Solution for Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier that Interferes with Rear Bumper
Question:
I purchased and installed the draw tie hitch receiver for my 2007 accord. Installed with no issues and per the instructions. However, Im unable to actually attach any accessories. I purchased the Curt cargo carrier 17x46 1.25 and 2 inch hitch. The cargo carried was easy to assemble, but the distance from the hitch hole and the basket is about 1/2 inch too short to attach to my vehicle without denting my bumper to get the pin in. I figured since this accessory was a dual size hitch, I would purchase an extender or an adapter to convert the receiver from 1.25 to 2. I have been unable to find an adapter that will work I am assuming this is because of the safety tabinch on the draw tie receiver. Can you point me in the direction of a solution?? I realize this was purchased in June of 2017, but Im hoping you can help. Thank you!

I do have a possible solution for you. In order to extend your hitch receiver out from behind the Accord's rear bumper, I recommend using a 1-1/4 inch hitch extender like the Brophy # HES6 for a 6 inch extension or # HES0 for a 10 inch extension. These are both compatible with your Class I hitch and will keep the receiver opening at 1-1/4 inches on the other end. This should give you enough length to clear the rear bumper and allow for hitch-mounted accessories to mount without interfering.
An important thing to keep in mind though is that using this or any other similar hitch adapter is going to reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50%. This means that the 200 pound tongue weight capacity on the Draw-Tite hitch you have installed will be reduced to 100 pounds when using the adapter. You will need to make sure that the combined weight of both the carrier and its contents do not exceed this limit.
I have attached a couple short video demonstrations on these adapters that you can take a look at.
