Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • 4-80-8 Tire/Wheel Combo Needed as Well as 1 Spindle for Log Splitter
The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30000 is an excellent tire and wheel combo that has a 4 on 4" bolt pattern and has review great reviews from our customers. If you just wanted the wheel it is part # AM20001 and if you just wanted the tire it is part # AM10002. We also have the Redline Spindle # TRU94FR which measures 1.25" where it installed on the axle but it measures 0.999" where the bearings ride and uses 1" bearings, # L44643. You would have to get this...

  • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Tires Be Upgraded To Larger Size For Higher Speed Rating
Hello again Mark; as long as you don't exceed the 65 mph rating you can stick with a tire like the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10002. Moving to a larger tire with a higher speed rating is going to mean a fairly large size difference. To see if you can use one of these tires you will need to measure for clearance. The closest thing that also uses an 8" wheel would be the Kenda 215/60-8 # AM3H290. This has a speed rating of M for 81 mph. However, it is significantly wider...

  • Difference Between Trailer Tire Sizes 165/65-8 and 4.80-8
The tire size 165/65-8 is .4 of an inch taller than the 4.80-8 tire size and fits a rim almost two inches wider. The sizes are very similar but the 165/65-8 size is a bit different. Either size tire requires a different width rim. We have replacements on rims like the part # AM3H200 for if you have a 4 bolt wheel or part # AM3H220 if you have a 5 bolt wheel.

Hey Bryan, The metal fender I recommend picking up to match with your Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30000 is the etrailer # HP89VR. This comes as a single unit, so you'll need to order accordingly, and it doesn't have a skirt or backing plate, but we do have a mounting bracket kit # CE26065PGA that can be used for the installation.

  • What Pressure Should Trailer Tires Actually be Ran At
Trailer tire pressure ratings are different from vehicle tires. With trailer tires you want to always inflate them to the max psi rating when cold and as long as you aren't exceeding the weight capacity and speed rating any psi fluctuation will be totally fine and not need to be monitored. If you under-inflate them (sounds like you might have been) they will build heat up quickly which eventually leads to failures like blow outs. The # AM30000 should be ran at it's 60 psi rating. It...

Since prices fluctuate from time to time, the Kenda # AM30040 Load C, which is currently priced a little less than the Kenda # AM30000 Load B, is definitely the tire and wheel combination I would go with since it has a higher weight capacity. The only real differences that you will see is that the Load C tire will be able to stay a little cooler and handle higher weights with less stress. A few things you will want to keep in mind when operating; even though part # AM30040 has a higher...

  • Replacement Tires for Malone EcoLight Trailer MAL53FR to Provide Higher Speed Rating
The Malone EcoLight Galvanized Steel Trailer # MAL53FR does have a speed rating of 65-mph. This speed limit is a function of the specific tires supplied which are size 4.80/4.00-8. We offer wheels/tires in the same size and bolt pattern like the Kenda # AM30000, but they are rated for the same, maximum 65 mph. Tires of this size are typically rated at max speeds of 65 MPH. Going over the max speed certainly puts you at risk of overheating and tire failure.

However, as far as the wheel replacement, the only rims we carry that fit these sized tires have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern or a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and come with the tires already.
