Secure Wraparound Jaw with Locking Bar

Single Dimensions

The single-piece, strong wraparound jaw completely surrounds your trailer's king pin for 360 degrees of contact. This wraparound jaw provides a more secure connection than standard 2-piece jaws that close in on the king pin from the sides. The increased jaw-to-king-pin contact on the Recon hitch offers tighter tolerances around the king pin, which minimizes both rattle and chucking, for a smooth, quiet ride.

A 3/4" thick solid steel locking bar spans the area in front of the jaw. This bar provides an added barrier of protection against accidental disconnection so you can have peace of mind that your trailer is secure. The locking bar is attached to the jaw and to the spring-loaded handle. The bar automatically locks when the jaw closes around your king pin.

Double-Pivot, Cushioned Hitch Head

Side PivotPin

The double pivoting, cushioned head improves your towing experience dramatically by helping to reduce jarring and unwanted noise. Built-in pins allow the hitch head to pivot back and forth and side to side. And hookup is easy because the hitch head will automatically pivot to the proper angle when it comes into contact with your pin box.

Polyurethane dampeners help to cushion the movement from the pivoting head and to reduce towing noise. These dampeners are built into the head assembly to cushion the head's side-to-side pivoting.

Easy Installation with Curt Double Lock Gooseneck Hitch

This hitch is designed to attach to the 2-5/16" ball that comes with the included underbed installation kit. The kit is actually Curt's Double Lock gooseneck hitch, so you can tow a gooseneck trailer with this setup as well. When you aren't towing your fifth-wheel trailer, simply remove the Recon hitch and you'll be good to tow. If you're done towing entirely and want your truck bed to be free and clear for hauling, just pop out the chrome ball, flip it upside down, drop it back into the ball hole of the hitch, and use the wheel-well-mounted handle to lock the ball in place. A rubber cover is included to go over the ball hole and keep out dirt and grime.

Curt Double Lock Gooseneck Trailer Operation

Gooseneck Specs:

  • Gross towing weight: 30,000 lbs
  • Tongue weight: 7,500 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"

Quick Assembly

Assembling the hitch is quick and easy because of its lightweight, 2-piece design. First, attach the base to the 2-5/16" ball. A coupler pin is installed underneath the ball and the coupler is tightened to keep the Recon secure. Then simply slide the head assembly into the opening in the base. There are 3 different height settings to choose from - just slide the head up or down to find your desired height.

Once you have chosen your desired height, use the included pin to secure the head to the base. Finally, tighten the bolt to eliminate any movement and rattle.

Video Transcript for Review of Demco Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters - Base - DM6201

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Replacement Base Assembly for the Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter. This has a 21,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this part will replace just the base assembly that's on the Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter, which is part number DM8550045. Now that adapter, we do sell separately on our website. Now this is just for the base assembly.

It does not include the hitch head. The hitch head bolts to this center post here. The hitch head, we do sell separately. It's part number DM6169. The center post right here that the hitch head attaches to, has three different height settings to fit your application.

And the hitch height is critical 'cause when you go to tow your fifth wheel, you do wanna make sure you're towing as level as possible. And hitch height is always measured from the top of the truck bed to the top of the hitch head. And now the hitch height settings on this center post, there's three holes in it. So it gives you a selection of three different hitch height settings. Either a 15-and-a-half inch, 17-and-a-quarter-inch or 18-inch hitch height setting.

You just pick the one that works best for your application. Now, this base also, when you do install this over the gooseneck ball, it does give you a three-inch offset for extra clearance of your fifth wheel. It is is a sturdy steel construction. Has a nice rust-resistant black powder coat finish on it. And it is a quick, simple installation.

Basically, this just installs over the gooseneck ball and it's held in place with the pin and clip. And also these two set screws right up front here. This part is made in the USA and again, the gross towing weight capacity on this base assembly is 21,000 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Replacement Base Assembly for the Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter..

  • Will Air Bags Work on a 4WD 1993 Ford F-250 w/ a Gooseneck Hitch?
Hey Patrick! Thanks for the pictures and all the information! I checked with Air Lift and their LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs item # AL57298 are only compatible with the Reese gooseneck hitch because of how the brackets install on the frame. They're vertical brackets instead of the horizontal ones the Curt Gooseneck Hitch item # C60723-5W has. Our website wasn't as clear on this as it should've been on in bed hitches. Every other air bag kit installs in the exact same place like...

  • Under Bed Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 1997 Ford F-250
Hey Michael, we have an underbed type solution for your 1997 Ford F-250 with the Demco Recon hitch part # DM8550045-5W and the underbed gooseneck rail kit part # C60723-5W. This doesn't use underbed pucks but it is an underbed setup since the hitch attaches to a gooseneck hitch post instead of a set of above bed rails.

  • Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer with a Truck That Has a Recessed Gooseneck Hitch
To tow a 5th wheel trailer with your truck that has a Hauler bed and a recessed gooseneck hitch installed, there are a few different options. Since the goosneck hitch is already installed the easiest way would be to adapt either the truck or trailer so you can hook up and tow. The first option is an adapter that replaces your pin box on your trailer. They are specifically designed to fit certain pin boxes, but this is the most secure permanent solution. • Demco Recon Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter that Can be Used with CM Flat Bed
Demco makes a special version of the Recon hitch for flat bed applications that have recessed balls actually! So what you'd want instead is the part # DM8550046. This has a shorter overall height to make up for the additional height of the flat bed truck and has the portion that attaches to the ball sit a bit lower. I attached a picture of this installed on a flat bed truck similar ot yours for you to check out as well.

  • Recommended Gooseneck to Fifth Wheel Connection for my CM ER Truck Bed
The base on the Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter for Recessed Ball part # DM8550046 is too wide to fit down into the trough you have on your Cm Truck Bed. It should make full contact at the base so it is not the best idea. Instead the B&W Companion Flatbed Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter part # BWRVK3050 is designed to fit into the 18" recessed area and will connect to the B&B Gooseneck that comes with your CM Truck Bed. • Adapting a Gooseneck Hitch to Tow a 5th Wheel Trailer with a 2011 Ford F-350
The hole for gooseneck balls are not all the same. The Companion hitches such as # BWRVK3050, which was designed for flat bed trucks, only fit B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitches. For a gooseneck ball that sticks up from the bed (and is not recessed in a cavity like on a flat bed truck) you can use the Demco Recon hitch # DM8550045. It clamps around a 2-5/16 inch gooseneck ball. I have included a link to a video review of this hitch for you. Another option is to adapt the trailer by...

  • What Prevents Demco Recon From Spinning at Base and Not in Hitch Head
Basically the pin weight of the trailer is what keeps the fifth wheel hitch from spinning on the Demco Recon # DM8550045 as it creates a lot of friction. It's much easier for the king pin to pivot in the hitch head and not the base.

  • Weight of Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550045
The Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550045 has a total weight of just about 150 pounds. Keep in mind too that the system is designed so that it can be easily removed from the bed in a couple of pieces (the head and base). This allows a single person to remove or install the hitch. I have attached a short video review on this hitch that you can check out as well.

  • What are the Base Dimensions of the Demco Recon Base 6201
Hey Michael, the Demco Recon base part # DM6201 measures 30-1/2 inches wide by 28 inches long. I'll have to email Demco to get the height dimensions but in the meantime does the fifth wheel trailer you are planning on purchasing have a fifth wheel hitch head already attached to it? That's pretty unique if so, do you happen to know what hitch head it is for sure as that would be how you'd need to match up to what you'd need.
