Question:
I have a class two hitch on my 2014 tiguan. It is the curt hitch that is easy to install, cut out the facia on the bumper and four bolts attach it. I recently notice a recommendation that a stabilizing strap 18050 should be used. My question is will the stabilizing straps hook fit in the fairly narrow slot on the top of my hatchback lid. Also do I even need to use a strap. Thank you.

The Curt Class II trailer hitch receiver offered for your 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan, part # C12097, does require when using non-trailer loads such as a bike or cargo carrier that you use their stabilizing strap # 18050. This strap is intended to help support the downward force on the hitch (tongue weight) with all such non-wheeled loads and also to help reduce some of the inevitable random motion of the accessory in use. This is particularly important with a large platform bike carrier.
Curt requires use of the strap on many of their hitches (including even some Class III types such as # C13133) in order for you to maintain your limited lifetime warranty coverage. Other hitch makers may not require you to use a strap but certainly it will only help to provide strain relief and a measure of extra stability even in those applications. Its never a bad idea.
You should have no trouble using the strap's included hook; it can be affixed to the hatch seam or to one of the roof side rails. Please refer to the linked video.
