Hello Jay,

I’m curious what panel you’re planning to use. How many panels will you be running, and what is the total wattage? I want to make sure the controller I recommended is properly sized for your setup.

Right now, your camper has the Go Power RV SAE Port for Portable Solar Panels – 10 Feet # GP49QR installed, and that wiring typically runs directly to your batteries.

For a portable setup, I recommend something like the Rich Solar Mega 200 Portable Solar Panel with Case – MC4 Connectors – 200 Watts # RS85FR. Since that panel uses MC4 connectors, you would also want the 10AWG Solar Connector to SAE Adapter – Connects Solar Panels to SAE Plugs – IP68 Rated – 30A – 600V # RS39VR so you can plug directly into the side of your RV.

Because charge controllers should be protected from the elements, I recommend mounting the Rich Solar MPPT Solar Charge Controller – 100V DC – 12V and 24V – 20 Amp # RS42FR inside the RV near your batteries. You would disconnect the interior wires from the # GP49QR that currently go to the battery and instead connect those two wires to the controller’s PV (solar input) terminals.

From the controller’s battery output terminals, you would then run new positive and negative cables to your battery bank, such as the Rich Solar Battery Cable – 8-Gauge – 10' Long # RS34VR. The positive lead should have a 30-amp inline fuse installed as close to the battery as possible to properly protect the circuit, you can find one at your local auto store. The negative lead will connect directly to the battery negative or ground bus.

This way, your setup would flow as follows: portable panel outside ~> MC4 to SAE adapter ~> Go Power side port ~> interior wiring ~> MPPT controller ~> fused connection ~> batteries.

This keeps the controller protected inside while still allowing you to plug in and remove the portable panel easily as needed.

Do you plan on using any 120V appliances? What kind of Inverter do you have?

When RVs come prepped with side solar ports, it sounds like it should be plug-and-play, but since they found that the controller needs to be installed inside and not on the potable panel, there is just a little additional wiring involved to do it correctly and safely.

What kind of RV is this on? And what adventures are you looking forward to this year?

Could I have a recommendation for a solar suitcase with a built in controller to plug in to a go power Solar. With at least 200 watts?

The solar on the side for the Lance 1875 TT has a solar compatible SAE plug rated at 20 amp max. Go power. But I need a weather proof charge controller between the panels and the coach or a panel recommendation with a built in change controller. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

@JayW All of our kits would need to have the controller mounted inside. I am not sure why we stopped carrying the Go Power portable panel kits with built in controllers, but if you do a Google search for GP-PSK-200 you should be able to find the 200 watt panel that plugs directly into your port. I am really hoping we bring this part back to our site. Controllers do not tend to hold up well in the elements, so if you are open to installing the controller inside where it will last longer, I would recommend the Rich Solar Mega 200 Portable Solar Panel with Case – MC4 Connectors – 200 Watts # RS85FR. For the controller, you can use the 20 Amp # RS42FR. Sorry we no longer carry the panel with built in controller.
