Video Transcript for Complete Breakdown of the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle

Today we're going to be taking a look at a brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle. The brake mounting flange gets welded to the spindle at the end of the axle to provide secure mounting plates for brake assemblies. This flange works with a 12" diameter brake assembly. It's going to come with the bolts already pressed in you can see that it's a five-bolt mount. The bolt pattern is 5 on 3-7/8", so that means that we have five bolts, and then from the center of this one to the center of this one, as well as this one to this one, it's going to measure 3-7/8". Center on center between these two is going to be 3". This is designed to fit 3" diameter axles. The bolt diameter is 3/8", so this will work with 4.400 lb, 6,000 lb regular duty, 6,000 lb heavy duty, 7,000 lb and 7,200 lb axles.

The diameter of the pilot hole, so the hole right here at the center, that's going to measure 2-3/4" in diameter. The flange itself is made from a durable steel construction, it's going to measure 1/4" thick. Taking a look at the overall measurements. Going side to side, it's going to measure about 4-1/2". Going this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of about 4-3/16". That's going to do it for today's look at the brake mounting flange for a 3" round axle.

Careful if you get this product. I specified for a 3" tube. What I got was ID 2.754". Thankfully I have a lathe and was able to bore it out to size.

Would be nice if the parts room checked the sizes before they send instead of grabbing what was on the shelf.

The part you received is correct. The flange is for use on 3 inch axles, but it does not mount to the axle. The spindles on 3 inch axles measure 2.75 on the shoulder where the flange should be welded. It should be mounted to the shoulder of the spindle right next to where the spindle is welded to the axle.

by:

This is an exelent flange if you want to convert an axel that is not allredy a breaking axel it worked great for me

by:

Part fits very well!

by:

High quality and well made. Made to fit the spindle of a 3" Axle. It fit, but the brakes would have been so far out on the axle that the hub would not even bolt on. Glad I checked before welding. Further investigation found that I have a shorter than average spindle length.
THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED!

Mobile home axles usually come in two "basic" sizes. The "smaller" size spindle, with the 1.9" grease seal and or 1-3/8" inner bearing (the larger spindle "usually" has a 2.25" grease seal and 1-3/4" inner bearing)
If you have the Larger axle, with the 1-3/4" inner bearing and larger grease seal then this mounting flange should work.

I had the 1.9" Grease Seal and therefore a shorter spindle length, so I had to weld the brake backing plate directly to the 3" axle tube.
THESE MOUNTING FLANGES WOULD NOT WORK FOR ME AND WERE RETURNED!
I put the brake assembly on the axle, reinstalled hub and bearings then tightened down. Next, put the brake assembly in the hub and adjust brakes tight to the drum while keeping both concentric. When both are tight together make sure brake adjusting holes are at bottom towards the ground and weld brake backing plate to the axle.

by:

It is a flange for a 3” round axle. It is to be welded onto the axle. Unfortunately, the inside diameter is ONLY 2.75 “. It will not fit directly onto the axle unless you do some serious grinding. It is possible that I do not know how it should be attached but....

Thank you for your review. The brake flange is designed to fit onto the spindle just behind the seals not on the 3 axle.

by:

I've been restoring a 1979 Hudson trailer on which the brake backing plates were welded right to the axles. That makes rebuilding the brake system impossible unless you cut off the exiting material and install these flanges. This is pretty much the only way to do it.

These flanges are stout -- 3/16" plate, laser cut for precision. If you install them properly you won't have to worry about the flanges failing.

These brake flanges have to be absolutely square and concentric on the axle, and the0y need to be at the proper depth relative to the spindle. I think the best way to get it right is to dry-fit everything and then jig the flanges and the brake backing plates in position with magnets or a similar means. When everything is in alignment, tack weld the flanges to the axles, then take all the other parts off and finish your welds.

Upon inspection if receiving my recent order I noticed that the packaging was sub par at best. The box didn't seem to be visually damaged externally, however the inside told a different story I ordered 2 sets of electronic brakes. Some hardware and a tub of packing grease. If you see the pictures attached, everything was thrown into a massive box without proper packing material and some of the items show signs of shipping damage. Some brakes were out of alignment and the grease canister was smashed almost to the point or rupture. For such a big company I would expect a little more care to be given to the several hundred dollars worth of parts in my order.

