Upgrading Tires And Rims On A Boat Trailer From 12" To 13"

Updated 02/05/2024 | Published 02/03/2024

Question:

I want to upgrade the tires and rims on my boat trailer. I currently have 4.8 -12 tires and was wanting to purchase your Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 with black mod wheel item # AM31990. I am not 100 sure I have enough clearance with my existing fenders. Do I have free returns on this item with a full refund if for some reason this item doesnt fit? I have purchased many items with you in the past, and appreciate your great customer service.

Hey Neil thanks for your question. I will start by saying that we should be able to determine exactly what size tires you can or can't use and we can avoid the need for a return. I have linked our return policy for you below if you want to read it over.

As far as upgrading the rims on you boat trailer, it will completely depend on what kind of clearance you have in the wheel well/fender area. Our rule of thumb is that you want 3" between the tire and the fender on all sides, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the trailer frame.

The 4.80-12 tires are about 20.7" in diameter and 4.9" wide when fully inflated. If you were to go up to a ST175/80R13 tire like the Kenda Karrier # AM31952, it will be 24.1" in diameter and 7" wide. I am not sure exactly how much clearance you have with the current tires, but most trailers would probably not have room for this kind of upgrade without some degree of modification.

Another option for an upgrade could be to go with a larger 12" tire like a 5.30-12. These would be about 21.9" in diameter and 5.5" wide, but again it just depends on the clearance. A 5.30-12 tire like the Kenda # AM30861 will have a higher ply rating (8) and a higher max load (1,250 lbs) than the 4.80-12 tires. So you can get a more durable tire without going too much larger.

You can feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
