Video Transcript for Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation - 2012 Chevrolet Silverado

Speaker 1: Today on this 2012 Chevrolet Silverado we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 31322. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. This hitch will be a great way to use certain add-ons with your truck such as winches, snow plows, cargo carriers, bike racks and even occasionally a ball mount, if you need to move a trailer around. On the side of our receiver, you'll find your industry standard five-eighth of an inch diameter hitch pin hole. On the end of our receiver, you'll find this collar that's welded on to give us a nice finish look, and to help reinforce the receiver opening, giving us some added strength. This hitch features a 500 pound max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down. It has a 5,000 pound max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull.

It also features a 9,000 pound straight line pull rating. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessory you may need, such as your bike rack, cargo carrier, winch mounting plate, or snow plow. You're looking at about 13 and 3/4 inches from the ground to the top of the two inch receiver opening, and about eight inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the front most part of the bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, we'll be working at the front left of our Silverado on the inside of the frame rail. We'll start by removing these two 21 millimeter nuts that are in place from the factory. Now we'll remove these two 18 millimeter bolts.

The front one here we have to have an 18 millimeter wrench on the back side holding the nut still as we remove it. And here's the nut. Now we'll take our drivers side bracket, and we'll hang it on the two bolts, and we'll loosely thread on the nuts, just to hold it in place. Now, the bolt that we removed from the front bottom hole, we're going to reverse the orientation of it, so we'll flip it like this and install it from the outside of the frame going through our bracket. Now we have two washers. We need to put these two washers between the bracket and they'll go on to this bolt here, so it'll go on this bolt between the bracket and the frame.

Now we'll loosely thread on our nut. Now we'll take two more washers, and we'll slide them between our frame and the frame bracket, and then run our bolt through them. Now you can see what the washers look like in place, hanging on the bolts in between our frame and the frame bracket. Our passenger side is a little bit different. All of our hardware is on the outside of the frame and not on the inside. For our front bolt on the bottom here again, we will need to have an 18 millimeter wrench, holding the nut still on the inside.

We'll remove this 18 millimeter bolt, and we'll remove those two 21 millimeter nuts. Now, on these two bolts where our 21 millimeter nuts were, they are on a plate. We need to knock these bolts out and reverse the orientations so they'll come through on the outside. When they're knocked free, we can grab the plate, pull it out, and our bolts come with it. We'll now take that plate and place it through on the outside. We'll now place our long bolt through the front hole on the bottom, and we'll reinstall the short bolt in the back hole. We can tighten that bolt down now. On our bottom bolt here, place on two washers, place our bracket on, and reinstall the nuts. We'll leave these loose. Now with an extra set of hands we'll raise our hitch in between our brackets, take our carriage bolt, go through the hitch, through our bracket, and we'll thread on our flange nut. We get one started on each side. Now that we have one started on each side, we'll get our other ones to start as well. Now we'll take our fish wire. We'll go through the hole and our hitch, bring it off to the side for a second. Now we'll place on two flat washers on our pull wire. We'll slide those flat like that. We'll slide on this oval spacer shim on our pull wire. Make sure that sits flat against the hole, and we'll take the pull wire, go through the hole and the frame, and I'll push the pull wire up where it'll come out this access hole in the frame. And place our block under the wire, push it inside, and we'll thread our carriage bolt on. Push that in, and we'll start to pull it through our frame. With our bolt through, we can remove our pull wire. We'll now thread on our flange nut.Now we can begin the process of tightening all the hardware since it's all in place. Use an 11/16 socket to tighten down the carriage bolts. For this one here, next to our frame horn, you will need a wrench to tighten it. Now we'll tighten down our frame brackets to the frame. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. And that completes our look at and showing you how to install the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 31322, on this 2012 Chevrolet Silverado.

Easy install will need to use the washers on the driver side plate mount at truck frame on 2008 silverado to take up the gap I put 2 on the bottom of each bolt and one on each of the top bolts. Should be good to use for my snowbear snow plow 390965

I installed the hitch to use with my 32' camper trailer. It works great! I have to move the camper up a steep grade that has two sharp turns, making it hard to do with the traditional rear hitch due to limited space. Having this hitch on the front of the truck made it a breeze. Easy to install and well built. 343767

I bought the Curt front hitch for the purpose to haul my Honda Generator on the Torklift Lock and Load in front of my 2009 Chevy Silverado. The installation is self explanatory, but I still watched the video provided by e-trailer, and it made it that much easier to put in. Especially by myself. It works perfectly for the purpose I bought it for. 192530

