Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • Determining The Correct Replacement Leaf Springs For A 2021 Keystone Passport Grand Touring TT
You could potentially replace your leaf springs with a larger capacity spring but will need to match the length of your current leaf springs to avoid having to remove and reinstall the hangers and rest of the suspension system, which is a giant hassle and a lot more costly than just replacing the springs. If you have double-eye leaf springs you'll need to measure from the center of one eyelet to the center of the other. If you have slipper springs then you'll need to measure from the...

  • 3,500 lb Rear Axle is Hitting Car Trailer Frame Are New Leaf Springs Needed
Hey Henry, Really appreciate the photos as that made it easy to see what the situation was, and yeah, that's definitely an issue as the axle should not be hitting the frame like that. New leaf springs are a good idea as yours seem a bit long in the tooth (so to speak), but I'd also get an over/under conversion kit. The kit will move your leaf springs to the top of your axle, creating more space from the frame. I assume since you mentioned a 7,000 lb trailer that you have 3,500 lb axles,...

  • How Can I Determine Hanger Spacing For A 27" Long Leaf Spring e97SR?
Hello James, thanks for reaching out. I can provide some rough guidelines for you, but there is not a "set in stone" hanger spacing for a 27" leaf spring like part # e97SR. Generally, for a single axle setup, your hanger spacing for a 27" spring would be between 25-1/4" and 26-1/2". I can't give you an exact number because the hanger spacing also depends on what size shackle straps and hangers you are using. Even if we knew all that, we can still only provide rough guidelines to go by....

  • What Weight Capacity Leaf Springs Are Needed For a 2017 Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 26DBH?
Looking up the information for your 2017 Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 26DBH I see it has a GVWR of 7,725lbs with a 725lb tongue weight which means you likely have tandem 3,500lb axles. You should find this information on the front drivers corner of your camper on the information tag. We currently have 23-1/8" # e59SR and 27" # e97SR leaf springs with the capacity for 3,500lb axles. These lengths are from the bolt hole center to bolt hole center on the leaf springs when the springs are...

  • What Leaf Spring do I Need for My 2015 Karavan Double PWC Trailer Measuring 27"?
Hello Ramzey, I found just what you need. I do not have a database that supplies me with what is on what trailer, in my research I see that the 2015 Karavan double PWC trailer, model WC-2450-84-L, is equipped with a single galvanized steel spring axle. This axle has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 2,935 lbs and a carrying capacity of 2,450 lbs., but uses 3,500 pound parts. Since your leaf spring is measuring 27" (hoping this is unloaded weight) you will need the 4-Leaf Double-Eye...

  • Recommended Leaf Springs for a 2022 Forest River Vibe Trailer
Hey Margarita. What specific model is your 2022 Forest River Vibe trailer and how did you get the 27" measurement on your leaf springs? You can add this information, along with any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment. Leaf springs like to stretch out over years of use so the best way to get an accurate measurement for replacements is to lift one side of the trailer up. Lifting the trailer up gets the weight off of that side of the leaf springs and you'll be able to get...

MORryde does have a suspension upgrade kit that I highly recommend. It comes with 1/2" thick shackles, along with wet bolts and bronze bushings. You will want to choose a kit based on the length of your current shackles. For 2-1/4" you need the # MR46ZR and for 3-1/8" the # MR76ZR. For replacement leaf springs you will need to know your axle capacity along with your spring eye to spring eye measurement. Your current leaf springs will be slightly elongated since they flatten over time so...

  • Identifying Old Camper Axles With 2-3/8" Diameter
Hi Dan; is there a tag on the axle? That would be the only real way for me to identify it for sure. I'm guessing you would have an old metal tag which should have a serial number. You could also check on the axle itself for a serial number engraved on one of the ends closer to the spindle if the tag isn't there. If you add this information in the comments below I will reach out to the manufacturer if they're still around to identify the axle. Also, # 58846 is a part number corresponding...

  • Availability Of 30-1/2" Long Leaf Spring For 3,500 lb Axle
Hello Richard, I do appreciate you reaching out, but I am sorry to say that we do not offer the leaf spring you are looking for. The closest thing we have for a 3,500 lb axle is the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e97SR which is 27" long so this would not be a suitable replacement for you, at least not without major modification to the trailer. Your best bet here will be to reach out to a leaf spring manufacturer like Dexter and see if they have anything that matches your specs.

Hey Shawn, Without accurate measurements there unfortunately isn't any way to help. We don't have any way of knowing what leaf springs are on any specific trailer so you'll have to measure them. While it won't be exact, it's really the only way to do it; the best would be to jack up the trailer and measure them without a load if at all possible, but if you can't then just measuring them as-is can suffice. Hey Kyle, first of all congrats on the trailer! It might look wrong but don't worry it's not. Since we are talking about less than an inch here of difference, I'd say with good authority that that's what happened.
