Question:

It looks like due to the high heat in the desert. The plastic on the hinge just cracked and split it looks as though it is riveted on, so I’m curious how you would replace the new hinge with the old hinge that is apparently riveted in place maybe I’m not looking closely enough. Here are the pictures.

Happy to help Doug, thanks for reaching out!

If you have a Thule Force XT XL or XXL cargo box, you won't need to drill out any rivets to install the replacement hinge # TH93VA. The hinge simply snaps onto the existing ball studs on the lid and the box.

To replace it, support the lid, then carefully pop the old hinge off the ball studs using a flat screwdriver if needed. Line up the new hinge with the ball studs and press it into place until it snaps on. If it's a little tight, a small amount of silicone lubricant or a few gentle taps with a rubber mallet can help.

Before you order, can you let me know the model of your cargo box? I'll can make sure # TH93VA is the correct replacement.

Also, how does the other hinge look?

The hinge is just pulled off and pressed on to replace it. I used a block of wood to press it on so as not to damage the plastic. Taking off is less of concern as the hinge will be thrown away but be sure not to damage the carrier.

I was able to pop off the old hinge with some effort. It’s like a ball socket. I used some kind of prying tool. The new one popped right on the ‘ball’ also with some effort. I also used a piece of wood so as not to damage the new hinge. It’s been great since.
