Simple, Hidden Design

Blue Ox Base Plate With Arms AttachedBlue Ox Base Plate Arms Removed

This base plate's hidden design creates a clean and seamless look. The bracket arms are easily removable, creating a slick appearance when you're not flat towing. Because the arms can be removed, you also won't have to worry about banging your leg into any protruding arms when you walk by.

Blue Ox Base Plate Removable Arms

Attaching and removing the bracket arms is a breeze. To attach the arms to the base plate, simply insert them into the receivers and rotate them until they lock into place. Once you're finished towing and want to remove the arms, pull the pin to disengage the lock, rotate the arms, and remove them from the receivers. Finally, plug up the now empty receivers with the included receiver covers to help keep dirt and debris out of the base plate and provide a finished look.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Towing Basics

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

I wondered why they cost so much. Now that I have them I can see why, they are extremely heavy duty and very well made. They fit perfectly on my Yukon.

2001 Chevrolet Suburban

My base plate and tow bar were delivered as promised. I have installed the base plate and look forward to being able to tow my suburban. Thank you, Roger

by:

Tow Bar and Base Plate Kit showed up two days before they were
expected. Terrific service. Have not installed the Base Plate Kit yet, crummy weather to work outside, waiting for a sunny weekend. Thanks Melissa

by:

These brackets are like a tank. HEAVY. Well built.
After I muddled my way past the first step which didn't apply to my vehicle (and confused the HECK out of me) thinks were well explained and went much faster than I thought they would.

My only complaint is what Blue Ox charges for them.

Etrailer has a GREAT support staff willing to help with any questions.

by:

Very easy to install and a snap to use, I hate losing my tow hooks. A plug in tow hook would be great

by:

Base plate worked great. Easy hookup and disconnect of tow vehicle.

by:

A little bit of drilling and the base plate went on perfect. Thanks for offering this great part.

by:

  • Can the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682 Tow a 2002 Yukon SLT that Weighs Over 5,000 lbs
The 5,000-lb weight limit restriction that you are reading in the installation notes for the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682 says that an adapter cannot be used for vehicles over 5,000 lbs. It also states that you will want to check the weight of your model vehicle as some models exceed the 5,000-lb weight limit that the Blue Ox Kit has. The Kit # BX1682 that you mentioned is a confirmed fit for the 2002 GMC Yukon Denali model only so it will not be compatible with your SLT model. The...

I have a solution for you, but the Blue Ox # BX1682 are not a confirmed fit on the 2018 Ram 1500 Big Horn edition. Instead, you'll need to use the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # BLU74FR, which are compatible with Blue Ox Acclaim, Adventurer, Aladdin, Allure, Alpha, Avail, Aventa, and Trion tow bars. There are some other parts that you might need in order to complete your flat towing package for a 2018 Ram 1500 Big Horn, like tow bar wiring, safety cables, supplemental braking...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2004 GMC Sierra 1500
In order to flat tow your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 behind your RV, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. I also recommend checking your owner's manual for the Sierra for any specific guidelines or restrictions when it comes to towing the truck with all four wheels on the ground. Starting with the base plates, if your Sierra 1500 is the LD model, I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682. If you have the HD model,...

The correct Blue Ox base plate kit for your truck is the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682 which fits the 1500 LD or the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1660 for the 1500 HD, 2500 or 3500. To flat tow your Silverado, you will also need a tow bar, safety cables, tow bar wiring and a supplemental braking system. If you need those parts as well, I have listed them...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2002 GMC Yukon XL
Yes, you can flat tow your 2002 GMC Yukon XL. There are a number of parts you need in order to do this, and they are all available separately instead of in a single kit. Starting with compatible base plates, for your 2002 GMC Yukon XL you need Blue Ox Base Plates # BX1682. For a tow bar I recommend going with the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7380 because of how easy the tow bar is to connect to the base plates as well as its long arms, which make it easier to maneuver when towing; it also comes with...

  • Is there a Base Plate for a 1962 Chevy Pickup?
No, there are no custom fit base plates for a truck that old. The only thing I can offer you is the Blue Ox Heavy-Duty Universal Bolt-On Adapter Tabs item # BX88266. These are compatible with Blue Ox tow bars and are a universal part. They bolt directly into the bumper which will likely require additional support to be added as well.

  • What Base Plate do I Need to Flat-Tow My 2004 GMC Yukon SLT
The base plate I recommend to flat-tow your 2004 GMC Yukon SLT is the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # 199-6. I recommend this base plate kit because it has removable arms, giving it a clean look when not towing. If you need a tow bar, I recommend the Roadmaster BlackHawk 2 All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount - 2" Hitch # RM-422. I recommend this tow bar because it has a latch that makes disconnecting very easy. When flat-towing you will also...

Instead the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7380 would be your best option because it has a 6,500 lb capacity like what you would need for your 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71. This tow bar also comes with coiled safety cables which are required as well. For a base plate kit the part # BX1682 would fit and work...

You need to remove the IGN 0 fuse. Your fuse box should have a diagram on the inside cover. Flat towing safely and legally requires a few components, including the tow bar, safety cables, a wiring/lighting kit, a braking system and base plates on the towed vehicle. Sometimes a wiring extension and high/low hitch adapter are needed too.
