Enjoy the versatility of a wheel mount without breaking the bank by opting for the Yakima Raptor Aero. This roof-mounted bike carrier promotes a wide range of fits, installs easily and works with most crossbar systems - all for a price well below comparable wheel mounts.

bike mounted on carrier

The wheel-mount design of the Raptor Aero allows you to load your bike in seconds without removing the front tire, saving time and hassle when compared with fork-mount carriers.

vertical armvertical arm on bike

Raptor Aero features an adjustable, vertical arm that cradles your bike's downtube. The jaws positioned at the end of the arm adjust with the turn of an SKS-lockable knob to secure the bike to the carrier. The Raptor fits most bikes with downtubes from 1" to 3". Carrier accepts bikes with non-round downtubes, provided that they are no larger than 3" in any direction, and easily accommodates disc brakes, thru axles and non-traditional suspensions.

The Raptor Aero wheel trays accept most tires 20" and larger, holding them in place with ratcheting straps. Straps slide along wheel tray to accommodate bikes of various lengths.

crossbar mount with hex key knobcrossbar mount with Accessory Lock Housing installed

You can lock the wheel tray to your crossbars by replacing the knobs on the bottom of the mounting brackets with up to three Yakima Accessory Lock Housings (Y07220), which require the purchase of additional SKS Cores.

rear Mighty Mounts

The carrier mounts to round, square, and most factory crossbars when used with included Universal MightyMounts.

Raptor Aero installs with no tools and folds flat against roof rack when not in use, reducing wind resistance.

Video Transcript for Yakima Raptor Aero Frame Mount Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Yakima Raptor aero roof-mounted bike rack, part number Y02093. The Yakima Raptor is designed to clamp around the down tube of the bike. Not recommended for composite frames. There's a nice pad here, which this clamp will again tighten around the down tube of the bike and the pad will protect your bike's finish. On the nob here, you can see this black cover, that can be pulled out and a Yakima key core can be replaced in there to lock this clamp tightly against your bike frame and prevent anyone from loosening up the nob and taking your bike off. Now the Yakima Raptor has these two ratcheting straps, one on the back and then one also on the front that grab around both of the tires. A convenience factor of this is that you don't have to take off the front tire in order to load up your bike, since it attaches to the down tube. You'll just lift up on this lever here and the strap will ratchet tight against the rim of your bike.

The ratcheting straps at the front and back of the bike rack can be moved up and down the tray to accommodate different bike lengths. The jaws of the bike rack can accommodate tubes up to three inches in diameter. Again, this bike rack is not intended for bikes with composite frames. It holds any tire, 20 inches and larger, and accommodates bikes with disc brakes, through axles, or nontraditional suspensions. The Yakima Raptor requires no tools for installation. They simply install by these thumb wheels here, that can easily be loosened and tightened for easy on and off installation of your bike rack.

The clamps also do adjust to two different sizes and two different size clamps also come with the bike rack. You can see these slots here on the back of the bracket. The bottom bracket can be adjusted to accommodate different cross bar widths. The Yakima Raptor has a carrying capacity of one bike, with a weight capacity of 35 pounds, and comes with a life-time warranty. Now we'll go ahead and show you how to load up a bike. We'll first go ahead and push in the red buttons here on the straps and pull it out, then we'll go ahead and loosen up the red knob, which is going to open up the frame clamp.

Then we'll go ahead and place our bike up onto our bike rack making sure the tires go into the tray. Now when you're bringing up the frame hook around the down tube of the frame, you want to be careful to make sure that the pedals and sprocket aren't in the way, may be difficult to kind of maneuver around, just make sure you get a good grip on the bike when you're maneuvering it around so it doesn't fall. Then with the frame clamp on the down tube, we'll just go ahead and turn the red knob, which is going to pinch the claws together. Then we'll go ahead and secure the front and back tire with the straps. We'll Insert the ratcheting strap into the notches, then use the red tab to secure it. No we'll go ahead and show you how to install it.

