Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for a 2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring Edition

Updated 07/16/2014 | Published 07/15/2014

Question:

Hi, Im reading about trailer hitches for Miatas. I have a 2011 hard-top Miata, which desperately needs a bike rack. I have a Thule 2-bike rack, but no hitch. I saw on a prior answer that you could put in a Curt hitch if you dont have the appearance package on the Miata. What is that? Mine is a grand touring edition. Last question - if the Curt would work and I order it from yall, any ideas on where to take it for an install? I have virtually no mechanical skills.

The appearance package in question includes some additional parts on the exterior that would prevent the Curt trailer hitch # C11028 from being installed. From what I could find, the grand touring edition doesn't have this. But to be sure you may want to inquire with a Mazda dealer.

You could also take a look at the picture I have included and if the back of your Miata looks the same then it is likely that the hitch will fit just fine.

For installation a trusted mechanic or any place that sells and installs trailer hitches could perform the installation. Even an RV dealer with a service center is likely to be able to perform the installation.

Please note that Curt requires the use of stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch with any non-trailer load, such as a bike rack. Also, the hitch has a 1-1/4 inch receiver. The shank on your Thule bike rack will need to have a 1-1/2 inch wide shank to fit the hitch.
