When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Dexter Brake Actuator w/ Drop

Today we're going to take a look at the Titan Brake Actuator with 3" Drop. This is going to be a primed actuator that's going to fit your hydraulic drum brakes. It's going to work with your 2 5/16" ball, and it does a weld on design with a 12,500 pound capacity. This is going to be a great way to help your trailer come to a nice even stop, since this is going to apply your brakes in portion to how fast you're slowing down with your towed vehicle.Basically, this is just going to work on a mechanical principle. As you slow down, your trailer is going to want to push forward, and so that's going to active the actuator inside here, and push out that hydraulic fluid to your hydraulic drum brakes, so as you slow down, and it compresses, it sends out that fluid, and it brings you to a stop.Inside here we'll have a unique roller design. Basically, that just help to reduce any resistance, so it doesn't have to fight just metal to metal as it's coming to that stop.

It's going to just nicely flow, so you get a better straight line of brake force there. The construction with this is going to be a nice durable steel, so it's going to prevent any kind of bending in a jackknife situation if you're stopping at a turn, or you're going around a sharp curve, something like that. It's going to resist any jackknifing there. As you can see, we'll have a nice primed gray finish here, so you will want to paint this again to match with your trailer. We'll have our breakaway kit already installed. That's going to be this chain up top. Just have it looped around, so you can see the end, but that will have an S hook on the one end, so you can attach that to your towed vehicle.

And then in the event that your trailer get disconnected from your towed vehicle, that will pull this lever, and that will trip the brake and operate your actuator, so that your trailer comes to a safe stop. Now, this is going to be a weld on design. It has a 3" drop for our trailer, so we can match that up with the height of our towed vehicle. We'll have our coupler latch here. Pull that back. It allows you to get your 2 5/16" ball attached, and then that drops back in place whenever you're coupled. There is a space so you can put a lock in there as well, so that if there is a pin going through there you can't pull that up and out of place, and no one can either disconnect, or connect up to your trailer without having a key for that lock.

Now, it doesn't come with a coupler lock, but there is a lot of options here at etrailer.com. Definitely check that out if you don't already have one and you're interested in finding one.At the back, you'll see our hydraulic connection there. It's going to be behind that little plug. This is going to fit with a 3" wide channel tongue design. And then on the side here, you'll see that there is a grease circ 00:03:06 that helps to keep all our rollers inside working nicely and smoothly, so you want to check that every once in awhile.

Keep it nice and greased up, so it works properly.Again, this is going to have a capacity of 12,500 pounds. The maximum tongue weight that we can use this with is going to be 1,250 pounds, or 1250 pounds. Overall, this is going to be a very nice looking actuator. If you need that 3" drop this will work out really well for you, and keep you safe as you're towing your trailer down the road. That's going to do it for our look at the Titan Brake Actuator with Drop.

Installed as expected. Replaced identical Titan system. The replacement is not as smooth....bangs around substantially more than the previous. Bleed brakes multiple times, reservoir topped off still rough towing.

Only reason I didn’t give this a five star rating was because I had to call the company to get them to actually ship the park to me. It kept getting delayed day after day and shipping at the warehouse. Once I called and asked what the deal was it was shipped for that day. Set on the shelf for two weeks before it got shipped. Only after I called.
