Weigh Safe hitch ball application

This Weigh Safe hitch ball has an easy-to-use, built-in scale that measures your trailer's tongue weight every time you tow. If the scale indicates that your tongue weight is too low or too high, you can adjust it before you head out so that you can complete your journey with peace of mind, knowing that your setup is safe. And towing trailers with different coupler sizes is a breeze thanks to the magnetic, clamp-on 2-5/16" ball adapter.

What is Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent - and should not exceed 15 percent - of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10,000-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components.

Why is Tongue Weight So Important?

Weigh Safe helps ensure proper trailer tongue weight

Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with an improper tongue weight can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or cause your trailer to separate from the vehicle.

Built-In Tongue Weight Scale

The gauge of the Weigh Safe built-in tongue weight scale

The Weigh Safe hitch ball's built-in scale signals you to adjust your load before you hit the road, resulting in a much safer and enjoyable towing experience. Before this hitch ball, gauging your trailer's tongue weight was a hassle. You had to rely on inefficient bathroom scales, make a trip to the weigh station, or purchase a separate tongue weight scale. But with the Weigh Safe ball's built-in scale, measuring your tongue weight is as easy as coupling your trailer to your ball mount. Simply attach the hitch ball to your ball mount and hook up your trailer. The weight of your trailer will push down on the hitch ball, which in turn pushes down on an internal hydraulic piston that sits on a bed of oil. When the piston drops into the oil, the pressure reading is sent out to the scale.

2" and 2-5/16" Hitch Ball Compatibility

A clamp-on adapter is included that increases the diameter of the hitch ball to 2-5/16". The adapter allows you to easily switch hitch ball diameters so that you can tow trailers with different coupler sizes. Both the 2" and 2-5/16" hitch balls are tested and rated at 10,000 lbs GTW with a 1,500-lb TW.

Clamp-on adapter installed on Weigh Safe hitch ball

Adjusting the hitch ball diameter with the clamp-on adapter is fast and easy. Open the adapter by pulling apart each side along the hinge. Then place the adapter over the top of the 2" ball and clamp it shut. Magnets inside the adapter will keep it in place. To remove, simply pull the sides apart and lift it off of the ball.

Simple Installation

Installation of Weigh Safe hitch ball

Installing the Weigh Safe hitch ball is simple. Insert the shank of the hitch ball through the hole in your ball mount and thread on the included lock washer. Next attach the female fastening nut, which includes the scale, to the hitch ball shank. Then tighten down the female fastening nut.

Superior Stainless Steel Construction

This Weigh Safe hitch ball is constructed of solid stainless steel offering far greater protection against rust and corrosion than standard steel hitch balls that are only painted or plated on the surface. The stainless steel shank is heat treated to increase its overall toughness, shear strength, and tensile strength so that you can safely tow up to 10,000 lbs.

The Weigh Safe hitch ball meets VESC V-5 regulations and is SAE J684 certified. These regulatory bodies - the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission and the Society for Automotive Engineers - create standards for the design, construction, and performance of automotive and towing accessories. Weigh Safe has had this hitch ball thoroughly tested in simulation to ensure that it complies with these standards. The result is a strong, safe, sturdy product that is built to last.

Video Transcript for Weigh Safe Hitch Ball with Built-In Scale Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Weigh Safe Universal 2 inch and 2 5/16 Hitch Ball with Built-In Scale. This offers stainless steel construction and a gross trailer weight rating at 10,000 pounds. The Weigh Safe Universal Ball Mount's going to give us the perfect solution for getting ideal tongue weight. When we have the right tongue weight we're going to reduce any sway situations we might have, and also we're going to reduce wear and tear on our trailer and our truck. Now here you'll see on our scale the register. It's up at about 700 pounds now. Now, for round numbers we're going to say our trailer only weighs 3,000 pounds, so we're well over and above the ideal target range.

Where we would want to be with a 3,000 pound trailer we be 10 to 15%, which would be 300 to 450 pounds. Now, there are several negative affects to having too much tongue weight. Basically, we're going to be putting more pressure on the front axle and front tires of our trailer, which is going to cause premature wear on those suspension and tire components. Also, on our truck having too much tongue weight causes the rear suspension to take more force than it really needs to to haul your load. That again, it's going to cause premature wear here in the rear end. A few side effects of putting too much weight on the rear end are that the front end is actually going to come up a little bit.

Now, when that happens the pressure pushing down on our front tires is going to be reduced. That negatively affects your handling, your steering, and your braking, which isn't a very safe way to go down the road, especially when hauling trailers. Also, as that weight comes off the front tires the angle of the suspension geometry is going to change, and that can cause excess wear. Now, the reverse of that is having too little tongue weight. You'll see we've moved our UTV back, reducing the tongue weight on our trailer. Now the opposite affect is occurring here in our tandem axle trailer.

