Question:
I need a brake controller and I have had someone recommend to me your RED44FR. They have this and say there is no better controller that they have used, I don't know anything about brake controllers and this will be the first I have used one. I have a 2022 Subaru Ascent. Will this work for me? Is it difficult to install? Do you think I can do this or need to hire a shop to install?

Yes, whoever it is that told you about the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller, # RED44FR has definitely made a great recommendation to you, absolutely this will work in your 2022 Subaru Ascent. The installation process depends if your Ascent is equipped with the factory tow package.
If your Ascent has the factory tow package you will be able to use the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers, # 3062-P. This plugs into the factory trailer brake controller port located underneath your dashboard, so that part is very simple. The more challenging, and even then minimally, is to mount the controller. But we have a great installation video produced and linked below to help with all this.
If your Ascent does NOT have the factory tow package you will need to install a 7-way connector using the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # 118290.
You will then need to hardwire the # RED44FR making the following connections:
Black wire to vehicle battery with 20 amp circuit breaker if trailer has 1-2 braking axles, or 30 amp circuit breaker if trailer has 3-4 braking axles
White wire to ground
Blue wire to blue wire of # 118290
Red wire to cold side of stop light switch that only has power when brakes are applied. You will need a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find this wire.
Pollak Circuit Breaker 20 Amp # PK54520 or 30 Amp # 38630.
If your vehicle has the factory tow package the installation is very easy and you can absolutely do it yourself, but if you do not have the factory tow package and are not comfortable with vehicle wiring you may want to have a local shop complete the installation for you. If you already have a local mechanic that you trust, that is great. Please let them know about our installation videos that are available in case that is of value to them.
We also have the "Locate installers near me" option available on the website, please follow the link located on the product page below the video links.
