Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer and today we have the Yakima Roof Rack system which we'll take a look at on our 2021 Nissan Rogue. If you wanna carry around fun accessories like kayaks or ladders, or maybe you want a roof-mounted bike rack or extra cargo space in the form of a roof box, what you first need is a roof rack system. So this is the system from Yakima, which is ideal for if you want a premium roof rack that is strong, it's sturdy but it also gives you extra long crossbars spread. Compared to other brands, this gives you a wider platform with your crossbar staying further apart so you can carry those longer items like kayaks, ladders or even Christmas trees if you want. For your Rogue's roof, you wanna make sure there's enough clearance underneath for clamps or U-bolts and wing nuts. Here from our roof to bottom of the crossbar I have it at three inches of clearance and then the height addage to the top of our roof at the top of the crossbar is gonna be four inches of height.
That's where your cargo sits. So if you have skis with extra tall bindings, you make sure there's enough clearance there. If not, you then start looking at accessories that give you more height. This is a pretty average height for roof clearances, will fit most things. I really like how the jet stream crossbars are sleek but also sturdy looking.
So you have this black finish. You can also get a Yakima crossbar in silver. They're gonna work the exact same way. They just have a different look to match your car. Now these crossbars also have T track channels on top so you have clamps that go around or you could get clamps that fit into a T track system, that way you can maximize the length and you can store things all the way over here.
The install is going to be involved, but that is what you're gonna, okay. So it definitely depends on if you want something that's easy to install, but you get less crossbar spread and functionality. Or if you want something that does take more time but you get a longer crossbar spread. So if you are using this frequently and keeping this on your roof, awesome, you'll only have to do it once. If you have to take this on and off your roof, I do recommend something easier to use, but first let's take a look at that install process so that you can exactly see what you're in for.
So installing the Yakima roof rack might look confusing at first because there's a bunch of different hooks, a bunch of different pads and towers and crossbars but I'm gonna guide you through that process. The first thing we're going to do is set up the tower and the crossbar. First, you're going to install these spaces and the block on your crossbar, so this fits into your tower. And in order to secure this metal piece you first need to open the door on this back. So pull that open and that gives you access to this bolt underneath the tower. So turn this with the included tool. So just slightly thread onto that plate. So now that's secure and ready to slide. This plate fits into the track underneath your crossbar. So as long as it's loosely installed you'll be able to slide it through. Do that for all four towers. There are numbers on your crossbar and that will help you figure out where to put your tower. So we're gonna line ours up with 38 and an eighth, which will be right there. And then we're gonna tighten it down. Before tightening down, make sure that you have the crossbar facing the right wave. So at the center of the crossbar make sure the arrow's facing away from you. This is important because then you can angle your tower for a different pitch so where it's angled towards you, centered or away from you. So we need to push us to pitch eighth where the bolt is on the notch, furthest away from you. Holding the tower to the distance set as well as the pitch set, we're then going to tighten down with our tool. Next, you're gonna get your pads. So these already have the plates on them and they just clip into your tower. Make sure that arrow is facing out. To adjust for the next setting, which is the toe, you're gonna rotate those pads on the tower and that moves the toe back and forth. We're going to set this to number two, which is the center and then we're going to tighten that down. It's ideal to use the Yakima tool so pretty much all the bolts are tightening down because this has a torque setting. Once you reach the proper tension it will click all right there and prevent you from tightening it down too much. So with all the pads on the towers, the next step then is to put the crossbar on the roof. But where do you put it Well, you do have some measurements. For the first measurement for the front crossbar, it's measured from the windshield to 12 inches back on the roof. Once you find your spot, you can then use one of the stickers included with your kit to make a mark. Then you can gently place your crossbar onto your roof. Make sure you have that rubber pad on the bottom so you don't accidentally scratch anything up. Line it up with your mark. Now place your second crossbar 32 inches away from your first crossbar. All these measurements are measured at the leading edge of the tower. Now you're going to move the bolts. You have the swing bolt, you have the drive bolt. With these loose, you can then place your hook into the drive bolt. It doesn't click, but it just stays in there. And if you can't pull it out, you know it's in there. Now we're going to adjust the swing to where we have a good angle and then we're gonna tighten down the swing. Opening up the door, you now have access to two bolts. There's the swing bolt, there's the drive bolt. So we're going to get a hook and we're gonna push it underneath that drive bolt just enough where it catches and you can no longer pull it out. What I like to do now is to tighten down this drive bolt just enough where we have the bottom of the clamp lined up with the bottom of your door. Don't worry about tightening it too much though. Just get in place. With this in place but still loose, we're then going to tighten down the swing bolt. With any of these bolts, when you do tighten them down, do it evenly, like halfway on one side, go to the other side, tighten that down halfway, just go back and forth so you're not pulling the whole system one way to the other. Evenly tighten down the drive bolt next. Final step is to put the end caps on. There's an end cap for the crossbar as well as an end cap for the tower. You come from the bottom, pivot up and it clicks into place. And if you have the Yakima same key system lock cores, this is when you would switch them out. Double check that all your towers and crossbars are sturdily on your roof but that's it for the install. It might seem confusing at first but it's actually pretty straight to the point once you know what you're doing. You're not ready to load up your roof rack and hit the road. And that right there was a look at the Yakima roof rack system with the jet stream crossbars that are 50 inches long, the baseline towers for naked roofs, as well as the custom fit kit for your 2021 Nissan Rogue.

These crossbars combine the strength of steel with an aerodynamic shape to create a heavy-duty yet quiet roof rack for your vehicle. Full-length bars maximize cargo carrying capacity and work with most clamp-on accessories.I purchased clips that were stated as being compatible with our 2010 Chevrolet Impala. The front clips fit well, however the rear clips do not.