Love doing business with e-trailer. The website is wonderfully designed to help you find products, watch easy-to-understand installation videos, talk to a live, friendly, helpful person and buy online or over the phone. I bought a 'front mount trailer hitch' for the price listed on the website (which was much cheaper than I could find anywhere), got free shipping, received in a couple of days, and installed in a couple of hours (thanks to the e-trailer video). This is my from-now-on, "go-to company" for everything trailer related. Thanks Crystal (with e-trailer) 503884

Curt Front Trailer Hitch arrived quite fast. The hitch is very sturdy and attaches to the sturdy tow hooks. The instructional video was very helpful especially for the step where you "fish" a bolt through the front frame rail. Turned out to be simple with the included fishwire. The video was for a 2007 Silverado but it was exactly the same as for my 2010 1500 Silverado. Best installed with a helper at one point on a lift, but I installed it by myself using a pair of wheel ramps, a creeper, and a small hydraulic jack to lift the hitch into place for fitting and installation. Why install a front hitch? When maneuvering a trailer in tight quarters, it is hard to do it with the trailer connected to the back of the tow vehicle. You have to keep straight which way to turn the steering wheel and the trailer's turning is slow to respond so you often turn too far and have to start over. With the trailer attached to the front of the vehicle, you can push the trailer into a tight place easily since the trailer responds immediately to steering changes. And, you can easily and immediately see the changes to the trailer's path. And you can also pull the trailer out of a tight path easily. I grew up on a farm always pulling and pushing trailers into exact spots. I quickly found how great a front end hitch is for maneuvering. 286645

This trailer hitch receiver is a little challenging attaching to my 2008 GMC 1500. The two sides attached just fine with the factory bolts, but the rear center support didn't line up with the attachment hole in the frame. Of course this last attachment point requires fishing a bolt and washer through the hollow frame, which was easier than expected. However, I had to use two clamps to push the receiver into place which made it challenging fishing the bolt into place and lining up the required washers. The receiver itself is solidly built. 478324

Very stout hitch with nice, thick paint job. Will do the job very well. The only thing I'd change about the hitch is how far back the receiver is. It's slightly UNDER the bumper, so I had to find my longest drawbar to make the ball clear the front of the truck. I'd rather it stuck out several inches farther forward. I also needed two deep-set sockets to get this install done: a 21mm and an 18mm. Regular sockets were not deep enough to go over the bolts to get to the nuts. I'd also recommend having a breaker bar handy. The factory torqued a couple of bolts down incredibly tight. Because of this the install took me a couple of hours, not the 60 minutes the instructions said. 70080

The hitch came packaged in a double box. The outer box had some damage but the hitch did not. I read the instructions, making sure i had the correct tools, and jacked my truck up. The install took three hours as i was layiing on my back with simple hand tools. The parts all fit and i am happy with the outcome. Good price, simple instructions, good fit. 461097

This product fit my needs perfectly. I purchased this hitch to mount a bicycle rack to the front of my pickup truck as I did not want to add weight to the back of my camp trailer on the flimsy bumper that is standard, and did not want to spend a fortune on a hitch that needed drilled or welded to my camp trailer. I looked at several options, and this appeared to be the best choice. With the video instructions and an hour of time, I had this hitch installed and bicycle rack in place. This product was relatively easy to install, and will suit my needs very well. Thank you etrailer! 390400

I ordered both the front and rear Curt class 3 hitches for my 2008 Gm sierra. The factory rear hitch had rusted from the inside and had split all the way across. This new hitch is a lot more heavy duty , with thicker metal and the ends are sealed to keep water out. I liked it so much , I ordered this front hitch to use our bicycle rack on front when we pull our camper . Did not know how to carry our bikes until I ran across this hitch on Trailer. I think it will solve our problem . Thanks etrailer !!! Also had best price, got free shipping, prompt service, and excellent customer service !! Will definitely order from them again !!! 475471

I ordered on Monday and received it on Wednesday. Properly packaged and in perfect shape. I installed the hitch by myself and without the aid of a lift of any kind. Just lai on my back in my driveway. I sprayed my existing hardware with WD 40 two days before the install. Everything came apart just fine. I installed th hitch according to the instructions and video. The only problem I had involved fishing a bolt through my frame. It took me about 20 minutes to get into position. Once the bolt was through the frame hole, I could not get it to line up with the frame support. I ended up taking a bar clamp and pulling the hitch back far enough for the bolt to drop into the hole. All together I spent about 3 hours. 366778

I like the new front hitch for my Silverado, especially receiving it so quickly after ordering. I truly did not expect it to arrive so quickly. And, the shipping container was undamaged, another plus. The hitch itself is quite good, and probably is easier to install than most, being in three pieces, to bolt together when in place on the truck. It certainly looks strong enough, but there was a little non-alignment with the attachment holes in the truck. Everything went together eventually, and I did it without a friend's help. 59708

Fit between the mounting brackets on my 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 was a little tight but it bolted up just fine. Looks very well made. I removed the lower front air dam ( I didn't like it anyway) & it fit perfectly underneath the bumper & license plate mount. Will be using the front hitch skid shield with this. 25074

Comments

FYI: The air dam is there to help with aerodynamics on the underside of the truck. In short, it helps make the truck more fuel efficient. No harm in removing it if you dont mind burning a bit more fuel.

