by:

My old spare tire mount let the tire drag on the ground while exiting a camp site, bending the mount. The new mount elevates the tire and the position is much better. The included 4 1/2" U-bolts were too large for my small trailer frame. Installation required purchasing 4" U-bolts sized for my trailer's frame which I bent slightly to fit the 4 1/2" holes on the mount. The result is excellent, very strong and secure with the increased ground clearance I wanted. This is a much better spare tire mount than the one I replaced.

by:

Great spare tire carrier and easy to install. Directions did say for 15" and 16" rims only, but when looking on the etrailer website it said it would still fit my 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern on my 14" rim (the reason why I bought it.) Sure enough, the wheel mounted right up to the carrier. I bought this because when I got my travel trailer it did not come with a spare tire or carrier and it better to be safe than sorry. I would definitely recommend or buy again.

Still in great shape, holding up well. Doing its job. Would definitely buy again.

This spare tire carrier is better than the boat-type carrier that came factory-original on my Aliner. It mounts the spare about one foot higher, which makes it safer and more protective in the event of a SLIGHT rear-end collision. I would've given it a 5-star rating except that the vertical piece through which the two shoulder bolts are inserted has the holes oriented perfectly vertically, which is not the way that 5-hole lug nuts are oriented on a tire rim. Plus, my rims aren't flat-faced, they're dished. In the final-mounted photo you can see I had to fabricate a piece of steel to accommodate the dished rim. This was a somewhat minor inconvenience, but inconvenient nonetheless as it wasn't "plug & play" out of the box.

Arrived with a damaged and retaped box. All the bolts and washers were missing. Had to call for a replacement. Annoying, because someone who should have not put this previously returned item back on the shelf for reshipping, did so. And whoever pulled the item should have checked it for all the parts given the condition of the product packaging.

The TR-2 folding tire carrier arrived on time and in good condition. It was well-packaged and all of the parts were there. The powder coating looks good. Other reviewers have mentioned that the open rectangular section bends down over time due to the weight of the tire bouncing up and down. I added a custom bracket to prevent this from happening. See pictures. The bracket was made from an 11-inch long piece of 2-inch by 2-inch by 1/16-inch (16 gauge) cold-rolled mild steel angle iron purchased at my local Ace Hardware. To make the bracket I used a tape measure, a pencil, a heavy vice, a hacksaw, a 2-pound hammer, a large crescent wrench an electric drill, and a can of black spray paint. To install the bracket I used 1/4" bolts, nuts, flat washers and lock washers. I have not yet mounted it on my trailer, but will update this review after I've done so and have used it for a while.

Here's some photos of the installed spare tire carrier which also serves as a fold down stainless steel table on my cooker trailer. Thanks for all your help.

Called to get help with my spare tire carrier. Very professional and helpful
Received it before promised. Works perfectly

by:

I bought this to replace the undercarriage tire carrier on my 2018 Cougar. I have my reasons for doing this. Nonetheless, moving the carrier to the rear bumper makes it a lot easier to access when needed, I decreased the tongue weight, and I can put a tire cover on it. I also did not want the tire/assembly full of snow/slush, sand and salt this winter in the northeast this December.
The new carrier fit perfectly, up tight against the bumper. There is some rotational movement of the upright support with the tire mounted (a previous review may have mentioned this). My 15in spare weighs 48.2 lbs and the carrier has a 60lb rating (hope Stromberg Carlson builds in some safety margin). I will be putting a safety cable/chain on it just in case.
4 stars for now, we'll see after my trip (cross country California to RI back).

The carrier is holding up just fine.

by:

This is a good product, however, I ran into two issues. #1 the top bolt for the tire mount was too far from the top corner of the of the bracket. I have a 4 bolt tire for my camper and the edge of the rim prevented me from mounting the tire to the carrier. ( I ended up bolting a different tire carrier to this one to make it work) #2 the bolt holes holding the carrier to the bumper have no play or adjustment. My bumper is welded along the entire back side to a metal beam. The beam has two cutouts where the old tire carrier was attached with U bolts. The cutouts did not line up precisely with the new carrier bolt holes, and the included U bolts were not long enough to span the depth of the 4.5" bumper plus beam. I was able to put in the bolts at a slight angle using the original cutouts, but this was not ideal.

