Why Do My 30-Amp RV Plugs Keep Melting?

Question:

Every replacement plug end like this i’ve seen, if they even have the specs, say max rated watts 3750. My 2005 model a/c unit takes 4,000 running, even more at start~up. Will this plug end handle that or melt like the last three I have had?

Hey Aaron,

I reached out to the manufacturer on this and the Hughes Autoformers Replacement Hardwire RV Plug # HU93FR would likely run into the same issue if your RV is actually drawing 4,000 watts through the plug.

To put that into perspective, 4,000 watts at 115 volts works out to just under 35 amps of current. That's well above the capacity of a standard 30-amp RV plug and would explain why the plugs are overheating.

I don't think replacing the plug is going to fix your issue. A continuous 4,000-watt draw isn't typical for an RV air conditioner by itself. Even at startup, most RV A/C units don't pull anywhere near that much for more than a brief moment. Because of that, I want to make sure we're looking at the right number before pointing to a specific component as the culprit.

How are you getting the 4,000-watt figure? Is it from a power meter, an energy monitor like # A10-120VM, or is it listed on the air conditioner's data tag? Also, is that measurement for just the A/C, or the entire RV while the A/C is running?

That information will help determine whether there's an issue with the air conditioner itself, another component in the RV, or simply a poor connection that's causing the plugs to overheat.
