Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?

Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Brophy Mounting Bracket

The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 18-1/4" wide and 1" tall.

If it turns out you have more space beneath your doorway, there are larger step assemblies available with 24" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.

Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Brophy Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

31" - 40"AS04, SS04AS24
40" - 48"AS05AS25

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Find the mounting spot for the bracket on your vehicle
  2. Unfold the steps and attach to the mounting bracket "V" clamps
  3. Place step assembly against camper or bumper

-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway

  4. Mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill
  5. Remove steps from bracket and set aside
  6. Attach the mounting bracket to the camper

-Secure in place with included lag screws

  7. Hook stairs into mounting bracket "V" clamps and extend

We installed our steps today, they were easy to install, look good, and are sturdy. The problem we found there is a 6 inch gap between the steps and the camper. Our 10 yr. old granddaughter, immediately fell into that gap. (See attached pictures) we are going to create a transition between steps and camper. This should fix the problem. Thank you

Customer service was informative and helpful! I have received my order in a week. Product was what I was looking for. 4 star service.

I was a bit skeptical the steps would be somewhat flimsy and maybe a little scary to use ( I'm a heavier than I should be guy)..but I am very pleased with how well they work and stable they are. Add that to the fact that etrailer has had everything I've ordered in stock and to my door almost unbelievably quickly... I'm a very satisfied customer.

To anyone needing a set of high quality, very sturdy steps for any application, these Brophy steps are the ones to buy! They are as tough as nails; fasten down securely, and fold up compactly to store out of the way. And the price cannot be beat! Thanks again etrailer and Brophy for making these great steps available! Sincerely, Garrett E. from Bend, Oregon.

Great idea for keeping the steps on the rear of my toyhauler out from under the camper where they have been dragged numerous times on odd driveway turns. These are basic steps, easy to hang, and then remove and stow before getting underway.

- SS02

We love this product. Super easy to install and where we go with our trailer if the steps didn't come off we would most likely tear them off. They fold right up and we just put in the back of the truck.

- SS02

Super easy to install the bracket. Steps scissor down and are perfectly spaced for easy ups and downs.

Nice affordable product with simple installation instructions. Installed quickly and works very well. Easily support 300lbs.

Review from a similar Steel Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

Here’s my review of the removable folding steps I’m bought installed on my old truck. Now I’m an older person that really likes to go camping/fishing at 1-2 weeks at a time, needed some easier way to get me in my camper that’s over 30 inches from the ground that is stable and safe. These folding stairs worked out great for me and are easy enough to remove and store when not used. This unit came with all hard ware needed to install, and directions on how to do the job at task. Very well-built unit, very strong too. My chose to leave my tailgate on my truck worked out great for me. Very happy with the fast shipping and quality of this unit and would remind to others as well. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for…! They get this old man in and out of my camper safely and stable to. Hope this helps others…!

Review from a similar Steel Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR! I own a tri-level home and when needing to repair or upgrade light fixtures or most things involving the ceiling I have found that it is much easier to go above and work from the top which means the attic. Because of the third level of the house, my attic also has another level to reach it and it doesn't have stairs to get up to it resulting in having to use a chair or step ladder which I found to be very unsteady (and scary). Similar products like this cost upwards of $500 and they were fixed sets meaning that they didn't fold or contract for space saving. This is perfect for what I needed. As you can see in the photos I have it mounted on the wall and collapsed when not in use. When needed it is very easy to just grab the bottom rail and pull it down to expand the steps and push it back up when done. THANK YOU eTrailer!

Review from a similar Steel Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

Super easy to install, very sturdy. Installed this on rear of our 2005 Palomino Maverick 1000 truck camper. Makes entry very easy. The camper did not come with steps so this was a great way to get inside the camper. I added an eyebolt to the back of the camper to attach the step to the camper with a chain to keep honest people honest. The only drawback is the weight, not excessive but the aluminum ones might be easier to manipulate. Great product, would eagerly advise someone to buy this unit.

The step works as it should. However, it is heavy and opens and closes on the stiff side. If you can afford it, buy the aluminum steps.

Review from a similar Steel Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

I installed steel 4 step scissor steps on my popup truck camper. The camper door would not clear the steps. I needed to mount the steps lower. A couple pieces of slotted angle iron did the trick. See attached photos. P.S. You could even use the slotted angle to lock the steps in case you thought someone might want to "borrow" them.

Ask the Experts about this Brophy RV and Camper Steps

  • Can I Use the Brophy Scissor Step on a Class C RV
You could probably make the Brophy # SS02 work on your Class C as long as there is something secure to mount them to right below the coach's entry. These Brophy steps are typically used on truck bed campers that have limited space available for steps to be mounted, so if you've got something similar then you can make this work, but there are likely better solutions. • Dimension Between Steps of the Brophy Step SS02
I spoke to my contact at Brophy and he informed me that from the top of the top step down to the top of the bottom step the steps measure 7 inches. From the ground to the top step it will measure exactly 3 inches from the total height. Since this step has a range of 18 to 23 inches in total height you would just need to subtract 3 inches and you would have the dimension you are looking for.

  • What is the Retracted Height of the Brophy Scissor Steps # SS02
I spoke with my contact at Brophy about scissor steps # SS02. The retracted height is approximately 10 inches when installed. When extended, the height is 24 to 31 inches. These steps are designed as a universal fit item so they will most likely not fit the factory step mount and you will need to drill to mount them.