Now there are two ways to install the bike rack onto your vehicle's cross bars. Included with the bike rack are the brackets, which are used for round bars or square bars. How you install these, is you will take this carriage bolt, which is going to slide in the bottom of the bike rack. You'll put this around the bar, slide the gold bolt through, and you'll just secure with a wing nut on the bottom. Now for today's demonstration we have the brackets assembled onto our bike rack that are mainly used for elliptical and aero bars, but they can also be used for round bars as well. To begin our installation, we'll simply need to screw off the thumb wheels and then we'll just go ahead and bring the brackets around our cross bars. Slide this down. Now there are two setting on these brackets. You can see here and here. This is going to allow you to accommodate different cross bar thicknesses. Since the round bars are kind of thin, we'll put them on the upper one to be able to get a nice hold with our brackets. Then we'll go ahead and place the bike rack on the bar, swing the brackets around, put that gold bolt into the holes of the brackets, then we'll thread on our thumb wheel. Then we'll go ahead and we'll just tighten them down loosely, that way we can adjust the bike rack rear bracket to fit around the rear bar. Go ahead and slide this down to accommodate the thickness of our cross bar spread, then we'll bring the bracket around and secure it. Then we'll just go ahead and fully tighten them down. Now with our bike all loaded up, that will complete today's review of the Yakima Raptor aero roof-mounted bike rack, part number Y02093. .

Re-Engineer! I found this rack not fitting my expectations. The mounting provisions needed for my Xterra were sufficient and the installation overall wasn't too painful. The problem didn't exist until I had the bike mounted and headed off for a quick drive to ride in the hills. Midway to my destination, I was curious how the bike was doing on top (never had this style of rack before). So, I pulled over to see if the bike was staying solid up there. Much to my surprise, the bike was severely listing to one side. I re-examined all the provision and the jaw clamp to see if it was too loose. Nope, the jaw was tight. I readjusted the bike in the upright position and tighened it even more, to ensure it was keeping the bike in place. Headed off again, just a few miles down the road, which did have some modest turns along the way. Once again, I stopped to see if the bike was doing well. And there the bike was......listing to the side again. Bear in mind, this is a large frame Quintana Roo Lucero. The wheel sets are 700's and nothing unusual about its overall dimensions. Tried this "stop and go" check for the next 40 miles. Much to my displeasure, I kept finding the bike listing from one side or the other. From that point on, I never used the bike rake again. Since then, I have gone to a hitch rack and have been pleased with it ever since. And, yes, its a Yakama. 2807

I have same problem with my racks early on but it was fixed when I adjusted the rear wheel holder attached to the crossbar to correct the vertical position of the bikes. To do this you need to slide the rear clamp Without the bike more to the nearest side of your vehicle depending on where you install your rack. If it is on the driver side, move the rear clamp attached to the cross bar nearest to the driver side until you find the Frame Holder standing on to almost vertical position. Just experiment on to this procedure till you find the best position for your bike to stand vertically. I will make a youtube video soon.

Bear in mind that your roof is curved, and presumably so are your cross bars. So unless the tray is mounted dead-center, it will appear to list as its perpedicular to the roof. Otherwise, something is not tight enough, and perhaps your Mightymounts are the culprit.

Yakima makes great products, and this roofrack is no exception. Very pleased. Was quite easy to install and use. But, don’t forget that the bike is up there...done that. Not pretty, but it was easy to get a new piece for the rack. 444971

  • Roof Mounted Bike Rack Compatibility with 16 Inch Wheel of Child - Kid Bike
  • The forks on a 16 inch kids bike will not work with the Yakima ForkLift Roof Mounted Bike Carrier - Fork Mount # Y02098 unless it has a 100 mm dimension between the forks where the wheel attaches. This is the standard fork measurement for the fork mounted bike rack skewer compatibility. My contact at Yakima also recommend the Highspeed # Y02115 if your kid bike has that 100 mm measurement. Due to the small size, you may be better off with a frame mounted option like the Yakima Raptor...
