Question:

If towing a trailer and putting a bike rack in the upper receiver, is the 400lb tongue weight for both items total or 400 individually?

Hi John,

That's a great question! The total tongue weight limit of the Roadmaster Dual Receiver Hitch Adapter part # RM48BQ is 400lbs. So, the collective tongue weight of both the bike rack and the trailer cannot exceed 400lbs. A better option would be to use a highly rated adjustable ball mount that has multiple hitch receivers like the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w/Stacked Receivers part # 325-GH-514. The Gen-Y adjustable ball mount part # 325-GH-514 has a 7 1/2" drop or rise and has four different hitch receivers built into it so you can determine what receiver positions will fit your trailer and bike rack the best. More importantly, it's rated for 2,000lbs of tongue weight, which can handle more weight than the Roadmaster hitch adapter. Even though it's rated for a high tongue weight, you are limited to whatever the tongue weight of the hitch is. So, if the hitch's max tongue weight is 500lbs you cannot exceed that amount even when using a higher rated ball mount.

What is the total tongue weight for your trailer and bike rack?
