but again, back to these cable chains.

These are going to do very well through those lighter snow and ice conditions. These chains are also going to be a really economical choice, so you can have that safety net in the back of your vehicle in case you ever we're to encounter one of those lighter snow and ice situations. To be honest, with those set of steel chains, if you try to use those in lighter conditions, it's going to make for a very rough ride. It's going to wear down on the chain much quicker than these steel rollers will. The steel rollers, along with the low profile chain, make for a very smooth ride for having a set of chains on your tire. Now, each tire chain isn't specifically designed for one size tire. Each set of chains is going to fit a variety of tire sizes in a range.

Now, you can see that they're pretty loose on our tire right now, and we do have them really as tight as we can go, but that's where these rubber adjusters come in handy. These are sold separately here at etrailer. I highly recommend picking up a set if you're going to grab some cable chains as well. What these are going to do is pull down and keep tension on your chains and keep them snug against your tire, so you get a much smoother ride and keep getting that good traction. Let's go and show you how to install them real quick. It's really pretty simple.

You can see how it's pulling on each side to help make sure we get that traction that we need. You can see right there. Now, our chains are much tighter on our tire, so we're ready to hit the road. Now, the base of the chain isn't actually a chain. It's this really durable cable, and this cable is making up, like I said, the entire base all the way around and the cross-links. The cross-links are going to be kind of covered with all these low-carbon steel rollers.

Like I said, the roller makes for a very smooth ride, gives you that extra traction that you need, and the low-carbon steel construction is going to be very tough and durable. It's also going to resist rust and corrosion. These chains are also going to be classed as certified, meaning they're great for vehicles with limited wheel well clearance, which isn't necessarily the case for our SUV. Right here, you can see I've got plenty of space, but for smaller vehicles like sedans, maybe even vehicles where you bought some bigger tires, and it's taking up more space in the wheel well, these are going to be a great option. The chains do have a ladder pattern design, meaning they're forming these cross-links all throughout the chain. They are going to be very effective for starts and stops, and you do want to keep in mind that they do have a speed rating of 30 miles per hour, so just make sure you're keeping it slow out there and staying safe. We do get this nice durable case that makes for very easy storage when they're not in use. You can just roll them up, throw them in here, and then toss it in the back of your vehicle. Now, whenever you get a new set of chains, whether it's these Titan Cable chains or any other sets you might get, I always recommend getting it out of the bag or the case, practicing installing them on your vehicle before you go out into the weather. If you're in your driveway or in your garage, practice using them so that when you get out in those situations, if you run into any problems, you'll know how to work through them. Now, I'll go ahead and walk you through that install process right now. Now, the first thing you want to do is lay your cable chains out, and just check them over for any tangles or kinks or twists. Get all those out. After you've used them a couple of times, it's never a bad idea just to go ahead and check for any broken links or rollers. With these being new chains, and if you've only used them a few times, then you're probably not going to have to worry about that. What we'll do is just grab them and then drape them over the top insides of our tire. Now, here on the backside, we need to make our first connection. That's just feeding this cable into the channel right there. We want to get it as tight as we can. We got to the second one, and that should do for now. If we go to the front and we find that it's still a little loose, we can come back and tighten it up a little more. Let's go to the front side and do the same thing.Just feed it through. We're at the second one right there, which is the same number we did on the backside, but if we want to, we can go one more up. That seems to do the trick and keep our chains snug. See if we can go to the fourth. Looks like we can, so that does get our chains a little bit tighter. However, per the instruction, we want to make sure we're staying within one. So from here, you have the option of going back to the third or going back to the backside and adjusting it, whichever way you feel more comfortable with. We're going to go ahead, go to the backside, and make that adjustment. Now, if you decided to get the optional rubber tensioner, go ahead and throw that on as well. Then from there, go ahead and repeat this process for the other side. Once you've done all that, you're going to be ready to hit the road.Well, I hope this information helped you guys out, but that's going to do it for our look at the line of Titan Chain cable snow tire chains.

Review from a similar Ladder Cable in Tire Chains

Purchased Titan Tire Chains for Wide Base Tires - Ladder Pattern - Square Link part TC3229S for a 2018 Ram 2500 with OEM 275/70/R18 tires. These are great chains and very heavy-duty for wide base tires. I mounted them on the rear axle of the Ram and discovered the chain in close proximity to the P-Brake cable, too close for my comfort. I believe the wide base chains are too wide for these OEM tires and fit was pretty loose. One could gain more clearance near the E-Brake by attaching the inside hook to the end (last) link. Then using a chain a tightener do your best to take up all the outside slack. I just was not comfortable with the overall fit so I send these chains back. Very painless return made easy by etrailer because they emailed a return UPS label. After reviewing tech info and reviews I purchased Titan Alloy Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - Square Link part TC2533 for the 2018 Ram 2500. These are regular duty and a better fit. These chains offer a lot more clearance for the P-Brake cable. They are a cleaver design, have great carrying case and are fairly quick to install. I have not purchased winter tires for this vehicle so the Ram need chains to pull a travel trailer up and down our snow-covered road.

