How Can I Add A Standard Trailer Coupler To A Trailer With A 4" Wide Tongue?

Updated 06/14/2024 | Published 06/07/2024

Question:

Hello, I have a sailboat trailer that has an old Dexter brake actuator that has rotted away on the inside. Possibly your Item T1735200 It is welded on a 4 wide tongue. The trailer has had its brakes removed a long time ago and I am looking to replace this unit with a bolt on coupler. Do you have anything that would fit on a 4 section? Are there any other options to replace this unit that do not require welding? Thank you.

Hello Walter. I do have a solution for you, but we do not have a traditional bolt-on coupler that will fit over a 4" channel. What I recommend using is a channel coupler that will weld to the front of the trailer tongue. For the channel you can use part # BDAC3000300. Then for the coupler use part # PSA200S0303. This will give you an adjustable 2" ball coupler. The channel will of course need to be welded to the front of the trailer. With no traditional bolt-on options available, some welding/modification will be required no matter what you do.