We're going to have excessive weight on the rear suspension, so these components, again, are going to wear more quickly than the front components. Now, another situation that arises with too little tongue weight, and I think it's probably one of the most dangerous ones that we're going to encounter with tongue weight period, is too little tongue weight typically causes sway in your trailer. What that means is, without the tongue weight pressing downward and keeping our trailer stable, it'll start going side to side. I've had events myself when I didn't have my trailer loaded properly. Once that trailer starts moving, it's very hard to get it under control. Before we ever leave the house, we can get our tongue weight dialed in exactly where it needs to be, and know that as we travel we'll be able to do that safely. Now here's a good look at our trailer and truck properly loaded.

As you can see, our trailer has a more level stance. We're evenly distributing the weight across the suspension system rather than relying on one to take the brunt of it. Also, take a look at the truck. It's much more level. We have less pressure down on the rear, going to reduce some of that wear and tear on the suspension, and also return our handling, braking and things like that to the front of the truck. Now, let's take a look at how easy it is to use the Weigh Safe Ball Mount to attain that tongue weight. Now, the Weigh Safe Ball is going to make it extremely easy to get that tongue weight we need. Basically, on your trailer you just need to shift your load forward or back, and make sure that you get to that 10 to 15% target range. As we begin to bring this forward, we're increasing the amount of weight going down on our tongue. We just want to check it out, and when we get to that 300 to 450 mark we'll know we'll be in good shape. Now you'll see as we bring this forward, we'll see the load weight register there on the scale. Once we've achieved our target weight we'll be able to secure our load and be very confident heading down the road knowing we're going to do it safely. Now, the Weigh Safe ball Mount, as we talked about, is 2 and 2 5/16 inch compliant. As you can see, we've got the nice stainless steel magnetic cover that goes around, has a very nice and snug fit. As we bring our other coupler down and on, we're not going to have to worry about any slack or any play. Now, it's going to work the same both ways, our scale's going to work no matter what ball we choose. Essentially what happens to make this work is a transfer bar inside pushes down on the scale. As our coupler comes down on top and as it increases the weight, that transfer bar comes down, and then that's going to register on our scale. Now, the unit itself doesn't take up a whole lot more room than what a 2 inch ball does. The diameter here is 2 inches, and from the outside edge of your ball mount to the outside edge of the scale, it's only going to be about 3/4 of an inch. All in told from top to bottom with the 2 inch ball, we've got 5 7/8 of an inch. With the adapter installed, we add an 1/8 of an inch, bringing it to a total of 6 inches top to bottom. Now, the compact design is going to allow us to use this almost universally in all kinds of situations. Not going to have to worry about clearances or anything and it's going to make towing a lot easier. Now, the Weigh Safe Universal Ball is going to work out really well for just about any style of 3/4 inch thick ball mount platform that offers the 1 inch hole, whether it's an adjustable or a fixed ball mount, those are the only two requirements we have to meet. It has to be 3/4 of an inch thick and it has to have a 1 inch hole. Other than that, there are really no limitations to where we can put this. Now, they've used very high quality materials in the construction here. What we're going to have is a complete stainless steel ball. Not going to have any other materials in there at all, and even in the shank portion they went a step further, had that heat treated so we're going to have superior strength and reliability and the material's not going to corrode over time. Now here at the top of the 2 inch ball we're going to have a small hex head set screw. They've given us a provided Allen key, and this is our initial setup. This is something we only have to perform one time. What we'll do is keep an eye on the scale, and while holding the ball we turn that set screw. Now, we'll feel some pressure initially, then we'll continue to go until we have our scale at about 100 pounds. Once it's there we just want to gently back off on that set screw, keeping an eye on the dial to see when that arrow quits moving. Once it stops, which you can see about right there it's not moving anymore, then we'll know that we've got that properly set and you shouldn't have really any play in the ball itself. It is going to rotate, but you shouldn't be able to move it up and down at all when properly set. Let's take just a second to see how the 2 5/16 inch coupler's going to work. As we said before, that's going to go over and we just need to lower the trailer down and on. Now, something to keep in mind whether you're using the 2 inch or 2 5/16 inch, the ball's going to have a 10,000 pound gross trailer weight rating and a 1,500 pound tongue weight rating. As you can see, that's going to slide down there very nicely. Pin it up, and regardless whether it's a 2 inch or 2 5/16, very easy to couple. That's going to complete our look at the Weigh Safe Hitch Ball with Built-In Scale, part number WSUN-1.

