Question:

I just purchased a pre-owned bunkhouse tent trailer that is pulled behind motorcycles/small cars. It currently has 5.7-8 sized tires on 4x4 bolt pattern. 18.3 diameter. There is currently 4 clearance from top of tire to bottom inside of fender. Tons of room fore and aft of tire to fender. I am considering switching out to the TaskMaster 4.80R12 that has 20.63 diameter. Looking for a radial with M speed rating. Will there be enough clearance without raising the fender or maybe just go ahead and modify fender ht?

Hey David. You're definitely going to need to modify your fenders when you upgrade to the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire item # TA49QR. If not you're going to hit them going over bumps and transitions when your suspension flexes.

You're going to want at least 3" of clearance between the top of your tire and the underside of your fender. Right now you've got 4" of clearance but when you upgrade to the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire item # TA49QR you're only going to have 1.6" which is not enough.

The Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire item # TA49QR does have a speed rating of M, which tops out at 81 mph. The white wheel has a 4 on 4 lug nut pattern and each wheel radial tire combo has a 990 lbs capacity.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I was calculating about 2” clearance but wanted confirmation. No problem raising the fender. It’s a pretty common mod on this style trailer. I’ll pull the micro camper (about 500lbs loaded) behind my 2000 Toyota Avalon so no issues there. With retirement just around the corner I wanted to get back to hopping between the KOAs on random road trips to see more of the USA. Question- can I run the tires on less than MAX recommended cold tire pressure? Is there minimum cold tire pressure that is still safe to run these tires on? Asking for a friend. ;-)

@DavidS You're welcome! Glad it'll be easy to raise your fenders. That stops a lot of people from doing exactly what you are. That sounds like a great way to spend your retirement! I wouldn't recommend running the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire item # TA49QR with lower than the 90 psi the manufacturer recommends. This isn't one of those tires that has a range. You'll wear them out quicker running them lower.
