SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock

RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:

Twist-Type Design Problems

  • Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
  • Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
  • Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
  • Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
  • Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly

SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.

Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.

Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Video Transcript for Review of SmartPlug RV Power Cord - 50 Amp 30 Foot Power Cord - SM86FR

Hi there I'm Michael with etrailer.com, today we're going to take a quick look at this smart plug, 50 amp, 30 foot RV power cord. Now this 30 foot power cord is going to allow you to plug your RV into your power receptacle at your campsite. The male plug end here is going to connect to your standard 50 amp outlet on the electrical box. You've got your three straight prongs there and your one rounded prong. Those are all nickel plated brass. So they are going to be great at conducting electricity.

So you get a nice flow coming in from that electrical box on the backside, we do have a 90 degree handle that will fold out so that we can more easily disconnect from our box when it's time to unhook. And then it folds right back up for easy storage. When we plug it into our electrical box on our female end, we are going to have a blue led indicator. That's going to confirm our connection show that we are hooked up properly. And then our female plug is going to connect to your 50 amp smart plug inlet on your RV.

It does have that same shape. So it's going to be very easy to plug in, even in low light or dark situations. It only goes in the one way. So it's very easy to get plugged in and it is the straight prong. So straight on, just plug it in and you're ready to go.

And then you're going to get all of the advantages of the smart plug technology, including the triple weatherproof seals that help prevent any water from getting in there. It's also got the multi locking system so that you're going to have a nice solid connection. Our spring loaded side clips here are a marine grade 316 stainless steel. So they're going to hold up really well and make sure that the plug stays in place so that the pressure is put on the sleeve, not on the pins where it can cause damage to the pins and eventually cause more resistance and heat build up and that sort of thing. So really nice option for those of you who already have a smart plug inlet on your RV, this will plug right in there, give you all those advantages.

This is a black cord. It's got this Valox 553U plastic, which is going to be UV and heat resistant. So it will hold up really well for you for a long time to come. Now, again, this is a 30 foot long cord. It's 50 amps, and it's going to be rated for 125 and 250 volts. So it's going to do a really good job getting that power to your RV so that you can run your appliances and not have to worry about being on a generator or battery power. So that's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com, Thanks for watching..
