Why Would 7-Way Adapter 20142 Only Work for a Few Hours

Updated 12/03/2025 | Published 11/29/2025

Question:

I have been using the LED bypass adapter for over a year now on my 2022 Audi Q7. The adapter always works initially and for a number of hours while towing, however, at some point I get the trailer lights error and the regular night lights stop working. Brake lights and blinkers still work, but no running lights. I have tried disconnecting everything and re-attaching after turning off the car and waiting, but the lights don’t seem to work until the car’s computer eventually clears the error code, which usually takes hours or even over night to clear. Has this been happening on other cars and have you heard of a fix? I have tried a second unit and that did not help. Thank you, Jason

Hey Jason, sorry to hear that. What is most likely happening is that the diode in the adapter is getting hot and it no longer shows the correct amount of resistance. Do you currently have two of these adapters? If so, you could prove this by using one till the error pops up and then swapping to the other one to see if that helps. That would at least give us more info to go off of to see if there's a solution. We've not seen this before though.

Hello Jameson and thanks for your reply. I do still have both adapters, so I can try to switch them when the error occurs next time. Thanks again and I’ll let you know when I get a chance to tow again. May not be until early spring until I tow for a distance.

@JasonC Yeah let me know if switching them out makes a difference. It's probably not ideal but for time being you could swap between the two. Also if this is the case if we can figure out the specs on the diode thats in the adapter we could see about finding a better one that performs better once warmed up maybe.
