License Plate Holder for Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack

Updated 01/17/2026 | Published 01/15/2026

Question:

Hi, I have aThule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack. Im lazy and I leave the rack in the hitch, folded up, and it covers the license plate on the back of my Subaru Outback. I want to mount the license plate to the bike rack. Ive heard Thule has such a license plate holder, but the reviews for it are mixed, saying it doesnt mount well to the T2 Pro XTR. What plate holders do you suggest?

Hey Jason! There is a license plate holder for your Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH83JV. What you need is the Thule License Plate Holder for Bike Racks - Lighted # TH35JV. This will strap onto your bike rack when it is folded up so the plate is visible. It also includes a light which is powered via a 4-way connection.

Do you have a 4-way on your Outback? If you don't, I would be happy to help you find one if you can tell me the year of the vehicle.

Thanks Robin. I viewed the product page for the # TH35JV License Plate Holder and there doesn't seem to be any photos of the license plate holder attached to a rack. And I couldn't find any information about how the license plate would remain visible when the Thule XT folding hitch rack is folded up versus when it is unfolded down - it seems like if I mount it to the rack such that it is perpendicular to the ground when the rack is folded up (when not carrying bikes), then when I unfold it back down to carry a bike, the license plate would then be parallel to (facing) the ground, and not at all visible, which is required by law here in California. Am I missing something? I don't see anything on the product page that addresses this. Using this plate holder, will the rear license plate - mounted to the Thule XT hitch rack - always be visible, whether the XT folding rack is up or down? How does that work?

@JasonR well, you could probably leave the straps looser and let it swing on the tray so it is visible whether folded or in use. However, I don't know how much slack you'll have to do that. I would keep it tight on the rack and just move/adjust the straps depending on the position the bike rack is in. What I'm saying is you will have to move it each time so it is facing out and visible. There aren't a lot of pictures or accounts I've seen on the T2 Pro XTR and, we haven't tested one yest, but these universal plate holders are all about the same with some kind of straps like these. If you're really going to be moving it around a lot with folding and unfolding and it becomes a major pain you could swap out the straps for some that are easier to release and adjust.
