Adam: Hi everyone. Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains. Before ordering your chains, we do have a good fit guide on our website so you can type in your tire size. If you don't know where it is, here it is. This is what it's going to look like.
You're going to have three numbers, slash, about two numbers and then an R, and then you're going to have your rim size. Just put that into the fit guide and pick your tire so you have the right chains.Just so you guys know, be sure to pay attention to the description on our website. We have two different kinds of these. One is going to be 3.2 millimeters thick, and when I say that I'm talking about the links on the chains, and there's going to be another one that's going to be 3.5 millimeters thick. If you want the little bit bigger ones it's not too noticeable, but there is more metal there, so be sure to check our description so you pick the ones you want. These chains are going to get the job done, but let's focus on what sets these apart.
A lot of them are going to just be low carbon steel. These are titanium alloy, so they are going to wear down significantly less than some of the softer metals that you see on the market as well. Comparing them to the ladder pattern type, as you can see we almost have chain in all areas of our wheel. We have a little gap here, but it's going to provide a lot smoother ride than some of those thicker ladder style chains. Also, as you can see here, we don't have a whole lot of wheel well clearance.
These are SAE S class certified so you don't have to worry about scuffing up your wheel wells or anything like that because they do fit in here pretty nicely, and what really sets these apart is going to be just how they protect your rims and also how easy they are to install. These bumpers are going to protect all that from scratches or anything like that, but the coolest part about it is going to be this little gadget right here. The self-tensioner I've had a really good experience with. It's super easy and it's actually kind of fun. So if we we're to just take it off, you just rotate it like so, so we can just pull it out but then if we wanted to maybe just put them on, all you got to do is just twist this and it just self tightens for you. So as you start driving as well and these chain starts shifting, it's going to keep and continue to pull on those chains to keep it nice and tight.
It's super, super easy and something that's pretty unique to the chain game. One other thing that's a big plus for me with tire chains is the fact that we just have to kind of fish our chains behind our tire on the bottom, but then we do the rest up here. A lot of the ladder pattern style chains you have to lay on the ground and as you can see, we don't have a whole lot of distance between the ground and bottom of our vehicle, and if we're putting on tire chains, we probably got snow on the ground. I'm not really wanting to crawl around on the snow because I'm either stuck or just in a crummy situation. With this one, super nice. Everything's up top here. Make a connection here and down there, and then just twist the knob and then you're pretty much ready to go.I don't really live in an area where it gets too bad of snow, so usually I just kind of wing it. But if I we're to grab some chains, I would definitely recommend these. I messed with a lot of them here. As you can see on our website we have a whole lot of different kinds and designs for tire chains. These are just super easy. It's not a hassle, and at the end of the day, if you're putting tire chains on, you don't really want to have any other hassles coming with it. Make this as simple as it can and this is definitely one of my top picks, but one other thing that I want to show you guys to see how fast I can do it, just to undo everything and put it back in our case.I'm going to start just by twisting this, pulling this, unhooking this and this and this. I just lay it down. One thing I found to be easiest is actually just making it into a circle like so, just so it goes into that pack a little bit easier. These don't really tangle up too bad either, which is a plus for me. They do come in a pack of two, so if you have an all wheel drive vehicle like the one we're using here, you just basically get two sets whenever you buy them on our website, because you probably have the same tire both front and back.Compared to some of those canvas bags, this one is pretty tough. I don't really think the chains are actually going to poke through here over time, and it has a zipper so they're going to stay in there pretty easily, and with those canvas bags you kind of have to ball them up to carry them around. This has got a nice handle. It's going to make transporting them pretty easy. Now that we've gone over some of those features with you guys, let's just go ahead and install them. We're just going to grab one for now. Sort it out real nice. Set that to the side for now, and we're going to go ahead and do our best to untangle everything. Make sure everything just sits right, and lay them down. We want to make sure we don't have any kinks in our links or anything like that, that everything's laying properly. Another thing we do need to make sure of is on one side we're going to get an extremely smooth side and on the other side it's going to have a couple more jagged edges. We want that jagged side to be facing away from our tires, just to prevent any unnecessary wear. Now we can go ahead and slide one end, the one with our self-tensioner here, behind our tire into the other side. Take both ends and reach in that wheel well and make that connection just like so. Then while we're back here, might as well just drape these chains over on both sides. We want these cross chain sections here to be in the middle of our tread. Do your best. Once you have it somewhat done, we can take the red links here and our red hook, and just connect that. Make micro adjustments as you're going, and now all we really need to do is, as of right now I can't really pull on this cable here, so we're going to rotate this little red dial here to the open tab. Now that's going to allow us to pull that out. On the other end of it, we're going to get this plastic red piece here. We're going to do our best to try to connect our red hook to it like so. Now all you got to do, this is the fun part. You just got to rotate this back, you're pretty much ready to go.Now that we have these installed, we do suggest that you kind of roll over them a couple times, get back out and check, make sure everything's still nice and tight, and it probably should be because of this awesome self-tensioning system. You can do that same exact process for all of your wheels. This one right here is an all wheel drive version, so you can put it on your front or your back, either or, or all four. Well everyone, that just about does it for our look at the Pewag Servo RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains.