Thank you for your review. The issues why this did not fit right for you are in the description. This fits most 5, 6 and 8 lug wheels and fits 4 inch square and 4 and a quarter inch square bumpers.

The products are just as good as when I got them! Appreciate the follow up.

by:

Overall decent product, easy install and straight forward assembly. I decided to weld mine straight to a rear bumper, then when it folds flat I have a place to set up a table on the back side of the carrier, then there's the tailgate for more table, pretty cool. I knocked off a couple stars because a.) There's only one bracer plate for the back of the rimed tire and the "lug" nuts are regular plain jane nuts which means neither is a special keyed one so anyone can steal your tire and b.) the hitch pin to drop the carrier down is particularly small so I made a longer one out of a half inch, six inch long bolt. Fix those two things and it's 5 star. Thank you.

by:

Works great..glad I bought it.
Traveled
14000. Miles year and no problems.

by:

No problem with wheel carrier; I need to find suitable location on trailer that will not interfere with "truck to goose neck trailer" rotation, make tire accessible when needed and not interfere with machine when loading flatbed trailer from side.

by:

Great product! I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee, the factory location for a spare tire is in the rear cargo area. I didn't want the spare tire inside, taking up cargo space. With very little modification, drilling a couple of holes, I relocated the spare to the rear bumper. I put it in between my passenger side taillight and the license plate. This is an excellent alternative to the swing away tire carriers that start around $350.

by:

Easy install but rattles a little. Maybe add a rubber bumper to stop movement

by:

Poor quality. Needs to be a bit more beefy, it has a lot of bounce/flex. Real flimsy for a 235/75-16 Broke weld on first one along with bending the tire hold down plate. The second one I used a ratchet strap to help hold the tire from moving. Wouldn’t recommend for larger tires, maybe a 15”.

by:

Exact match for my factory carrier. I added a second spare and this was a must. However, the nuts to the bolts that are used to mount the wheel were too small and did not fit the bolts. A quick trip to the local hardware store fixed it for a couple bucks, but slightly disappointing. Not etrailer’s fault at least.

by:

I just opened the pkg and it looks better than I expected. I was afraid it was going to be weak or "tinny". It looks very solid and I like the heavy black coating. It should not rust easily. My Chinook bumper is wider than the brackets, so I will have to drill holes in the bumper to accommodate the brackets. The reason I chose this product is that it drops down and will not impede the storage door behind it. Thanks. Vern
PS , excellent packaging.

by:

Excellent spare tire mount. Easy to install. The two bolts did not match my spare tire but there are other ways to make it fit - very versatile. Provides a very solid and easily adaptable means of mounting a spare tire.

by:

I like to carry two spare and this one matches the one I already have. Good quality, fits a four inch bumper just fine. Tire mounts on sturdy and easy. Swing away makes it nice to get it out of the way if you have shower or something back there. Definitely would buy again if I ever need another one.

by:

Put this on my camper trailer.. good clearance and makes it easy to unmount a tire.

by:

Fits perfectly on the rear bumper of our vintage travel trailer!

by:

The product is of top notch quality. Exactly as advertised. Most impressive is the delivery time. Two days from your place (Missouri). If I order from Mpls, it's 4 to 6 days and that's only 200 miles. It will keep the spare tire out of the travel trailer and be so handy on the rear bumper. You've got another steady customer here!

by:

Well Made Spare Tire HolderWhen I purchased my used travel trailer it did not come equipped with a spare tire carrier. This carrier is made of good quality and easy to install. The the shipping was super fast. I am a repeat customer of etrailer.

by:

On time delivery and the product was easy to install. I mounted my spare on the bumper and I'm good to go. The finished product with the spare mounted and cover on looks great.

Yes, the Bumper Mount Spare Tire Carrier, # TR-1, can support a 16 inch tire with an 8 lug wheel. The carrier, # TR-1, can handle the weight and bouncing but the key factor is having the correct bumper that is rated for the combined weight of the tire, wheel, and carrier. For...
