Can I Use a Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier While Flat Towing My Jeep Behind My Newmar Ventana?

Updated 08/31/2026 | Published 08/21/2026

Question:

Hello, I have a Newmar Ventana and towing a jeep grand cherokee with a blueOX towbar. Now I like to add a small cargo carrier and thinking of the Flint Hill Goods 19 x 53 Cargo Carrier - 2 Hitch - 500 lb Capacity with the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter - 2 Hitch - 4 or Rise - 10,000 lb. The questions are: Will it interfere with the blue when turning? Is the cargo carrier rating to be on an RV? What is you advise ? kind regards

Hello Erald,

Thanks for writing in

Yes, you are on the right track with the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter # RM83SR and the Flint Hill Goods Cargo Carrier # FHG87ZR.

The # RM83SR is made for exactly what you are wanting to do. You can put your Blue Ox tow bar in the lower receiver for your Jeep Grand Cherokee and the cargo carrier in the upper receiver. Your Blue Ox tow bar will have the movement it needs when turning, so you will be just fine there.

The Flint Hill Goods Cargo Carrier # FHG87ZR can also be used on the back of your Class A Newmar Ventana. It is the folding cargo carriers that you have to watch out for with motorhomes. Since this one is fixed, you are good to go.

The only thing you will want to keep an eye on is your weight. The carrier itself is rated for 500 lbs, but you will still need to stay within the tongue weight rating of the # RM83SR and the hitch on your Newmar, whichever is lower.

What are you planning on carrying on the cargo carrier? Sounds like you are getting the Newmar set up for some adventures!

Thank you for the answers. Am planning to carry some outdoor carpet and maybe some outdoor furniture on it. Nothing really heavy. Those carpets and other stuff tend to need quite some room in the bays and always make a mess when wet or when we are in sandy/muddy environment. Am using bags to put things in but they still tend to leak when wet. So the hitch weight will not be much more than a 100 lbs.

We have the dual hitch receiver on a Jayco Greyhawk, tow a Mini Cooper and use the upper receive for a bike rack with 2 e-bike. Works great. Sounds like you have the weight thing figured out but I would just make sure the your Jeep clears the carrier when turning before hitting the road.
