Ask the Experts about this Dutton-Lainson Spare Tire Carrier

  • Does the Wheel and Tire Turn On the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket # DL22144
I spoke to my contact at Dutton-Lainson and she stated that the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket, # DL22144, will allow the tire to spin some. It is not meant to dolly the trailer over long distances but a few turns of the wheel is more what it is made for.

  • What is the Max Capacity of the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket when Used as a Dolly
I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson about the capacities of the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket, # DL22144, and I have some information for you. Basically, my contact stated that there is no official rating, but he would say no more than 100 pounds. He then added if you can lift it by hand, be it 50 pounds or 90 pounds, the unit can take the weight.

  • Trailer Spare Tire Carrier for 15 Inch 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Rim
Unfortunately, the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Spare Tire Carrier # DL22144 will only fit up to 12 inch rims. An option for your 15 inch rims with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern is the MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier # MT70214.

  • Bolt Pattern Of Holes On Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket # DL22144
The bolt patterns that can be used on the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket, part # DL22144, is 4 on 4 and 5 on 4-1/2. These bolt patterns are used on the 8 inch, 10 inch, and 12 inch trailer wheels. The distance between holes on the 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern is 2-5/8 inches. If you have a 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern (3-1/4 inches between holes), that bolt pattern is usually a 16 inch or larger wheel.

  • Does the Wheel Need to Be Removed While Not in Use on the Dutton-Lainson Spare Tire Carrier
I checked with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and unfortunatly neither they nor we have a photo of the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket by Dutton-Lainson part # DL22144 installed and in use on a trailer at this time. With that being said the carrier/tire does not need to be removed while not in use. The tire can simply be left on the carrier until the time in which it is needed arises. The above carrier/dolly works with most 8"-12" wheels that have either a 4 or 5 bolt pattern....

  • How far out does the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket DL22144 hold the spare?
I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson, and he told me that from the mounting plate to the trailer frame, the length of the carrier is 3.86 inches. This carrier is made for standard 8, 9, or 12-inch spare tires with 4 or 5-hole rims.

  • Spare Tire Carrier for 4 x 4 Square Bumper
It sounds like you have a 4" x 4" square bumper, so the MaxxTow # MT70214 would not work for your bumper since the bumper's width is going to be too wide. Using longer bolts could potentially work, but we do not currently offer any bolts that are that length and graded for this application. For that reason, I recommend going with the Folding Bumper Mounted Tire Carrier # TR-2 which is designed to fit on 4" to 4-1/4" square bumpers and wheels with 5, 6 or 8 lug bolts. If you've got a...

  • Trailer Jack with Wheels to Make it Easier to Move Around a Trailer by Hand
Standard trailer jack wheels are either plastic or metal so there isn't a rubber tire available. But we do have the Trailer Valet # STC-V211 which is both a jack and a trailer mover rated up to 500 pounds tongue. You may also be able to use mount # DL22144 which holds a spare tire but can also use that spare tire to make it a dolly. The only problem would be turning since this is a fixed position carrier. Another option is to use a different jack that has dual wheels. That would make...

  • Recommended Spare Tire Carrier For Boat Trailer Made In USA
For your Spare Tire Carrier, I recommend the Trailer Spare Tire Carrier and Dolly Bracket by Dutton-Lainson # DL22144. Not only is this spare tire carrier made in the USA, it also has a really nice function for your boat trailer in that it can be used to help move your trailer in a straight line. This carrier will fit 4 on 4 bolt pattern or 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern with 8, 9, or 12 inch tires. Another option I recommend is the Offset Trailer Spare Tire Carrier by Dutton-Lainson...

  • How to Make a Trailer Easier to Move By Hand
I believe I have just what you are looking for, or at least close. Take a look at the spare tire carrier and dolly bracket # DL22144. You can mount an 8 to 12 inch tire on it with 4 or 5 bolt mounting pattern and it can be used as a dolly. But it doesn't pivot like a caster. Another option is to use an actual trailer dolly such as # MT70225. It is limited to 600 pounds tongue weight and as far as gross trailer weight it depends on how much you are able to push/pull around with the dolly....

  • Spare Trailer Tire Carrier for an 8 Inch Wheel
To determine if the CE Smith spare tire carrier # CE27310G will fit your 8 inch wheel you will need to measure the lug surface at the center of the wheel (the part of the wheel that will be in contact with the carrier). The carrier mounting surface is 3 inches wide by 6-1/8 inches tall. If you have the space in the middle of the wheel for this bracket then it will fit. Carrier # DL22144 does list 8 inches tries/wheels as a fit so you may want to consider it as an option.

  • Spare Tire Carrier for an 8 Inch Trailer Wheel
The 18.5 x 8.5-8 tire that you have should be 18.5 inches tall, 8-1/2 inches wide, and on an 8 inch wheel. The 15 inch mentioned for the Fulton spare tire carrier # FSTC1000301 is in reference to the wheel size. To fit the Fulton spare tire carrier the wheel would have to be at least a 10 inch so your 8 inch will not fit. Carrier # DL22144 does list 8 inches tries/wheels as a fit so you may want to consider it as an option.