I purchased one of the first 'off the line' and was truly impressed, as the other reviewer stated, how the material and quality of workmanship stood out. I had great expectations....however.....in practice, the Weigh Safe mount with the built in scale didn't pan out. At hook up, it read my tongue weight perfectly. I do not recommend it's use with weight distribution hook ups including those with anti-sway. I have a Reese system that uses the trunnion design and a friction anti-sway.....which crushed the dial base and destroyed everything but the ball itself during a turn. This caveat to not use with W/D is now on the etrailer.com site where the experts answer questions, but I am dissapointed that the manufacturer didn'ttake the responsibility to have this in their marketing of the product up front. My recommendation for those with a W/D hitch purchase the separate tongue weight scale. 396542

The weigh safe hitch I ordered was well made however from day one the scale never worked, I was very disappointed because it was a great looking hitch. Sorry to tell you this but very unsatisfied. 585512

The ball with built-in scale works perfectly and consistently allows me to load my car trailer with the correct tongue weight. Too much or too little and I reposition the car on the trailer. I highly recommend this product. 485148

Since I ordered this (on sale) in November but wouldn't actually need it until April (camping season for us), I went ahead and set it up for a trial run. Set up was a little challenging for me because this requires 2 wrenches at 1.5 inch size. My largest crescent wrench isn't even that big, so I had to use channel locks. Not ideal, but it got the job done. I hooked my travel trailer up and the tongue weight registered 350 lbs, which is about right (no propane tanks or battery, as it it winterized right now). Next, I stood on top of the tongue and it added 200 lbs, which is also about right. So, I'll go ahead a call this device as good as advertised. I'm really looking forward to NOT using the scale and 10 ft bar technique to get my tongue weight in the future. Tongue weight is very important to me as we bring our trailer on cross-country trips over multiple mountain ranges most years. I plan on storing this in my garage for the winter along with my other hydraulic items to prevent any seals from failing prematurely due to excessive exposure to the cold. (NOTE: while the product says it can handle 10k lbs tongue weight, I could not find a ball mount that meets the requisite 3/4 inch thick platform and 1 inch hole diameter that handles any greater than 7500lbs - so the ball mount limits my capacity with this. I use weight distribution to haul my 6500 lb travel trailer (loaded weight), but this will work as a back-up in an emergency if my distro hitch fails for some reason) 586572

High quality product and very innovative making it possible to know for certain what your trailer tongue weight is! Your website for ordering is the best I have seen making it very easy for us “non-nerd” types to place an order and it came very quickly. Thanks - I am a repeat customer. 649347

A must have in determining load distributions of various implements on various trailers! I use it only to calculate load positions once- then tow with conventional ball/hitch to minimize wear and tear on this instrument. 615671

Best way to go for real time convenient tongue weight measurement. Used to tow RV trailer using clamshell for larger tow ball size. Instructions very clear on setting “0” on the scale. Accurate to within 50 lbs. Need to check/adjust set screw for “0” prior to every tow as set screw does loosen after about 10 tows, but adjusting “0” very easy so minor inconvenience in exchange for knowing tongue weight which is a critical piece of information in setting up your rig for towing. 595253

1yr later and 40+ RV tow trips later this product is performing flawlessly. Real time tongue weight is perfect for verifying tow hitch set up is within specs every time, all the time.

The ordering process was so easy and the "shopping" was very descriptive and accurate once it arrived. It arrived in perfect time, just like they said it would and the agents at etrailer were excellent at keeping me abreast of the items and their arrival at my home. 518073

We use this scale to check out tongue weight before each trip with our camping trailer. We only use it to check tongue weight —not for towing. This ball works best for heavier tongue weights where you can use more of the scale’s indicator range—it starts at around 400 pounds and goes up to about 1200. We shoot for around 450 pounds so we are just able to register a reading which is not in the region where a highly accurate reading can be obtained. 497899

I just received my Weigh-safe universal tow ball, (extremely fast delivery) and (thought I had a problem) with it. I learned after I called etrailer that operator error must have been an issue, because it was working as advertised when I checked it again. What can I say? . Of significance was E Trailer's response (by Sheila). "We'll fix the issue right away", she said. The problem was obviously me because when I checked again there was no problem. Excellent customer service. 497503

- WSUN-1

There is always the question of how accurate it is. Not that experienced with it yet. Great quality in the materials used make the hitch. 491095

- WSUN-1

The idea is great but poorly executed. It works but every time I tow with it it loses calibration and I have to re-adjust for next time. I don’t tow a lot of loads where my tongue weight is that critical so I just deal with it and re-adjust/calibrate when I need it. 484996

- WSUN-1

I would have given it 5 stars; however, I don't like the fact that the 2 5/16 ball converter clamps over the 2" ball. It's held in place with magnets and can be easily lost or stolen if it's left on without a trailer hooked up. Other than that, it seems like an accurate scale. I only use the hitch to measure tongue weight. I don't usually tow with it because I'm concerns about environmental conditions ruining the gauge. 473724

This product does what it says! It really has been a big help when towing. I would definitely recommend it. 470333

This was the right purchase for me in finding out the trailer tonque weight. Very simple and easy to use. 470131

This is a great invention. It provides a tongue weight for accurate towing. Very high quality. 400825
