Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Spare Wheel and Tire for Aluma Trailer 6310H
You'll have to get me the bolt pattern and tire size that is stamped on the sidewall of what you currently have on your trailer for me to determine what the correct spare would be.

  • How to Get Wider Tires on Trailer With ST145R12 Tires
The 5.7 inch width of a ST145/R12 tire is by far the widest 12 inch tire, so in order to get a wider tire you will need to upgrade to a ST175/80R13 tire, which measures 7 inches wide. This means you will also need new, 13 inch wheels for the tires to fit. Assuming you have the clearance and you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern (if you aren't sure you can use the guide/template I linked below), you simply need to choose the option with the correct load capacity, either C or D: - Load Range...

  • Changing ST185/80-13 Tire Size on Shorelander Boat Trailer
Because the size of both tires is so similar, you can certainly use the # AM31952 as a replacement. An ST185/80-13 tire will typically be slightly larger in diameter and width than an ST175/80-13 tire, but only by around 1/4 inch. Although the # AM31952 has a higher load rating than your existing tires, this higher rating will not provide any additional capacity over and above the capacity of your axle. For instance, lets say that your boat trailer uses a 2,000 lb axle. Two of the #...

  • Spare Tire For Boat Trailer With 5 on 4-1/2" Wheel Bolt & 195/55R15 Tires
Hey Jeff, The reason the selection seems limited is because you have passenger tires on your boat trailer as there aren't 195/55R15 sized trailer tires. So there isn't a trailer tire and wheel you can get that's going to be the same size. A 195/55R15 tire measures 23.4" in diameter and 7.7" wide, and the closest size to that in a trailer tire is a 24" diameter, 6.9" wide, ST175/80R13 size tire. So you can go with that for a spare in a pinch, or replace all your tires and wheels with that...

  • Do Trailer Tires Need to Be Balanced
It is not a requirement to balance trailer tires like you do for your vehicle tires. The reason for this is because the trailer tires have a tendency to "throw weights". This means that the weights come off the wheels. This can happen for a number of reasons, but it is not uncommon for the weights to be thrown off when towing a trailer empty (the trailer bounces excessively because of the no load conditions) or when making very tight turns on tandem or tri axle trailers. Furthermore, the...

  • Comparing 12" Tire Options ST145/R12 And 5.30-12
Hey Neil. The # AM30861 and # AM35354 are very similar in size. The Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM35354 is actually slightly smaller in diameter than the Kenda 5.30-12 tires, so out of the two 12" tires you mentioned, this will be your best bet for an upgrade. I do still suggest that you measure to make 100% sure you will have enough clearance to fit a tire 5.7" wide and 21.3" in diameter.

  • Can I Upgrade The 12 Wheels On My Trailer To 13 Wheels?
Upgrading wheels on a trailer is a pretty common thing to do, but you want to make sure you have the space to do so. You should have at least 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender/wheel well and then around 1.5" between the tire's sidewall and the side of the fender/wheel well. This measurement is less important than the space at the top of the tire, but is still something to keep an eye on. With that said, as the average 5.30x12 tire will have an outer diameter of 21.9"...

  • Larger Replacement for a 4.80-12 5-Lug Trailer Tire and Wheel
I have several options to upgrade 4.80-12 wheel/tires on a trailer without replacing hubs, ranging from 13" - 15". The best option will really come down to how much space you have available and this will be different for each trailer. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel part # AM31952 would be a good option assuming you have the correct amount of space for the 24" diameter x 7" wide dimensions. • Can I Upgrade from 12 Inch Wheels to 13 Inch Wheels on a Boat Trailer
Generally speaking, it is not a huge deal to upgrade one size (12" to 13") so long as you have clearance but the other thing to make note of is the surface area on the hub. If you have a 2,000 lb trailer axle then your hub is likely only rated for use with 8"-12" wheels but if you have a 3,500 lb trailer axle then your hub is likely rated for use with 13"-15" wheels. However, there are hubs for either axle that will allow you to upgrade/degrade wheels so if you can confirm your axle capacity...

  • Can a Trailer with 12 Inch Tires and Wheels be Upgraded to 14 Inch Tires and Wheels
You do not necessarily have to change the axles or suspension to go to a larger tire size. What you will need to do though is determine how much space there is from the inside tire side wall and the trailer frame and how much space is available above the tire (if the trailer has fenders that could interfere with a larger size). Then you can determine if a larger tire will even fit. If you could look at the tires you have now and tell me the size I can tell you how much larger a 14 inch...

  • Comparing Loadstar and Karrier ST175/80-13 Tires
I'm not quite sure why it's called a "rating" column because that just has to do with how many reviews have been left on the product page. The biggest differences between the Loadstar # AM3S158 and the Karrier # AM31952, is that the Loadstar is a bias tire which means it will perform better for off-road applications, the Karrier is a radial so it will do better than the Loadstar on the highway. Attached are some review videos for you to check out as well.

  • Benefits of Upgrading to 5.30-12 or 175/80-13 Tires On a Boat Trailer
The benefits of upgrading to larger tires are better weigh ratings, higher speed capacity, larger wheel/tire selection as well as reduced wear/tear on the hubs. If you have the needed space then this is a great option. The 5.30-12 tires are 21.9" diameter x 5.6" wide, I recommend the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30850. • Upgraded 13 Inch Wheels/Tires for a Pontoon Boat Trailer
The new 175/80-13 tire will be 3-1/2" larger in diameter than the old 205/65-10 tire you have now. This means you will lose around 1-3/4" of clearance. I recommend that you have at least 3" so you will be close but ultimately the choice is up to you. The next size down would be a 145/80-12 (Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10140 with Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel part # AM20134) and you will only loose around 1/2" with this size.

The best upgraded tire size option for your trailer will come down to how much space you have avavailbe. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel part # AM31952 measures 24.1" diameter x 7". A 4.80-12 measures 20.5" diameter x 4.8" wide so you need to account for another 3.6" diameter and 2.2" width. If the trailer is supposed to have 185/80-13 tires on it, then you should stick with that tire size and use # AM3S334. This is the correct size tire with a galvanized wheel. The only difference is this is a bias tire and not a radial. A bias tire the cords inside run at a 32 degree angle from the direction of travel and on a radial tire, the cords run 90 degrees across the width of the tire. The ST185/80R13 will only be about 1/2" taller and about 1/4" wider, so as long as you have at least 3-1/4" between the top of your current tire and the bottom of your fenders you will be just fine.
