Will The Draw-Tite Universal Spare Tire Carrier Work With My 8 Lug Wheels?

Updated 01/30/2026 | Published 01/25/2026

Question:

I am looking at your universal spare tire carrier for a tow hitch on my 1995 Ford F250 long bed. I want to make sure that the attachment sites on the carrier will match the heavy, full sized tire for my truck, before I buy it. my rim has eight lug nut openings and thetire is 265/75R 16 Could you please help?

Hey Debra,

The great thing about the Draw-Tite hitch spare tire carrier # 6715 is that it is universal! Meaning it will fit any bolt pattern and tire size. I have had people use this with that same bolt pattern with no issues. The one thing to keep in mind with this carrier is the 100lb capacity. With that larger tire size I would recommend double checking the weight, but you should be fine. It has been used with some 17" wheels bigger than yours with no issues.

It is labeled as a front hitch carrier, but it is perfectly fine to use in the front or the rear, whatever works better for your setup!

Debra ... I have a Camper Van RV that I needed to 'hang' a spare for long distant traveling. The RV manufacturer no longer provides spares as OEM, so I found this spare/hitch mount to give me piece-of-mind while travelling. Due to the deep recessed lugs on my rim, I actually had to find a somewhat custom mount due to the deep recessed lugs - however the lug holes/alignment where not a problem for the mount. The tires are 225/75/16 and with rim weigh about 80lbs. I have travelled over 16k miles with this rig and plan many more. I am actually using a Saris Swing Away rack to allow the spare hitch-mount to swing free from the back doors - which has worked great. Hope that helps.

I had to use a 2 inch wheel spacer on the carrier so that my spare tire would clear the vertical post. If you have a dually you will need more of an offset to make it fit. Stacking multiple wheel spacers would work in that case.

I installed a front mount receiver and spare tire carrier on my 2020Ram 2500. Made a three and half week to TX for the solar eclipse spring 2024. Only modification was I had to add an extension on the receiver to clear the truck grill. Made some other shorter trips. I live in VA.

I have this carrier on the front-mounted hitch of my 2014 E-350 4x4 (Quigley conversion) -- same wheels as the F-350. I needed a two-inch adapter to fit the deeper wheels. But the pattern is fine. Other than an annoying slight wobble (which I fix by jamming sticks in as shims), this mount has worked fine and is easily removed when I need to put the winch on ;) . It has stood up to a fair amount of off-roading and thousands of highway miles. It stands out from the grill somewhat but that's good because it allows plenty of airflow to the radiator. Even in summertime heavy traffic with 8,000 lbs of trailer on, I've never had a cooling issue.
