Is There Best Hitch Head Position for B and W Companion Hitch in 2010 Ram 2500
Question:
There are a lot of answers to this question here but of course mine is different. Way back in 1990s I installed a hitch and the rule back then was 4inch in front of the axel. Long Bed Truck And now I have the B and W Turnover ball and it sits in front of the axel so if I pulled a gooseneck the weight would be in front of the axel. I have added a Companion hitch now and its saying I need to use position 1 which buts the majority of the base behind the axel. I can adjust the arms to put the pin over the axel but the Base is mostly behind the axel which IS the footprint for the weight.. If this is how it has to be what problems could I run into if I put the hitch in Position 2 and the trailer pin right over the B and W ball location? Other than cab clearance 2010 Ram 2500 Longbed

The short answer to your question is that B and W designed the Turnoverball # BWGNRK1308-5W that fits your 2010 Ram 2500 so that if you were to use the Companion hitch part # BWRVK3500 in any of it's head positions you are going to be fine. The current recommendation for where to place the king pin of the trailer relative to the axle is either right above it or put it an inch or two in front.
Instead of the foot print of the hitch base being forward or behind the rear axle instead it should be the center of the hitch jaws (where king pin will be held) compared to the axle center of the truck. For a long bed truck we've found that regardless of which head position you pick you aren't going to have cab clearance issues. Especially if trailer has extended pin box and/or tapered nose.
