Do I Need Ring Terminals for a Progressive Dynamics PD9360 Converter Charger?

Question:
I purchased from you a battery charger for my camper. The unit is a Power Dynamics Model PD9360. I wish to confirm with you the type of cable connector to use on the 4 AWG wire that I expect to use. It appears to me that it would use a bare wire that is held in place with a set screw on the charger. I am simply trying to confirm that connection point for the black and red 4 AWG cables. Im used to seeing some type of ring as the cable ends. Thanks so much, Gary

Hi Gary, that's a great question, and you're exactly right to double check before wiring everything up. For the Progressive Dynamics PD9360V part # PD79RR, you do not use ring terminals or any other type of connector on the charger end. The stripped end of the 4 AWG wire inserts directly into the terminal block, and the built in set screw clamps down on the bare copper to hold it securely in place.
I recommend stripping about 5/8 inch of insulation from each wire and making sure all of the copper strands are inside the terminal before tightening the set screw. You don't want any stray strands sticking out, since that can lead to a poor connection. Ring terminals will still be used on the battery end of the cables, but at the charger itself, the bare wire is exactly how Progressive Dynamics designed it to be installed.
Out of curiosity, about how far is the PD9360 mounted from your battery bank?

I installed the same unit last year and you do not need ring terminals. I replaced the older style Progressive Dynamics that was for just lead acid batteries and it was literally disconnect the old one and hook up the new one exactly the same. Very simple and the unit has been great with the new Lithium Battery.

The charger will be about 30 ft away from the battery. Because of the distance, I am replacing the 6 AWG wire with 4 AWG wire.
