Will Flexco Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The Flexco pull-out steps from Stromberg Carlson are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Mounting Bracket Stromberg

The Lippert pull-out steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 26" wide and 12" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 21-1/16" wide to 28-1/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Entry Height Stromberg

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 3" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom steps to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket width measurements in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Mounting Bracket Width Entry Height Part Number
21-1/16" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1120
23-5/8" 19" - 22" SMFP-2120
24-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1220
25" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1100
26" 19" - 22" SMFP-2100
27-1/8" 30" - 33" SMFP-3200L
28-1/8" 26" - 29" SMFP-3100
28-1/8" 34" - 37" SMFP-4400
28-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1200

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with carriage bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware tight

  • Replacement Steps for a 2018 Forest River Rockwood Roo 21DK
Hey Terry, thanks for reaching out! The closest thing we have to what you described is the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps for RVs # SMFP-2100. There are some slight differences in the bracket width, step width, and step height though so it won't be an exact match and you might need to adjust your mounting brackets. You might also consider upgrading to a fold-down step system like the Lippert SolidStep RV Steps for 25" - 28-7/8" Wide Doorways # LC733931 which has adjustable legs to fit...

  • Replacement Double Step Recommendation for Coleman 17 ft Camper
At one point the Flexco Steps part # SMFP-2100 that you referenced were listed as having the same width you need of 26-1/8 inches between the mounting brackets. We now know that the dimension is really 27-5/8 inches. Since we don't have a step that matches directly you'll either need to move your current brackets or have new ones installed with the Outriggers part # LC301704. The steps of this kit have an 8 inch rise whitch is pretty standard and would be a great option.

  • Determining The Correct Replacement Pull-Out RV Steps For A 2018 Lance 1995 Travel Trailer
To find the correct fit for your 2018 Lance 1995 travel trailer you'll need to first measure the height from the ground up to the mounting brackets (entry height) and the overall width of the mounting brackets. Once we have these measurements we can then look at the available options and see if there's any with deeper steps. The Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps for RVs # SMFP-2100 has two steps that are 24" wide x 9" deep. They have a mounting bracket width of 26" wide and entry height range...

  • How to Lippert Outriggers Install when Installing New RV Pull Out Steps
We don't have an install picture but what I can do is describe it. The portion of the # LC301704 with the round holes mounts to the bottom of the frame on your trailer with nuts and bolts or welding. They would need to be spaced at the width of your steps. Then the square hole side of the outrigger is used to run the included hardware through to attach to the step.

  • Double Pull Out Step Recommendation for Trailer with 350 lb Capacity and is 24 inches Wide
If you need a double step with a 350 lb capacity you would need to go with the Flexco Step part # SMFP-2100 which is 24 inches wide like you would need. I know this isn't your ideal solution since it requires modifying your mounting location but the single steps and double steps are very different in their mounting locations. You will want the outriggers # LC301704 to mount the steps.

  • Recommended 2-Step Upgrade for 2018 Lance 1475s Trailer
The only possible double step upgrade option we have for a 2018 Lance 1475s is the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps for RVs part # SMFP-2100. It looks like the only dimensions that won't match up is the mounting flange bolt spacing which is larger on this double so you will need to drill a few holes is all. To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when...

The Manual Pull Out Steps part # SMFP-2100 that you mentioned are going to fit your 2011 Palomino Puma 27KFQ only when you use the Lippert Outriggers for Manual RV Steps # LC301704. If you need a smaller step you can use # SMFP-2120 instead. The mounting locations are different, so the outriggers are needed with either option.

  • Dimensions Of Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps For Travel Trailer Two Step
The 26-1/8 inches wide at the top is correct and the mounting holes at 24-1/4 x 7 inches are correct for the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps for RVs # SMFP-2100. The total width of 27-5/8 inches has to do with the end of the Rod that extends out both sides. I've attached pictures to assist with all the measurements.

  • Could the Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps # SMFP-2100 Install on a 1995 Award RV
The Flexco Manual Pull-Out Steps # SMFP-2100 could easily be installed on your RV. It may take some fabrication to get to fit depending on how your current step is set up. But either way this could be made to fit. With this step installed the bottom step would end up only about 5-1/2 inches from the ground so you would not need a handrail stair to use with this but in case you are looking for a hand rail to add to this step you would want the part # AP-101.
