Does Switching from Idler Hubs to Hub and Drum Assemblies Move the Tires Out or In

Question:

Im not sure I know the technical term but when I take off my current 5 screwy thingy and put on this screwy thingy with the brake assembly... will the wheel/tire be further out or in? I have limited clearance within the wheel well. Thanks

No worries on the name!

So your current 5 screwy thingy must be an idler hub and you are adding brakes so that is why you are switching to the drum screwy thingy # 84546UC3 which is a hub and drum assembly. You can call it a screwy thingy if you want. We hear all sorts of names for things but we usually know what people mean!

The position of the tire and wheel will remain approximately the same when switching from idler hubs to hub and drum assemblies. Really the only time it changes is when certain disc brake applications.

The most important things to consider when adding electric brakes to a trailer are selecting the right assemblies and making sure the axle has brake mounting flanges. Assembly # 84546UC3 uses inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649 and a seal with a 1.719 inner diameter. Compare this information to the bearings/seal you have now to make sure this assembly will fit.

Brake mounting flanges must be on the axles to mount the brakes. If they are not present then they will have to be added. This is a precision job that needs to be done by a qualified professional with experience welding on brake flanges. Otherwise the brakes could be in the wrong position leading to all sorts of issues.
