Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the connector located beneath your vehicle's dashboard and left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. There will be a 4-pin connector that mates with the adaptor.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

2024 Subaru Ascent

I am not mechanical in any way and was told by a ship it would run about $450-$500 to install my break Controller. With this plug-in adaptor and the extremely easy to follow instructions. I installed it in less than 15 minutes, and it works perfectly.

by:

As of today, I have not connected to my travel trailer. However, a big thanks to the people who made the installation instructions. They showed the exact location of the car end (female end) of the cable. I did remove the one plastic trim panel to make reaching it easier. It's held in place by one turn and pull button.

by:

Will try and return this. When I went to install I noticed this did not have an inline fuse. The supplied Subaru harness that came with my car did have the inline fuse. Although this product would have been simple plug and play, I opted to do the wiring myself because I wanted to be sure I had that protection between my tow vehicle and trailer.

You are welcome to return the unused brake controller adapter plug. Before you do though, I asked around and while we have not seen a factory brake controller pigtail for the Subaru Ascent it is unlikely to contain a fuse as fuse protection needs to be close to the battery. It may be a diode which is more common and in which case this harness would have one as well although hidden.

Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller is Awesome. You have 3 levels of braking power to choose from with the Tekonsha brake controller. You can select a certain level, and even adjust the amount of braking power on the move, which is a great option. I had the Tekonsha controller in my Dodge pickup, then moved it to my Subaru Ascent, one year ago. I have been a professional driver for 49 years, with two national safe driving awards. Safety comes first, and Tekonsha helps me achieve that goal, every time I tow. The two pictures do not show the fully loaded cab of vehicle, or the 600 lbs of concrete bags. I was not pushing my allowed weight limit, although the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller makes towing pleasant.

by:

This electric brake actuator has worked flawlessly for the past year. It adjusts based on my device settings as I apply my car brakes. My car, a 2020 Subaru, came equipped with a tow package. The car's female plug made installation truly a plug and play event. My etrailer customer service rep was accurate in her explanation and recommendation of the Tekonsha. Thanks again etrailer team! You keep earning my business.

2019 Subaru Ascent

Needed a brake controller and wiring harness for our 2019 Subaru Ascent. Have always enjoyed easy ordering process and top quality products from etrailer; however, this time I wanted to make sure I got best fit for my intended use. Emailed Customer Svc and received next day a very nice email from Derek S, fully explaining his recommendation and suggesting the appropriate wiring harness for my Ascent. I placed the order, products arrived timely and installation took me maybe 1 hour, most of which was fabricating a bracket which allowed me to mount controller in a cavity under dash I “simply” created by popping out a fuse block cover. Tekonsha P-3 controller tucked neatly into cavity (see photo), plugged harness (3062-P) into existing Subaru plug and controller came on. Etrailer and it’s friendly, helpful staff ROCKS!!!

First understand that I have the mechanical ability of a gerbil. That being said. I had unit up and calibrated within 8 minuets of delivery by ups. It truly is plug and play. I am enclosing a picture of plug, harness attached to plug and unit sitting in little alcove to left of steering wheel that looks like it was made for it. It took 8
Minuets

Used this on my Subaru Ascent for a easy plug and play hookup of my redarc towing controller. It has performed perfectly. I could not be more satisfied with the results

I plugged the unit in the factory plug using

I
have never installed or used a brake controller before. I used the connector that was suggested plugged it into the car's connector followed the instructions and it worked with no issues the hardest part, in my Subaru Ascent, was finding a place to put it luckily it fit in a cubby to the left of the steering wheel.

2020 Subaru Ascent

Installed easily and directions were very clear. Disappointed that the "installation notes" for this should have more clearly stated that the following is required: "Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness - 331-TPH-017".
Since I did not have it I just cut the black ended adapter off and hard wired it to the Redarc cord according to the wire colors.

You can wire it into the Red Arc controller like you have described. If you do want the plug and play option you can look at part # 331-TPH-017.

by:

Easy to install with the plug and play wiring harness. It took me just a few minutes to connect and set up.
The instructions were easy to follow.
I've taken my R-Pod on a cross country trip with this brake controller as well as a couple of shorter trips. It works as advertised.
The only con is the quick release mounting bracket. I like that it is a quick release so that I can take it out and put it back in (when not in use, I keep it in the glove box in it's little nylon case with instructions), but it's easy to kick and knock out of alignment. It is supposed to stay aligned with the car, but I keep kicking the dern thing and having to reach down and straighten it out. It would be better if I just drilled another hole in the bracket, use a shim, and make the mounting bracket permanently straight.
Overall, it was worth the money and I'm totally happy with it's performance.

Made installation of the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 very easy.

This brake controller worked well in our 2020 Suburu Ascent. Modified the blank switch plug under the dash to the left of the steering wheel. This took a little time to ream out with a dremel type tool, but the controller know fit in and worked well (youtube videos can be found for this).

2022 Subaru Ascent

This adapter coupled with a Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness (Item #331-TPH-017) worked as advertised to connect my 2022 Subaru Ascent with the factory tow package to a Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller (Item #RED44FR).

by:
Subaru

This fit perfectly on a Subaru Ascent. It only took about 5 minutes to install. I fed the adapter up the steering column and used command removable velcro hanging strips to install the controller on the small shelf to the left of the steering wheel without any screws. The controller works very well.

by:

This harness is an easy way to connect the dash unit to the factory harness. it plugs right in to my 2019 Subaru Ascent and is long enough to allow several different placements for the controller. I mounted the controller to the fuse access door as to not damage any part of the dash and avoid all the airbag areas.

by:

Plug and play! Super easy install.

by:
2020 Subaru Ascent

Wiring adapter worked exactly as advertised. Added benefit - etrailer provided excellent instructions, pictures of connector location and links to installation videos.

by:

Simple to install on my Subaru Ascent. Took me less then 90 SEC from starting the project to having my brake controller up and running. Works perfectly.

Diana was fantastic to work with and quickly helped me find the right parts for my new Subaru Ascent before it even arrived! She walked me through all the options and provided information on the right cables to get for a brake controller. Thanks to her, I was able to get everything hooked up and working within 5 minutes. Great service, great prices, and excellent assistance with technical questions!

  • Is etrailer or EcoHitch Better for a 2021 Subaru Ascent
Hey Sergi, thanks for reaching out! Go with the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e55ZR. There are some subtle differences in design but really what the price difference amounts to is the EcoHitch Invisi Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7381 was really the first of it's kind on the market, but then other companies started coming out with their own designs like it and TorkLift/EcoHitch still thinks that their design is much more superior to everything else on the market...which it isn't. Yes, Tekonsha released the part # 3062-P which is a brake controller install harness that fits your 2019 Subaru Ascent and would work well. I attached a picture that shows where you'll find it on your vehicle too. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle...

The Curt Echo # C51180 does require a 30 amp fuse, so that will definitely fix that issue. This is used fairly often and this does happen, but I cannot say if this will be bad for the vehicle or not. However, if a Subaru dealer said not to do it and it is a leased vehicle, I would follow that direction.
