Solution for Reverse Lockout on Demco DA70 Actuator

Updated 12/17/2025 | Published 07/19/2022

Question:

Will the Manual Reverse Lockout Kit for Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuators # DM5939 used for DA91 work with the Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator for DA70? I have a Demco DA70 and am looking for a manual reverse lockout kit. Please advise if etrailer carries this.

The # DM5939 is only compatible with the DA91 like the # DM8759131. Unfortunately, there is no option for manual lockout on a DA70 like the # # DM72VR. There are two ways you can keep your brakes from locking up with this brake actuator.

The first is to add a solenoid like the # DM11993. The other option you have is to switch out the brakes on your trailer with free backing brakes like # AKFBBRK-35-D. These brakes won't engage in reverse so there would be no need to add a lockout to your actuator. These fit a 3,500 lb axle with a 4 bolt brake flange and 10" x 2-1/4" drum. You would need to choose the correct brakes based on what you have on your trailer.

So I have 2 Demco da70 actuators, one for drum and one for disc brakes. I guess I’m screwed because I want to pouch my trailers in my barn with a front receiver. This is a disaster. I have new brakes so I’m not changing them. I have the solenoids but when moving in tight spaces I’m using a truck with a front receiver and no wiring…..what should I do?

@KirkK I have heard of some people adding in some kind of quick disconnect fitting to pull the line when they don't have an electric lockout or a model that can use a lockout key. That is probably your best option.
