Adam So we got a problem. I want to use this bike rack, but I can't even get it in there to put the hitch pin in because it gets so close to the bumper. So we do have a solution. All I need is an extender. So this one is the Brophy extender and this is going to solve our problem. It installs like any other accessory that you put in your hitch before.
So let's take this rack out. And this thing is about a foot long from end to end. But from the center of the hitch pin hole to the other hitch pin hole, it's going to be about 10 inches. So we're getting 10 inches of extension. It does not come with a hitch pin.
So you will have to get one yourself. We got a lot here at etrailer. It is not a hollow shank, solid. So we're not going to be able to put a anti-rattle device that threads in there, but we do have some that's kind of like a collar, that'll kind of help with that rattling. But if you do get a hitch pin, you need to get one that locks into place.
Why Well, most bike racks that you're going to be using are going to have a lock. So we have the Swagman Current on there right now, which has a lock right here. But if we lock the bike rack to the extension, obviously they can just pull the switch pin out and take the extension with it. So we want to protect our extension and the bike rack. So definitely get a hitch pin that locks in, but now that that's there, we can put our bike rack back in and we can actually use it now.
So that's good. One. We're actually going to be able to use the bike rack. Two. Our bike rack is not going to be so close to the bumper and our exhaust. So nothing's going to melt and our bikes are going to be a little bit safer this way. So now we can line it all up and we're pretty much good to go. So we want to make sure that you get at least the amount of the extension that you need, and we don't want to get not enough extension. So with any extension, whether it's two inches or if it's 10 inches like this one here, we're going to cut our hitches capacity in half. So be mindful of that. One. If you have a Current like this, which is made for the electric bikes, we might not be able to put those really heavy bikes on depending on what kind of hitch that you have. But just keep that in mind, any extension is going to cut your hitch's capacity in half. So as you can see, we have plenty of room now. We're not going to have any issues with hitting the bumper, the exhaust isn't going to be too close to the rack. And then now that we can fold it down, the bikes are gonna be even farther apart, farther away. So with this, even with the bikes installed, we're still going to be able to open up this hatch because it kind of sticks out to about here. It all depends on the handlebars though. But we can have access, we're not damaging our vehicle, and our vehicle is not damaging our unit or our bikes. It is going to be made of steel. Powder-coated finish. And we have so many of these on our website. So you just want to make sure you get the amount of extension that you need. I would say get more than less, just because you are going to cut your hitch's capacity in half. So might as well get more than less. So all in all, we just want to make sure everything works. So with an extension, we can either make it easier on ourselves, limit our cars less, or just allow us to use more accessories. And that'll do it for our look at the Brophy 10 inch extension for your inch and a quarter hitches. And I'm Adam with etrailer..

I recently had a hitch installed on my car. Since the cargo carrier that I have was used previously without an adapter, I assumed that I didn't need one. Now trying to locate one was more of an effort than locating a hitch. The local auto parts stores of national brands don't keep them in stock. One store made an inquiry but didn't give me much hope. Now I can make a rode trip in confidence that the carrier will be secure as I head down the interstate.

100% disabled American Veteran. Needed a new option to transport my powered wheelchair. Existing Class I hitch receiver was located too far (internally) from the bumper of my car. Nothing available at any of the local big-box retailers. What to do? Happily, eTrailer came to the rescue with this 10" Class I hitch extension that easily solved my problem. It allows the receiver opening to protrude far enough past my car's rear bumper to connect with the self-supporting wheelchair lift I purchased. Without this extension, I would have been unable to transport my chair. I contacted eTrailer, spoke with Customer Service and was very pleasantly surprised at how quickly this was delivered to me! This is exactly what I needed since my new hitch is recessed about 4 inches from my rear bumper. The connecting bar on my bike rack would not reach my hitch. Almost bought the 6" version, but once I noticed the availability of the 10" extention, I decided it would provide greater distance, keeping the handle bars away from my SUV rear window. Great product and their staff are extremely helpful if you need to call them :-)

I'm not an employee of eTrailer. In fact, I had never heard of the company until I found them on the internet when I was trying to find a solution to my problem: My wife is battling Stage IV cancer and loves to take long drives (like the entire Blue-Ridge Parkway, the Natchez Trace Parkway, etc.) in her hard-top convertible. Because the cancer is progressing, she is now confined to a wheelchair. Since the entire trunk is filled with the hard top when the top is down, we couldn't put her wheelchair in the trunk and then drive with the top down. I had a small trailer hitch installed so we could use a bike rack to hang her wheelchair on the back. BIG PROBLEM: When the trunk would open to accept the hard-top, it would bang into the rack. I purchased the eTrailer hitch extender and it works PERFECTLY. In a way, this product has contributed in a big way to her quality of life.

This hitch extender was delivered quickly, looks great and is sturdily built. I bought the HES0 hitch extender because I have a pretty short, high trailer for my sailboat. This has the rear bumper of my tow vehicle underwater while launching and recovering on all but the steepest ramps. I was planning to have my trailer modified, but this option was not cost-effective. My hitch receiver is only a 1 1/4 and could only use this model with a total extension of 10 inches. This may not solve my problem as well as the models designed for 2" that have a total extension of 18" but at the least allow me to open the rear door while still hooked up.

I bought this extension to give me a little more reach when launching a newly purchased Montgomery 15 sailboat. My car is a 2005 Subaru Outback. I won't be using this extension for towing the boat, just only for launching. Also,when the extension is used with my bicycle rack I can fully open the rear hatchback on the Subaru with bikes attached. This is very convenient. Purchasing from etrailer is the way to go. Very prompt service.

Nice 1 1/1/4" hitch heavy duty extender--hard to find in stores. Fits so tight inside hitch that advise putting oil on part that fits into hitch. Otherwise it may be hard to impossible to get back out. Goo tight fit thhough prevents bike rack wobbling.

Purchased because my bike rack was too close to the back of the car. The quality of this product is top notch and eTrailer was excellent to deal with. This item moved the bike rack 10 inches back, making the bike rack easier to use. You won't be disappointed.

Very nice hitch extentsion. However with so many joints it wobles a bit and needs extra tightenting so my bike doesn't dance down the road.

Just installed this extension on my Polaris Razor. Couldnt attach a trailer because of the rear bumper I installed. This cured the problem. This extension is heavy duty and installed easily.

Bought both the 10" and the 6" extension version. Have only used the 6" so far. Quality is so-so. Receiving end of the device as VERY loose (oversized). Need to add shims in to try to help keep the rattles down.