The storage case came with one broken snap closure, but Etrailer jumped right on it it and replaced the case. Now that is customer service!

Excellent ordering and delivery process. The product (Pewag RS Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains) arrived sooner than I had expected. I have not installed them yet but they appear to be highest quality and sturdy, substantial weight.

Used the chains to pull people on my road during snow storm last year. One lady was stuck so bad tow truck was gonna charge her $250 to get her out. Backed down a ice covered hill, hooked ip and never spun getting her out. Recommend these to all

We used these chains going up to Truckee and they were the easiest chains we’ve ever installed. Highly recommended!

Very good. Relatively quick to mount. It helps if you practice it once before the first use. I use them on a Toyota Corolla. Would buy them again.

I have never been more pleased with a purchase decision than I am with these snow chains. They fit my car perfectly and were easier to install than I expected. If you have ever used on-ground cable chains, you know there are three connections that must be made, plus any adjustments to the tension device. With these chains, the connections are easy and the self-tightening tension device is impressive. At first I was not interested in this feature, but after using it I can appreciate how it will keep the chains tight and secure. I was also impressed by the design of the carrying case. I expected it would be difficult to replace the chains in the case once removed. Wrong. They easily fit back into the handy plastic case. Further, the chains came with plastic gloves to slip over your your hands (even with winter gloves) to keep your hands and lower arms clean. It's a bit odd to be so excited about a product that I hope NOT to use. But I drive to ski resorts all over the West and encounter chain restrictions often. Although I have all-wheel drive, I don't have snow tires and recent chain restrictions in Mammoth, CA require chains or 4-WD with snow tires on all wheels. Now, I'm actually looking forward to using the chains. I'm so pleased, I may purchase a second set for my wife's car. Finally, etrailer.com was great too work with. Their rep ( thanks Donna!) helped me find the right size chains for my wheels. Thanks so much!

So easy to put on, and worked great! Literally 5 mins on and off.
My only issue is the "ikea"type instructions, with images only. I had to find someone with the same chains on the side of the road to help me. Once he showed me, it's easy as pie.