Excellent solution for my 2023 Chevy Silverado. In the past, I have had rails installed on the roof of my pickup trucks, but I find the BaseLine towers to be a better solution, since they don't permanently change the truck. Plus, they are much more solid than SkyLine system on the rails.
Follow the instructions, and you can't go wrong on the self installation
I've just recently installed this setup on my 2015 Toyota Camry.
etrailer - Shopping for this rack was fairly simple, and the shipping from etrailer was quick and reliable. I received the rack in 2 different shipments but they both arrived at the same time. etrailer made sure the all the contents were available. They also have several resourceful videos on their YouTube page, which was helpful while shopping for the rack and during a few trouble shooting items while I was installing.
Yakima Core Bar - Overall a quality product. Everything necessary was supplied, including a handy measuring tape and some very well written instructions. The fit is clean and very sturdy. The only qualm I have is that the hex hole in the large anchor bolts are a bit larger than the supplied hex driver. Toward the end of the installation, the tool was worn and ended up turning inside the bolt itself (not due to over torquing whatsoever). I ended up having to use a hex set I had in my toolbox to complete the installation because the provided tool was starting to strip out the anchor bolt. With that said, the kit is still a great kit that meets my expectations.
Wind noise is quieter than my OEM VW bars on my 2017 Volkswagen GTI. It's noticeable, but nothing extreme - I believe that's just the price you pay when adding crossbars to a vehicle.
Verdict - etrailer has definitely met my expectations, and the Yakima kit provided is a well designed kit that fits well!
From start to finish, the folks at etrailer -- and I spoke to several people there, so it was a consistent corporate vibe -- were fantastic to deal with.
There were delays in getting my product that were on the supplier side and out of etrailer's control, yet etrailer folks kept me up to date and also worked on a customized solution.
My goal was to be able to carry my surfboard on the roof of our 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe to the beach more than 3 hours away. But the particular model we had had no existing racks, no recessed areas, nothing to fix racks to. Not even the dealer had a solution. I was sh*t out of luck.
But etrailer hooked me up. The racks did take me a while to put on, but most of that time was fine tuning to reduce “hum” while driving. I’m very happy with them.
Thanks to etrailer, I have gone surfing and can go surfing whenever I'd like to.
Really easy to install & work as specified. So happy with the customer support/service at etrailer.
Five-star seller. High quality products, fast shipping. Thank you for a pleasant buying experience.
Love my Yakima roof rack!! It exceeds my expectations.great product. Also thank etrailer for the tec support! great staff always there to help thanks again!!
As described! Quick delivery!
Ackage came 2 days early the install was somewhat easy (did it by myself)
Did not get to mount anything to it but seems really sturdy. One thing I can say is mark out your mounting points with provided stickers then put up and make adjustments to the roof rack.
Great product great service
Very good product. The Yakama towers and cross bars feel very solid and appears to be high quality. Very easy install. Others have complained about the instructions, but guess I'm a visual person because the pictures all seemed very clear to me and the install was very easy. They do sit higher than I expected. After adding a Rhino Rack cargo basket, we only have about 4-5" clearance below the garage door.
Solid build quality and easy installation on my '21 Mazda CX-5.
So far so good. Purchased these towers to use on a 2022 GMC Canyon with HD bars that I already had, primarily to carry my canoe. Yakima's fitting instructions worked perfectly and the whole system seems really solid.
Well packaged and on time
These were very difficult to find to fit my Prius C. It took awhile to get them but I am very happy with the fit.
These crossbars feel like they are well made and sturdy. It took less than 30 minutes to install with the Ridgeline Towers. I love the look of the bars! Can't wait to load the Kayaks up and get out on the water.
Should include extra end caps just in case they fall off.
Roof rack fits and works as advertised. Over the phone customer support for sales and install directions were very helpful and thorough. Geoff is an excellent brand ambassador who goes above and beyond to fulfill customer expectations. I will definitely be shopping at etrailer for my future vehicle needs. Well done!
Your notice of schemes was a lot better than the yakima site provided. They did not suggest the scheme you did.
But when the products arrived, the instructions were by yakima. Generally worked as instructed except the tower to tower transverse mounting dimensions needed to be tweaked for a perfect fit.
Timely delivery of my order, as usual! Easy to install on my 2015 4Runner. After I had the mounts ready and put on both bars, I installed the front one and fine-tuned it, the second took even less time then. I now have the ability to carry up to 3 kayaks, perfect! etrailer is a great company!
Very sturdy, well made. The assembly instructions are not too good but if you call Yakima they will provide additional instructions.
My experience with etrailer has been excellent. There was going to be a potential delay in one of the products, but their customer service promptly informed me, half the price of some of their competitors so can't really complain. In the end they got the part ahead of schedule and was able to ship in a timely manner. I will definitely keep them in mind for future purchases.
Well you asked for it so;
I ordered this as part of my roof rack for a 2021 Nissan rogue. The complete roof rack set was unavailable le as one bracket was on back order and said would ship in under a month so I ordered everything else in the meantime. Little did I know it would take a over a year to get one stupid bracket and yes, I'm still waiting. I can't even return the items I bought because it's way past the 90 day policy even though they're brand new still in the box collecting dust. etrailer, this has been the worst experience I've had yet with you guys. Oh still waiting for my one bracket to complete my roof rack
Customer service was excellent, they called me to tell me one item was backordered and how long it would be. Package was shipped with enough packing material. Install was pretty easy, some of the Yakima measurements in the manual are a couple inches off but no big deal. This will be used to carry a box for when the family takes trips. Can pile all the luggage up top and have more room in the car. I would recommend the Yakima corebar roof rack and etrailer! Their price was lower than 2 other sites I checked.
