Can Demco Surge Actuator Replace Atwood Without Requiring New Hardware

Updated 05/07/2026 | Published 05/01/2026

Question:

I am replacing an Atwood surge brake actuator on a 1996 V/M trailer. Its my understanding that I can use a Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator DM72VR for drum brakes. What Im not clear on is what additional hardware and hydraulic hosing I will need to perform the replacement. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Mark, yes the Demco surge actuator part # DM72VR can be used to replace the Atwood surge actuator you have currently. You most likely won't have to really change anything. There is probably a flexible brake line that attaches to the back of your current actuator but if not most of the time hardlines can be bent to match the master cylinder of this actuator.

Is it possible to upload several images so I can clarify what I have to work with?

I replaced the same Atwood hydraulic coupler. The Demco came with the fitting to match the brake line. Holes might be different. My old one was welded on so I had to drill holes. Works great, super easy to bleed the brakes. Be sure to download the factory instructions from Demco as mine didn't come with any. The diagram shows all of the items that come with it. You will need to reuse or replace the bolts and nuts.

It was an easy install. All I needed were new bolts. Works great. Definitely would recommend it.