First, I thought reviews were about using the product (Pewag tire chains); not about giving it 4 stars before you even took it out of the box.
Now for a review from some one who actually put them on a tire. They are certainly a big improvement in tire chains. But if you are putting them on a sedan with limited wheel-well access you better do it first in your garage. The inside hook is a disaster to connect; especially, with limited access and visibility. The inside hook definitely need to be replaced with something simpler to connect the two ends of the inside chain together. My reason for a 3 star rating.
Next, to get the chains properly laid out on the tire takes some doing. That said, the cable on the auto tensioner need to be a 1/4” longer. That’s right, the difference between and easy connection of the auto tensioner and 5 minutes spent trying to get the chain ends closer.
Finally, and really, really important, is how you remove the chains. Once you disconnect the chains, you do not want to just drop the chains off the back of the tire. There is a lot of chain and the auto tension cable to catch on some part of the front suspension preventing you from removing the chain. This ability to catch on something is aided by the plastic circular-shaped tubes that hold the back chain in a circle. I know; because it happened to me. O no! I thought for a while I was going to have to remove the tire to unhook the chain. Fortunately, I was able to reach over the tire and unhook the auto-tension cable that was hooked around a part of the car’s front suspension.

Great price, fast delivery and a great product. You made buying my Pewag chains an easy decision.

There are many types of tire chains available today. When you want reliable, relatively easy to install chains, this is a great choice. In addition, it appears that they will wear well.
There is no available reliable data available on the strength of tire chains when high levels of horsepower are delivered through them. My personal experience is that my 300 hp pickup can easily break chains in this design category. I have never broken link chains with cam tighteners. Those conditions require the chain to be very snug. No looseness can be permitted.
The link chains fail when hopping takes place. Little doubt that will be true for these as well. Avoiding hopping requires high skill and the willingness to say, I am turning around and going back. Given the chain design, it does run very smoothly. This will minimize the likelihood of hopping.

I have a 2015 Ford Cmax which in the manual states that no chains or cables are to be used due to limited clearance. I bought these anyway and have used them twice with no issues. I hate putting on chains or cables but these are fairly easy. The advantage to these is that they can be put on without moving the car. First time was on a steep driveway, second on a mountain turnout with deep snow. They auto tensioned as described and a fairly smooth ride compared to typical cables or chains. Your video convinced me to try them even though Ford doesn't recommend anything...which means I'd have to use a different car to go skiing.

I haven't used these yet, but I am very familiar with chains in general. I bought these to put on my wife's car, and wanted something easy for her to use. We put them on to teach her, and she was able to put them on pretty easily. I have used pewag truck tire chains, and if these are anything like them, they are great. 4 stars for ease of use. When I do use them, I'll update this review.

Outstanding product! Very well-designed tire chain, quality components, easy to install, and terrific grip.
I researched this purchase from some time and paid a little more for this quality product. We live in an area with very steep hills and quite a bit of snow and ice that goes unmanaged by the city. I figured these chains would be easy to install (I didn't look a the instructions before I took them out to put them on and had them on in 11 minutes), last a long time, not cause damage to my Lexus SUV, and provide excellent traction. They meet all my expectations.

The package came on time as you said it would! The directions were pictures with little text in a vinyl/plastic insert that fits nicely in the case. Watching the video helped a lot, should have looked at first before I installed one. I did it right but the video made it faster the second time! The case is compact and has a rigid separator plate that keeps the two chains separate.
The service on the telephone was superb rate it a 10. This was reassuring since their are so many choices.
The chains fit like a glove and now I hope I never need them!

Simply amazing. It took me only 5 minutes (or maybe less) to install and un-install one tire in my garage as a test. Best product and the best offer. Thank you very much. Oh, delivery was also excellent, its timing and the way it been delivered.
Highly Recommend.

Very easy to put on! Fairly easy to take off. No idea why I drove around with those crappy cables for the last few years - LOL. These chains require very little effort and store easily in the bag and work extremely well. Very happy with them.

Their customer service is awesome!! They reached out to me via email as soon as they noticed delay and kept me updated on the delivery status, and also followed up after the delivery. We now have the chains we need for winter weather! We are very pleased to finally find the right snow chain for our tire size after looking around for 2 years! (235/40 R19, very little clearance)

Received the tire chains today. No adverse driving conditions to test them on. Will put them on tires this weekend - to check for fit and to practice installation instead of when they are needed.