I am a "Do It Yourselfer", this hitch took me about 90 minutes total to install on my 2011 GMC Sierra. It is a good quality product. It shipped as advertised, and fit. The small 2 1/2 " square cut at the bottom of the fender skirt is very low profile and I covered it completely with a decorative insert. I recomend this product for anyone that has a tight spot or corner to get their trailer into or around. 7364

Did you need to use the fishing wire?

Bryan did not leave an email address with his review, so I cannot get in touch with him. You will need the fish wire in order to get the last carriage bolt and block in place for the arm of th ehitch that extends up towards the front of the vehicle.

Do you have a question about this Front Hitch?

  • Front-Mount Trailer Hitch for 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • Yes, the front-mount trailer hitch receiver you referenced, Draw-Tite # 65052, is a confirmed fit for your 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. We do in fact offer another comparably-rated front hitch for your truck, the Curt # 31322. Both hitches install using included hardware, both will require a bit of trimming of the front fascia, and neither one requires any drilling. For reference I have linked an installation video for the Curt hitch as well as written installation instructions and...

  • Both the Curt Front Hitch part # 31322 and the Draw Tite part # 65052 are a fit for the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500. They have similar prices, similar capacities and will give you a hitch opening in about the same location. Biggest difference is they are made by different brands and use different parts of the vehicle to mount the side brackets. Since the Draw Tite is totally welded and does not have any sections that are bolted together it would be what I would go with.

If you have the Sierra 1500, I instead recommend the Curt Front Mount Hitch # C31069. This hitch is confirmed to fit your truck and it features a simple, bolt-on installation. It has a line pull rating...

  • Will the Fisher MM2 Snowplow Mounting Brackets Work With a Front Mount Hitch Receiver
  • I do have an option that will allow you to attach a snowplow to the front of your 2010 Chevy Silverado 1500 but the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 31322 will not work with the Fisher MM2 Mount Kit as they both occupy the same space on the frame rails. For a snowplow that will work well with a 2" front mount trailer hitch receiver and your Chevy Silverado 1500, I recommend using the Detail K2 Avalanche Snowplow part # K2AVAL8219. The Detail K2 Avalanche has an 82" wide...

It will be necessary to do some trimming of the front fascia to make room for the receiver tube on either hitch. A helpful installation video and article are linked for you.

  • We do offer two front-mount 2-inch hitches for your 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 including the Curt # 31322 that you referenced. We have an installation video showing a 2007 Silverado that you can see by clicking on the included link. Also the written instructions are linked for you at right. • Front Mount Hitch Receiver and Winch Mount for a 2006 Ford F-350 4x4
  • Curt front receiver # 31322 is designed for certain GM trucks so for your 2006 Ford F-350 4x4 it will not fit but you can use # 65022. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. We have several hitch mounted winch plates such as # SW2050 or # C31010 that may work for you depending on the mounting hole pattern for your winch. I have included a link to the options but please note not all of them are hitch mount options.

  • Bull Bar and Front Hitch Recommendation for a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • Surprisingly the Bull Bar by Westin # 32-2275 would be compatible with the Front Hitch part # 31322 on your 2012 Chevy Silverado. The hitch installs under the front of the vehicle and attaches to the outside of the frame rails and the Bull Bar installs by inserting into the frame rail and goes through the front fascia of the truck so they would both fit together. For lights could use the # 09-0105.

  • Front Hitch Availability for the 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • The only front mount hitches that are available or your 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 are ones that locate the hitch opening below the front bumper of the truck like the Curt Hitch part # 31322 or the Draw Tite Hitch part # 65052. Often times the lower hitches are preferred for people looking to plow snow like with the K2 # K2AVAL8219.

  • Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Installation for a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500
  • For installation of Curt front mount trailer hitch # 31322 you may or may not need to use the washers on the driver's or passenger's side attachment points. If there was enough of a gap between the side mounting brackets and the cross member of the hitch then you would use them. The square piece you mentioned is a block used to prevent that center carriage bolt from spinning when tightening the nut. It is possible it won't be needed but the only way to know is to fishwire the bolt through...

  • Curt Front Hitch for 2009 Chevy 3500 HD 4x4
  • There is a Curt front mount hitch that will work on your 2009 Chevy Silverado, but the Curt Hitch # 31322 that you referenced is only for 1500 model trucks. You would want a Curt Front Hitch # 31109. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product for you to check out also.
