Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Spare Wheel/Tire for Karavan Double WaveRunner Trailer
Hey Rob, thanks for all the info on your trailer wheel/tire. You could use the part # AM3S331 which is correct tire size and wheel size as well as wheel bolt pattern. Your tire size means it is a 13 inch wheel but also the tire size is 185/80-13. What kind of wave runners do you have?

  • Recommended ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire for a 2011 Jayco Pop Up
Yes, you can but we also have a few sets of ST185/80 D13 that will fit your Jayco Pop Up. The Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - item # AM3S331 would be the best option. This is a Load Range D tire with a 1,660 lbs weight capacity. The rim has a 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern.

  • How to Choose Correct Replacement Tires for a 2001 Coleman Bayside Pop-up Camper
The price of tires has risen over the last decade, but that is the case with almost everything. The best way to choose the correct replacement tires is by the tire size listed on your current tires or on the trailer's identification plate. If you can tell me the tire size or send me the picture of the tire information on your trailer, I would be happy to give you a few recommendations. I did some research on your camper, but I have found different tire size information, so it would be...

  • Tire and Wheel Options for a ST185/80-D13 Trailer Tire
In general, radial ply tires are better for long highway trips whereas bias ply tires are better for short trips that may lead you offroad. However, we only offer bias ply trailer tires in a ST185/80-D13. We currently have 3 wheel/tire combos in your size all of which have a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2" lug pattern. I have attached these options for you below but you will want to use the attached help article to ensure you have chosen the correct lug pattern. Loadstar Tire/Galvanized Wheel:...

  • Choosing Between Radial or Bias Ply Tires for Boat Trailer
The only instance where we might conceivably recommend a bias ply tire over a radial tire would be for farm or agricultural use where the tire would primarily be used on non-paved surfaces. This is due to the fact that the thicker sidewalls used on bias-ply tires would offer more stability. For a boat trailer, or any other trailer used on pavement a radial tire is preferable. A radial tire will have a more flexible sidewall, which provides better tread contact with the pavement. Radial...

  • Replacement Tire Recommendation for an ST185/80R13 Size Tire on a Travel Trailer
The load range D on the Loadstar ST185/80D13 # AM1ST79 actually gives you a higher weight rating than the C load range. For this size D is 1,710 lbs at 65 psi while C is 1,480 lbs at 50 psi. It doesn't hurt to have a tire that is rated for more weight and the benefit to this tire is that it has a max speed rating of 81 mph. If you need a wheel as well then I recommend part # AM3S331 as this is the same tire but it comes with a white wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. Bias tires,...

  • Can 15 Inch Tires and Wheels be Put on a Trailer with 14 Inch Tires and Wheels
You can go to a larger size tire on your boat trailer as long as the larger size will fit. If you went to a 205/75-15 tire size the width would not be an issue but it will be 0.4 to 0.8 inches taller than a 215 or 205 size 14 inch tire, respectively. There would need to be greater than 0.2 to 0.4 inches above the existing size to go to a 15 inch, which seems very likely. The most common wheel bolt pattern for a 205/75-15 is going to be a 5 on 4-1/2 inch. I have linked a help article that...

  • Can Bias Trailer Tires Be Replaced with Radial Trailer Tires
Yes, as long as the actual tire size is the same, a radial ply tire like the Kenda ST185/80R13 # AM10208 will fit onto the wheel just the same as the bias alternative # AM1ST79 it's replacing. Radial trailer tires differ from bias models due to the 90 degree angle the cords run to the direction of travel (compared to a 32 degree angle on bias). This allows radials to flex a bit more for better ground contact and stability. The physical fit onto an existing wheel and trailer suspension...

  • Replacement Tires and Wheels for a Utility Trailer with P185/70R14 Tires and 5 on 4-1/2 Wheels
I would recommend replacing the tires along with the wheels on your utility trailer. The tires that you currently have on your trailer are passenger car tires which can be identified by the P at the beginning of the tire size and it is not a common trailer tire size. Trailer tires will have an ST, or special trailer, designation on the tire size. Trailer tires are constructed with a stronger sidewall and can handle higher air pressures which are needed when carrying a load on a trailer....

  • Can a 14x6 Trailer Rim be Replaced by a 14x5 Rim
Going to a skinnier trailer rim like what you are looking to do shouldn't be a problem. A rim that is 1 inch thinner should work just fine. All of the 14 inch trailer tire size we offer are confirmed to fit 14 by 6 inch and 14 by 5 inch rims so you should be able to still use your current tire size.

  • Should Radial or Bias Tires be Used for a 3500lb GVWR Pop Up Camper Trailer
I can clear this up for you really quick. Radial tires run cooler and track better than bias ply tires. Bias ply tires are typically a little more heavy duty and better for rough terrain. But you can use either one provided that the size and capacity is enough for the trailer. It is usually best to stick with the tires recommended by the trailer manufacturer. In this case it would be a bias ply tire. For just a tire in an ST185/80-13 we have # AM1ST79 which is rated for 1,725 pounds at...

  • Can a Trailer Spare Tire be Slightly Smaller in Diameter than the Rest of the Tires
Typically we recommend the use of the same tire size when picking out a spare tire for a trailer, but since the overall tire diameter difference between the two tire sizes you listed is only .3 of an inch you would be fine for just getting the trailer home or to a shop. If you aren't in a hurry to get the spare tire I would recommend that you order in the correct size tire just to be on the safe side. • Tire Recommendation for a Coleman Taos Pop Up with 13 inch Wheels
You didn't list your tire size, but if you have a 185/80D13 like the part # AM3S331 that you mentioned I have a better recommendation I can make. You would be better served with the part # TTWTRTM1758013C as it is a radial tire that has an 81 mph speed rating (most have a 65 mph rating) and is a radial which is a better tire setup than a bias-ply like the tire you mentioned. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A...

  • Will 175/80-14 Tires Replace 175/80-13 Trailer Tires
The only difference between a 175/80-13 and a 175/80-14 is the height. The 14 inch model will be 1 inch taller. You need to make sure there is 1/2 inch of space available above the existing tires size to accommodate the larger size. I have included a couple of links on trailer tires for you. Also, a 14 inch tire will not fit a 13 inch wheel so you would need to replace the wheels as well. A 175/80-14 is not a common trailer tire size. If you meant a different size, let me know.

They can be balanced at a tire shop if you'd like but it isn't necessary. The tire and wheel combo you referenced, Loadstar # AM3S331 is a 185/80D13 bias tire that has a Load Range D. We offer both of the trailer tire sizes you mentioned, ST175/80R13 and ST185/80D13. In terms of size they are very close to one another; the ST175/80R13 size measures 24.1-inches in diameter and 6.9-inches wide while the ST185/80D13 size measures 24.4-inches in diameter and 7.2-inches wide. Both tire sizes fit on the same wheel sizes, 13-inchers that are 4-1/2, 5 or 5-1/2-inches wide. In most trailer applications these two tire sizes are going to be interchangeable. Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM3S331 is a bias ply construction whereas the 185/80R13 you have is a radial tire construction. The difference is how the plies run inside the tire. You would want to keep the construction type the same on the trailer for best performance and even tire wear. In size 185/80-13 we only have bias ply tires. This type is better for rough rounds or gravel but do fine on pavement. Radial tires are best on pavement but will work fine on rough roads or...
