Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.


Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)


Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)


Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Spare Tire Carrier for 4 Lug Trailer Wheel
    I do have options for your 4 lug wheel but the Bumper Mounted Tire Carrier part # TR-1 only works with 5, 6, and 8 lug wheels. Unfortunately, we do not have any spare tire carriers that will work with a 4 lug wheel and affix to a 4" wide x 4" tall rear bumper. Check out the Fulton # FSTC1000301 which can mount on the trailer frame or back 4X4 inch bumper. I have attached a list of our spare tire carries that will work with a 4 lug wheel for you as well.

    It won't really be necessary to upgrade the load range of your trailer tires as the tires only need to be rated for the weight of the boat/trailer minus the tongue which is usually around 10-15% of the boat/trailer weight. That said, you could upgrade to a higher load range without issue for better peace of mind. The ride would just be a bit stiffer. I recommend the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30670 which has a load range c rating suited for use...

    We do carry that tire size in a Load Range C like the part # TTWSF48012C which would be my recommendation. This the best choice as it has a higher speed rating than most tires at 81 mph. Then for a spare tire carrier we have the part # FSTC1000301 which would work well. A tire of size 4.80 - 12 has an overall diameter of 20-1/2-inches and is approximately 4-inches wide. For a cover for that size you would want # CE27410.

The kit will allow you to install the carrier on a frame size up to 3" x 5".     We do have some tire/wheel combos that use an 8" diameter x 3-3/4" wide wheel with a 5-bolt pattern and for that I recommend the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Tire # AM30070 which comes with a galvanized wheel that will do better to resist rust and corrosion. This tire is a larger Load Range C which means it can handle 760 lbs at 90 psi. You just need to make sure that this tire size and load range match what you currently have otherwise your trailer will eventually develop a poor ride quality...
