Is There a Way to Bypass Bulb Out Sensor Issue with Audi Q7 When Towing

Updated 09/28/2026 | Published 09/18/2026

Question:

I have been battling the trailer light out error messages with two separate Audi Q7s for many years 2014 and 2022. I’ve replaced the LED tail lights with incandescent tail lights and that has not solved the issue. I have also run a common ground to all of the lights on the tail light circuit tail lights and side marker lights and can confirm there is very little resistance for the ground, so not a ground issue. Neither have fixed the problem. Sometimes they work for an hour or two and sometimes they dont work at all and I get the error right away. I’m wondering if having the LED side marker lights on the same circuit may be affecting the load. Should I try installing one of these resisters at the “front” of the circuit before it branches out to the six side markers and two tail lights? Indicators and brake lights have always worked fine. I have also tried every kind of 7 pin trailer light out bypass adapter with no results. Thank you, Jason

Hey Jason, a resistor could work but it would need to be of the correct value which I wouldn't know what that would be. If you wanted to bypass all of this installing a universal trailer wiring harness like the # C59236 will for sure solve the problem. It's not a simple solution though as it requires splicing into the vehicle taillights but once installed you wouldn't have to worry about anything like this again. Do you have a 7-way on your trailer? If so, you'd need the part # 37185 to then convert to a 7-way.

Hello Jameson, I have a 7-way and I’m wondering how the brake controller gets incorporated. Thank you, Jason

@JasonC What vehicle do you have? There might be factory brake controller wiring on the vehicle already which would make the install a bit easier or you might need to hardwire.
