Replacement for Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 85778

Question:

I have an older 2005 ez-Loader trailer. I had new breaks and tires put on recently but the break actuator was not able to be fixed. It says on the unit See owners manual P/N 85778inch and on the side it says its an Atwood. I know they are no longer in business. What should I buy to replace the old one. Thank You.

The replacement I recommend for an Atwood Surge Brake Actuator 85778 is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator part # DM62VR. It has the same ball size, offers a bolt-on install, and has a greater capacity. The only difference is it has an electric lockout as opposed to a manual one.

I have the same Atwood on my EZ Loader as well, but I have drum brakes. Given the DEMCO is for disc brakes, what is my option for replacing the Atwood 85778?

@BrianH since your EZ Loader has hydraulic drum brakes, the replacement for the Atwood 85778 is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes # DM72VR. It fits a 3" wide straight tongue, uses a 2" hitch ball, and a solid replacement for the discontinued Atwood actuator. One thing to note is that the # DM72VR does not include a reverse lockout. If your trailer does not have free backing drum brakes, you'll want to add the Reverse Lockout Solenoid Kit # DM5836 so you can back up without the surge brakes engaging. If your trailer already has free backing brakes, the solenoid isn't needed.