Great everything is working well,,,,

by:

Works perfectly on my old trailer which had welded on backing plates. I scanned it and was able to build three more with the plasma cutter.

by:

All the parts I ordered have arrived as promised and worked as they should, I will order from etrailer again as needed.

by:

I had to machine the parts so they fit my application of older mobile home axles.

by:

Bolts like up perfectly. The center hole needs to be bored out to be used on mobile home axles.
They can also be a challenge to weld square to the tube.

by:

This produce was delivered in record time. It is exactly what was needed to complete my project and get me back on the road with little to no down time. Thanks to all the team members at etrailer for their help.

by:

Just as advertised. Quick shipping and great price.

  • Can I Add Brakes To A Mobile Home Axle?
Hey Jim, thanks for reaching out. It is possible to add brakes to an axle. For that you will need to add the Brake Mounting Flange # 4-44-1 to your axle (dimension below). This will give you the 5-bolt flange for attaching the 12” x 2” brakes like part # AKEBRK-7-SA. If you can tell me your inner and outer bearing numbers I can check and see if we have a compatible hub for you. Mobile home axles can be tricky so we definitely want to be sure all of these parts will work together correctly.

  • Replacing Warner 12 Inch Electric Brakes & 6 Bolt Mounting Flange
So you'd have to change out everything, including the brake mounting flange, as the 6-bolt is simply not used anymore. There isn't a direct replacement from Dexter, so you'd need a 5-bolt brake mounting flange welded on (assuming you have a 3" diameter axle, which you should though you'll want to verify), the brakes, and a new hub and drum. The flange and brakes are the following: - Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle # 4-44-1 - Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 12" - 6,000 lbs...

  • Trailer Brake Assemblies For a 5.2K to 7K Axle With 12" Drum and 3-1/4" by 2-3/4" Flange Bolts
Most trailer brakes for 5.2K to 7K axles are going to use a 5 Bolt Flange # 4-44-1 like that which is found on the etrailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA. We do have the Dexter Brakes # 23-105-106-09 which also has a 4 bolt flange but the dimensions are slightly different than what you mentioned. These bolts are not a perfect square with the lower holes spread 2-1/2" on center, upper holes spread 3-1/8" on center and the holes vertically spread 3-3/8" on center. The 5 bolt flange also does...

  • Recommended Electric Brake Assemblies and Hub Drums for a 26ft Gooseneck Trailer
If your brake assemblies mount on a plate using 5 bolts, you most likely would be looking for a 12 inch diameter brake assembly like part # AKEBRK-6R and # AKEBRK-6L, but you could verify this by measuring directly across the center of your drum or the brake assembly. To recommend the correct hub drum for your application, I would need to know your current hub bolt pattern, as well as the bearings it uses. In order to determine your hub drum bolt pattern, you would need to measure center...

  • Trailers Backing Plate Is Not The Same Distance From The Drum Front And Rear
Hey Steve. If one of your axles is damaged or bent it could be causing the issue you described. Or it could be your trailer was equipped with two different axles. If the axle are not identical it could cause issued like uneven tire wear, or tracking issues. It could also be the way the parts were installed. Really hard to say without more info or without looking at the trailer. It may be the case that one or more axles on this trailer need to be replaced.

  • What Brake Flange Works For A 3" Round Axle
Hello Josh, thanks for reaching out. The Brake Mounting Flange # 4-44-1 is correct for a 3" round tube axle. It does not go around the axle tube. The flange is welded to the spindle. If you can tell me your inner bearing number, outer bearing number and seal size I can look into it and see if we have a compatible hub. Mobile home axles are not designed to be reused like this so finding parts that all work together can be tricky.

The bolt pattern for a 5 bolt brake mounting flange, like # 4-44-1 is 5 on 3-7/8 inches. What that means is it measures 3-7/8 inches from one corner to its diagonal counterpart.
