Difference Between an Idler Hub and a Hub/Drum

What is an idler hub and how does it differ from the hubs you describe? Do all trailer hubs have an idler? If not, what is the advantage?

The Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly you referenced, part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K is known as an idler hub. An idler is a hub that is no provisions for trailer brakes. It has no brake drum.

Part # 8-276-5 is an example of a hub/ drum that has a brake drum that can be used with a brake assembly like part # 23-47.

The # AKIHUB-440-2-1K would be an acceptable replacement for an idler hub with a 4-on-4 bolt pattern that uses # L44643 inner and outer wheel bearings.

The LM12749 outer bearing is a bit of an odd duck (0.8656" inner diameter) and unfortunately we don't have a hub assembly that uses it. The best solution I can offer is to simply replace your existing axle(s) with new ones that use a more standard spindle size. This will make replacement parts like hubs and bearings much easier to find. I have copied a link that will take you directly to our full selection.

It would be the best to replace all of the springs at the same time with the same size and capacity like you are thinking about doing. In the 25-1/4 inch size the part #e57SR would work great.
