Features to know about

Built for Long Trips: Direct-Connect Strength That Lasts

When you’re towing across states, you want hardware that feels solid the whole way. The Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit uses computer-cut, all-steel construction for exceptional strength. Every part bolts directly to the frame and spreads towing forces evenly, so it can handle thousands of miles without loosening up or flexing. The black powder-coat finish keeps rust away through rain, salt, and highway grime for long-term reliability.

Clean Look When Parked: Hidden Brackets and Removable Arms

Once the removable drawbars are out, the front brackets practically disappear into the grille area. There’s no bulky crossbar sticking out, so the vehicle keeps its clean look when not in tow. Because those brackets sit farther back than standard designs, they’re also protected from scrapes and bumps around the driveway or campsite.

Hook Up Fast: Twist-Lock Arms with Built-In Pull Rings

Each drawbar slides in, clicks, and twists to lock—no tools or extra pins needed. Built-in pull rings let you release the arms quickly when it’s time to unhook. The design makes solo hookups or tight campsite maneuvers much easier since the connection points stay lined up and secure every time.

No Welding Needed: Bolt-On Fit with Included Hardware

Everything attaches with bolts using the included mounting hardware—no welding required. The direct-connect design eliminates the need for a quick-disconnect crossbar altogether, keeping setup simpler and lighter. With good step-by-step instructions, it’s straightforward work for anyone comfortable with basic tools and a weekend project mindset.

Purpose-Built Pairing: Works Only with Roadmaster Motor-Home-Mounted Tow Bars

This kit is designed specifically for Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch such as the Nighthawk, Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon, or Falcon 2. That dedicated pairing means a precise fit and a smoother towing experience without extra adapters or guesswork.

Outstanding product and even better customer service! Two backyard mechanics installed baseplate and braking system with just one call to confirm proper wire connection. Total package works great.

Shipping was fast and installation was easy. Installation time took about 4 hours with no issues. Installed on 2019 Subaru 6sp Crosstrek.

Excellent instructions and thank goodness for the installation videos. While being reasonably handy, installing this on our Subaru with <2,000 miles on it was straightforward and completed w/o problems.
Looking for a way to use this for rescue attachment points…

I am glad the installation went smoothly. I did have a question for you. I was not sure what you meant by wanting to use it for rescue attachment point. Would you be able to explain in more detail.

6/20/2023

If I was stuck or if I could help someone else who is stuck, could a rescue strap be attached to one or both front tow bar brackets? They would be strong enough right? They would be at least as strong as the rear receiver. I know a Crosstrek is not really a strong off-road vehicle but…just wondered.

Jenny N. profile picture

Jenny N.

6/20/2023

While I would like to say yes, I would need to caution against it. They have not been tested in this way and I do not believe that they would be strong enough. The reason that I say that is that they are designed to be the attachment point for a rolling [on wheels] load versus non rolling [just a straight static] load. Kind of like pulling a 50-pound load on a cart versus picking up a 50-pound box. I hope that this makes sense. Plus, if something were to bend or break it would not be covered under the warranty on the base plate with the manufacturer.

I’ve towed my 2023 Crosstrek over 2500 miles ast year with these baseplates and hitch. No issues. Tows even and straight. Easiest connections of any hitch I’ve used.

Have pulled my 2018 Subaru Crosstrek over 2k miles of hills and tight curves with no problems.
Easy install on the Crosstrek. You can see it after you remove the connection arms but doesn’t stand out, hardly noticeable. The only thing that RM could improve is the powder coating, around where you install arms flakes off and is sharp as glass. Would purchase again.

After one year of use I would purchase this base plate again. Has held up with no problems other than the powder coating flaking off at connection points and the coating flakes are sharp. Easy to touch up the places the coating has come off with some black paint and it doesn’t happen again till it wears off.

by:

I have had this for over a year and it was a straight forward install with good instructions. I have many miles on it, including a trip from Texas to Alaska, with no problems.

The Roadmaster Base Plate and All Terrain Direct Connect Tow Bar worked perfect for my 6-Speed Subaru CrossTrek. Looking forward to exploring and traveling later this spring.

This baseplate fit my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek manual transmission perfectly and was fairly easy to install for a non-mechanic. Good instructions. No problems with towing using a Roadmaster All-Terrain towbar.

  • Can You Flat Tow A 2023 Subaru Crosstrek With A Manual Transmission
As long as your transmission is placed in neutral you will be able to flat tow your 2023 Subaru Crosstrek. To flat tow your Crosstrek you'll need the following parts: Baseplate: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-52927-5. Tow Bar: etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar # e74ZR. This tow bar is designed to work with the baseplate I recommended above and comes with an adjustable head and shank to help keep the tow bar level between your motorhome and vehicle. Yes, your 2019 Subaru Crosstrek with a manual transmission is flat-towable. You'll need a few things to do this. First is a base plate kit. For that you'd want the Roadmaster Direct Connect kit part # RM-52927-5 which is custom fit for your vehicle so it will install easily and work well. I wasn't able to find anything that said the manual transmission model cannot be flat towed. With that being said it's not up to me, it's up to Subaru. And I can't recommend you going against what they're telling you. There very well could be other factors that prevent the car from being flat towed other than the transmission. I can't recall the exact model/year but there are some Subarus that cannot be flat towed because the front bumper is rated or towing. Not sure if this is the...

The CVT models obviously have to be towed off the ground, but the manual transmission models can be towed with all four wheels down. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits manufacturers from voiding warranties based on aftermarket parts so as long as you correctly install the baseplate and follow all the rules that go along with flat towing your Subaru you would be protected....
