I would highly recommend that you do not drive on dry pavement with Tire Chains. Tire chains are designed specifically to be driven on ice and snow, if you drive on dry pavement you will very likely damage the chains. While there is no specific depth that the snow needs to be, only what is enough to keep the chain from making contact with the pavement. Soft snow could be 3 inches, while harder snow 1 inches, ice should be half of an inch, etc. It just depends on the condition of the snow. To try out the chains, all you need to do is put them on the tire to make sure they fit snugly which you could do in the garage.
