Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to the included Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the Companion can be removed for complete bed access.

B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Trailer Hitch

B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

The included Turnoverball serves as a sturdy, custom base for installing the Companion in the bed of your truck, but it's also one of the most recognizable gooseneck hitches on the market.

Gooseneck Specs:

  • Gross towing weight: 30,000 lbs
  • Vertical load limit: 7,500 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"

B&W Companion Installed in Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

With the B&W Turnoverball underbed gooseneck trailer hitch you get the best of both worlds. When you go to tow a gooseneck trailer, the Turnoverball creates a sturdy, dependable connection with your trailer. And when you're done towing, you can stow the ball upside down in the hitch to get full bed access and a clean appearance. When you're ready to tow your fifth wheel trailer, just install the Companion in the ball hole in place of the gooseneck ball and lock the post in place using the built-in handle. You can remove the fifth wheel when you're done towing, leaving your truck bed open once again.

This kit is custom designed for your vehicle. The mounting brackets bolt to existing holes in your truck's frame. While some modification is required - you will need to cut a 4" diameter hole in your bed for the hitch ball and drill holes for the built-in safety chain loops - there is no need to weld onto or to drill into your frame.

Once you have the brackets and center section installed, set up the operating handle. This handle is designed to be accessed from the rear driver's-side wheel well. On the end of the handle is the heavy-duty steel pin that secures the mounting post of the Companion (or the base of the gooseneck hitch ball).

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Assembly of the B&W Companion

The Companion's pivot arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Only one half received. Bottom rails damaged in shipping, being returned. Was going to pick up a trailer with my old truck this weekend, and needed this hitch. So I am sure the metal is quality, but for me it is useless scrap with out the bottom part. So now sellers are waiting to sell a trailer to me that I cannot get for another month. So much for depending on pro shippers to do it right.

  • Comparing The B&W Underbed Gooseneck Hitch For Companion 5th Wheel On 2013 Ram 2500
For your 2013 Ram 2500, the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3500-5W is the same in both comparisons so the difference is in the gooseneck underbed rails. The Custom Underbed Installation Kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWGNRK1313-5W is a fit for DIESEL models only, and the # BWGNRK1308-5W is the fit for GAS models only on a 2013 Ram 2500. • Recommended Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for 2013 Ram 2500 Short Bed
Either the Curt # C16541 A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch w/ Slider with its 20K capacity or the 20K Capacity B&W BWRVK3270 Patriot Sliding Fifth wheel hitch would be a great choice. Both hitches are high quality, and would offer you a secure, relatively smooth ride. For the Curt hitch, use the # C16430-204 rail kit or for the B&W Patriot, use # BWRVK2605. My only issue with bed rail mounted hitches is the fact that the rails remain in the bed when you're not using the hitch. If you don't use the...

If your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 already has the B&W Underbed Kit # BWGNRK1308-5W installed, then the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W is definitely the best option for towing a fifth-wheel trailer. The Companions are considered by many to be the best available hitches on the market because of their 1 inch thick dual jaws that provide a great connection to the trailer and a fully articulating head that will ease hookup and limit chucking. I measured some Curt rails, the same as those used in installation kit # C16426-204 and they are 1-1/4 inches tall if you measure from the top of the bed corrugations. The bolts do go through the outer parts of the rails so the bolt head height would not be an issue. I have linked a video showing installation of this kit on a 2013 Ram. The B&W Turnoverball is a gooseneck hitch but also acts as the mounting point for the Companion. This will also mean less holes in the bed of the...

  • Below Bed 5th Wheel Installation Kit Needed For A 2000 Ford F-250
Hey Judah, For below bed you would need to go with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1108 and then use either the fixed base Companion # BWRVK3500 or slider base Companion # BWRVK3400-5W depending on whether you have a long bed or short bed. If your bed is less than 8' then you'll want to go with the slider base to gain some additional turning clearance when making tight turns. This setup would also allow you to tow gooseneck trailers but removing the hitch...

  • Best 5th Wheel Hitch Option for 2019 Ram 2500 Mega Cab With 6-1/2 Foot Short Bed
With clearance being the biggest issue for you, there is one option I highly recommend for a 5th wheel hitch that fits your 2019 Ram 2500 with a 6-1/2 foot bed, the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with Slider # DM8550034. The Hijacker gives you more clearance than any other sliding hitch because of its 14 inches of front-to-back travel; other hitches have between 10 inches and 12 inches of travel. That will give you the most possible clearance for your 2019 Ram, and you...

  • Recommendation for a 2014 Ram 2500 Short Bed To Navigate Tight Campground Turns
I can help you navigate those tight turns in your 2014 Ram 2500. Since the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5GX1216 that you referenced does not move the pivot point further back you really do not gain much clearance for tight turns with a short bed truck. Also, if you use an offset adapter like this you can not use an additional offset adapter like the B and W extender you referenced. This would cause too much leverage on the trailer. Instead I would highly...

  • Best 5th Wheel Hitch Setup For Full Bed Access On A 2011 Ford F350
Hello Jonathan, thanks for reaching out. The best way to keep full bed access on your 2011 F350 will be to go with a B&W Tunoverball/Companion hitch setup. For your truck you can use # BWGNRK1111-5W for the installation kit and the # BWRVK3400-5W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch. There are a few big advantages to going with this setup. First, the installation kit is actually a B&W gooseneck hitch. So, with the hitch removed from the bed, you will still have the full bed at your disposal with...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for Gooseneck Ball in 2005 Ram 2500 Short Bed
Hi Mike; I noticed you were looking at a B&W 5th wheel hitch. Is your gooseneck hitch the B&W Turnoverball? The hole for the ball would be square if it is. If so, you can use the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W. However, this is a heavy sucker so not exactly the most manageable for one person. The Andersen Aluminum Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection 2 Gooseneck # 3220 will also work (works with any brand gooseneck hitch). This hitch is incredibly light with the base at 35 lbs so that sounds more...

