Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig CB-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, youll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the chains.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip and tug it until it's tight.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Feed the tensioning chain through as many red clips along the side chain as you can, leaving room to still be able to stretch the hook across the tire. Attach the hook to the side chain directly across from the last clip you ran the tensioner through. The hook should face away from your tire.

6. Drive forward around 325' (about the length of a football field) and stop. Check the chains and tighten them as needed.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

The snow chains arrived quickly. They appear to the correct size for my tires for my vehicle, but I had difficulty in getting them to fit properly. However, there are two factors to consider: 1) I recently purchased new tires, which are at the maximum tire pressure and 2) I have never used snow chains before, so my experience in installing them was lacking. So, now I will await the net snowfall to try them out on the road for real.

Comments
Worked out as expected. I had the opportunity to use them three times during the wintersnowfall. I had difficulties the first time as I was inexperienced in using chains, but once I got them on, they worked very well. Te 2nd & 3rd time went much better in putting them on.

I used these chains for the first time to get me home after work when winter storm Jonas hit the east coast. The snow was so deep that I only had trouble when the snow started to pick my car off the ground. I made it all the way home with these chains but did notice a few links broke during the 30 minute drive home. I wasn't going any faster than 20-25 mph on the way home. I couldn't go any faster given how bad the roads were. These chains were easy to install and I did drive a few miles before stopping and retightening them as per the instructions. The chains can be used again even with the broken link but I will have to repair them in the spring or buy new ones next year.

Product was a perfect fit. Arrived quickly. Problem I had was clearance. While they say “will fit 2013 VW Jetta” and they do, they do not clear the inner parts sufficiently. They do say needs 12 mm clearance.
So unfortunately I will need to return these.

These chains only need 9mm of internal clearance if you are still looking: item # TH00023095

Nice set of snow chains to avoid being stuck if surprised by bad road conditions. It takes some practice to learn how to properly mount them so make sure you practice before actually needing them! Also pay attention when putting them back in their box after usage: they should be well dried to avoid rust and carefully folded to prevent tangling.

These chains fit nice and tight. Looks just like what I will need. Will have to wait to see them in action.

I was unsure about the best chains for my car but thanks to Sal M, I got the right set at a terrific price. Delivery was earlier than I expected, only four days. I followed the video instructions and installation was a snap. I have ordered from etrailer before and have never been disappointed. Thanks again for the prompt service.

Review from a similar CB12 in Tire Chains

I think I'm a douche bag, I haven't practiced with putting it on. I have the miracle car for Norther Minnesota! It all depends on the township plowing schedule. If they plow in a timely manner, I can get back off highway on road. If they don't I'm spinning with my cheap Ferrari. Yeah the car is great in fall Spring, summer! (VW TDI jetta). That's not to mention my hilly divided cement 6" pads driveway with glaze. I heard wolves @ 03:00 scraping concrete to get to work!
Gave you guys laugh for the day! You guys and girls, do great work! I'll get the Silverado out next time! Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Snow tire chains look great.
But storage
hard case was damaged with broken chips of plastic. Maybe better shipping packaging is required.

Haven't put them on yet, but will practice this weekend. The look very professional, packaging for shipment was great, no damage. I think the case look sturdy enough - it's not like I'm going to be using these very often. Happy with my purchase, and the tutorial videos online make it seem very simple.

Review from a similar CB12 in Tire Chains

I have to say I'm extremely satisfied with these tire chains!! They're so aggressive and work well with my corolla. My at is front wheel drive and the weight of the motors sits perfectly in line with the tire/chain combination. They bite and dig right in the snow and ice. My drive way is very long as you can see and quite dangerous in snowy conditions. I've had numerous times where I've had to slip the chains on and it was a breeze. They're so easy to put on and off. I feel extremely confident throughout the winter season with the Thule tire chains in the back of my trunk. Thank you so much! You guys have great products going!

Hi, Austin. Thanks for the review. I just purchased these same chains and am wondering if you have ever had any problem with the chains scratching or damaging the rims? Thanks

Review from a similar CB12 in Tire Chains

I live on a mountain top in Western North Carolina where one of our recent snow falls left 10 inches of snow the first night. I refer to my driveway as The Roller Coaster because it is so steep and curvy and at 6:30 the morning I first used the chains, it was so covered that I had to guess where it was. I have an '03 Subaru Forester and with my Thule chains, I was able to go where the snow plows hadn't gone with no traction problems whatsoever. It was a week before I was able to safely take them off the car, but they're in the back for the next time I need them.

etrailer is fantastic! I ordered the chains on Saturday, Dec 25, got confirmation of my order that same day and had the chains the following Wednesday. I recommend both etrailer and these chains without any reservations on either!

Review from a similar CB12 in Tire Chains

Great chains. I use a set of four on a subaru outback. Living at elevation, snow and ice. Not uncommon wintertime scene.

Pretty easy on (have a pair of leather gloves and headlamp), five minutes ideally to get all four on in the dark.

Practice with them before the storm.

Very easy off.

Will vibrate your teeth out if travelling on plowed roads, but that's not what they're intended for anyway. Take them off and throw them in the trunk.

Review from a similar CB12 in Tire Chains

Snow chains fit my application as advertised. Minor issue: one set of chains (I ordered two) label is obliterated. One container was placed on top the other without any padding or cushioning material. The top container destroyed the label of the bottom container. Not a huge problem as I know they are both the same size. If I needed to exchange them…like new and resell able may have been questionable. Otherwise, great service and communication, as always. Thank to all at etrailer.

Product exactly as described. Easy to install.
Bruno
and I looked at the chain and said, "now what." After looking at the instructional video we put them on in no time.

Hope I don't need them on my trip but ready if needed.

Review from a similar CB12 in Tire Chains

My rating is based on installation ease and fit. The chains fit well once I figured out how to install them. If you put them on regularly you would memorize how to do it. Since they will only be used in emergencies, I printed a photo of the chains installed and put it in with the chains. That way I can refer to it the next time I need them.
I bought the chains for a cross country trip in January from Pennsylvania to Idaho but never needed them!

Comments
Along with the picture, I recommend installing the chains in a dry test run so that you will be more familiar with them when it comes time to use them.

It further states that only low-profile S-Class chains should be used, only on the rear tires, and then only if the tire size is 225/60R17. If chains are used on any other tire size damage to the car can result. Therefore you should not use chains on your Mustang's...

  • Is There A Time Limit for How Long Tire Snow Chains can Be Left Installed
Snow chains can be left on as long as they are needed and there is snow on the ground. You do not want to use them on dry pavement though as that will wear them out quickly and damage the road most likely. Also, you have to go pretty slow with chains installed (around 35 mph max), so that could be an incentive to take them off as well.