Review from a similar Ladder Cable in Tire Chains

Titan Chain Cables are great quality and so easy to use. We were able to intuitively put them on and take off quickly. Etrailer has the best prices I've seen after researching. Also, they have the BEST customer service, specifically Jane S. & Tammie P. I was not familiar with cables and our Subaru had specific clearance requirements. They made sure I received the correct type, fit and clearance for my car. We highly recommend!

Review from a similar Ladder Cable in Tire Chains

Just received my chains yesterday. I have to say, first of, customer service is EXCELLENT! I had questions on which chains were best for my SUV and I was promptly responded with suggestions and links to videos. I went with these tire cables for my 2015 Dodge Durango SXT Plus. There was question about clearance issues with brake lines on the Durango and these seem to be very low profile and made for lower clearance. The price was right too. I did a dry install today and it was a breeze. Took way longer to fold these back up and put back into the storage bag! Lol! (That's not these chains fault, it's user error...) I took some pictures but note it was my first time installing tire cables so I'm going to have to center them a bit more. I purchased the Titan chain multi arm rubber chain adjusters and they did make a difference on how snug the cables fit, so I would recommend them. We only plan on using them on very rare occasions when we venture up the mountain, so in sure if you live where it snows all the time, you will probably look at higher prices chains, but I think these are perfect for the occasional use. I will update after our Big Bear trip if we use them to reflect actual use. Thank you etrailer, they also upgraded my shipping to get here a couple days earlier just because... that was amazing!

I won't be able to test the quality of the tire chains until winter. That is, however, if we get any snow. The price was very good and the order process and tracking system were one of the best I've ever used. Good job, E-Trailer! Doug at Anderson Island, Washington

Did the job and got me to the mountains! Here’s a pic from Sequoia National Park. Would definitely use with the bungee cord type tire chain adjusters to help keep the chains tight.

Review from a similar Ladder Cable in Tire Chains

Bought the Glacier v-bar chains for the rear tires in extreme conditions and the Titan cable chains for lighter duty, also to be installed on the rear tires. Videos show that the cable-chains can be installed on the front tires of a 2020 or greater Toyota Tacoma, though not recommended by the owner’s manual. These cables are S-class compatible so they should work on the front tires, however caution should be taken as appropriate. I would recommend only installing on the front tires after the v-bar chains have been installed on the rear tires and extra traction is deemed worthy. Both the Glacier and Titan multi-arm adjusters were ordered in support of the chains. Parts arrived as ordered in a timely fashion. Have not installed or used these products at the time of review.

I was moving across country through the mountains and saw there was going to be a lot of snow when I started the trip in 10 days. Nobody in Southern California carried the chains I needed. The etrailer tire chains were priced right, arrived quickly and fit perfectly.

Great service again from a very reputable company. Tire chains arrived one day earily and in great shape. The video for installing 20" chains is excellent even for someone who has installed many. No pictures yet...hope I don't need to use them for a while!

Review from a similar Ladder Cable in Tire Chains

I purchased a set of tire snow chains for a 2014 Hyundai Sante Fe Sport AWD. The price was reasonable and I received them in a reasonable time period. The quality of the chains were great, and they came with their own carry case. I did add additional / optional rubber support tensioning straps. These items will stay with this vehicle for as long as I own it. Thank you, Rich Rossi

Review from a similar Ladder Cable in Tire Chains

For those with an F-250 with 20” wheels, you know the pain of figuring out what you can and cannot do, according to Ford’s owners manual, for chains/cables. If you live in a state that requires carrying chains (traction devices), figuring out what will work with the 250/350’s can be confusing. I knew I needed cables for the 20”s but couldn’t find the right ones that fit a 275/65r20, so after a few minutes online, I called the 800 number. Great response, very helpful, knew exactly what I needed and was even able to recommend the tensioners I needed. I was able to order them online within 5 minutes. The shipping on etrailers part was exceptional, not so much for UPS, but they still got to me in a very reasonable time. Overall, I’m super pleased with my etrailer online and on phone experience! You’re probably wondering about the cables I bought? I dunno, they look great, and the bag they came in was a plus, as it fits under the back seats no problem. The F-250 Fx4 really does not need cables, even with the stock Michelin’s ATX, took it up into the mountains with 2-3” new snow and more falling all day and didn’t experience any issues. But I gotta have them legally, so these are the ones I got and I think they’ll do very well if I ever get stuck.

  • Class S Compatible Tire Chain Recommendation for 2016 Honda CR-V
Only Honda can really answer that but most likely it's that they tested that specific Class S option and to be extra cautious they only want to recommend a specific chain for your vehicle. Since Class S compatible is a clearance measurement I'd be shocked if only that one specific chain fit well. The K-Summit chains part # TH02230K66 that you referenced are a fit for the tire size that came on your 2016 Honda CR-V of 225/60-18. These chains have the best clearances of all tire chains...

Like you said the tire size P225/80R18 on your 2016 Honda CR-V makes sense. In addition some tires have a load rating and a speed rating. That's the 99H. The 99 is an identifying code that means your tires can have a maximum of 1,709 pounds per tire. This doesn't mean your car can necessarily be 6,836 pounds(1,709 x 4) but if it could, the tires could handle it. The H is the speed rating which indicates the tires are rated for up to 130 mph. Now to the part that actually answers...