  • How to Measure 5th Wheel Hitch Height for a 2023 GMC Sierra 3500 W/ a Short Bed
Ok so in order to determine the correct height setting for your 5th wheel and your GMC Sierra 3500, you'd need to level your setup and measure from the ground to the bottom of the pin box and choose a height setting that gives you the most level ride (17" - 19" for the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W you're looking at). Keep in mind that we recommend having at least 5-6" of space between the bed rails and your truck/trailer to make sure you don't have any contact between the two. Since...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for Clean Bed Once Removed on a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 Short Bed
If you are wanting to keep the bed of your 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 clean then I highly recommend using the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W because it mounts in the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1059-5W. Instead of having bed rails in the bed of your truck you just have the gooseneck hitch ball receiver and safety chain loops as you can see in the attached photo. The Companion is made right here in the USA, has a 20,000 lb weight capacity (which is more than your pickup), 17" - 19" of height...

  • I Own A 2017 Ram 2500 with No Factory Installed Puck System Do You Sell An Aftermarket System?
The factory puck system that was available for your 2017 Ram 2500 is integrated into the frame and cannot be installed as an aftermarket part. There are some underbed mounted fifth wheel hitch install kits but as of right now none of them install a puck system. The only underbed kit available for your Ram is the B&W, part # BWGNRK1384-5W, that uses the B&W companion hitch, part # BWRVK3400-5W. (I have a picture attached that will show how this will look installed on your bed.) The Custom...

That you are looking at the B&W options for 5th wheel hitches is great; they are possibly the best manufacturer of hitches currently on the market. We can get you set up for proper hauling of a 5th wheel with your Rambox equipped 2500 series Ram however, the use of the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3400-5W that you have listed is not the way to go with a Sidewinder pinbox. • Troubleshooting 5th Wheel Chucking with Andersen Ultimate Gooseneck Hitch
The Andersen Ultimate is a nice option for being lightweight, but it is not any help with chucking as you described. It has absolutely no built in assistance for that function. You are pulling a really big trailer, so the chucking will be worse with that than a lightweight 5th wheel because there is simply more momentum so you will feel it more. There really isn't a way to help with the chucking you are experiencing with that particular hitch as air ride will definitely help some but...

  • How to Determine Clearance for Gooseneck Hitch on 2016 Dodge Ram 2500
You need to use the following calculation to find if you have enough clearance: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the gooseneck ball to the truck cab B = Offset used C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2. So your A is 35" and C is 48" which means right now Clearance = -13". You really want A to be 4" more than C so in this case you need a 17" offset. Even if you combine an offset ball with an offset adapter you aren't going to be able to get to 17" or even 13". The...

  • Will Air Lift Air Bags Work on a 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 w/ a B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch?
Hey Greg, they're not going to work together. The clamps that attach the Air Lift Air Springs like item # AL88341 hang over your frame right where the brackets for the B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch item # BWGNRK1020 sit. You'll want to go with the Firestone Ride-Rite Red Label Extreme Duty Air Helper Springs item # F2709 for your 2021 GMC Sierra 2500. These install beneath the frame where your bump stop mounts sit so there's no compatibility issues. They're slightly more expensive...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch for B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Rails in 2008 Ford F-350
The B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck # BWGNRK1108-5W also serves as the underbed rails for the B&W Companion and does not fit other fifth wheel hitches. Don't let the lack of options dissuade you though because this is the fifth wheel hitch I would recommend for you even if you did not already have the base rails because the Companion is considered by many to be the highest-quality fifth wheel hitch available and height should not be an issue because it can adjust from between 16-1/4" to 18-1/4"....

  • What Capacity 5th Wheel Hitch Is Needed To Tow A Keystone Montana High Country 5th Wheel Trailer
Hey Gary, The rule of thumb with towing is to only use about 80-85% of the total capacity to leave a 10-15% buffer for safety. Using this method a 20k rated fifth wheel hitch would be good for trailer's with a GVWR up to around 16,000 - 17,000lbs. I would check the white sticker that should be on the driver's side of the trailer at the front for the GVWR. Since you have a 6-1/2' bed you'll want to go with a sliding base hitch like the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider...

  • Will B&W Companion Fit 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Short Bed
Hi Eric; I'm not sure where you saw that but we have had other customers successfully install the # BWRVK3400-5W without any issues. If the design of the bed on your 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 would not allow the installation of the Companion we wouldn't list it as an option and B&W would have notes saying the Companion is not compatible. You can definitely use this 5th wheel hitch with your truck.

Hey Mitch! I can't tell from that picture if you'll have enough clearance or not with the fixed Companion # BWRVK3500. To determine your clearance you will need to measure and use the following formula: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab (you can use the center of your B&W Turnoverball) B = Length of pin box arm C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2 If you have less than 4" you need the Companion Slider # BWRVK3400-5W.

There are below the bed 5th wheel installation kits for the 2017 Ford F-250; just not any Reese kits. The reason for that is Reese makes the factory under bed install kit for Ford so they tend not to release an aftermarket kit right away (or at all in some cases) which gives Ford exclusivity to it. If you do not already have a Reese Elite Series hitch then you can go with one of the other under bed kits and a hitch for it. I would need to know the bed length of your truck and if it is...
